    Day 292: Westwards to Cologne

    December 3, 2017 in Germany

Another long day of travelling today. Kassel isn't an easy place to get into or out of! Thankfully it was actually a bit easier as we just ditched Schnitzel's carry bag and let him walk on his leash - sometimes he's just happier doing that.

Snow had fallen overnight and was still lightly falling in the morning, so there was quite a white carpet outside when we woke up! Headed to the station where most of the trains were running late, except for ours which started from here so was thankfully on time.

We were on this train for about 90 minutes before changing in the city of Essen to another train for another 2 hours. Both trains quite full again; seems like lots of people use the local trains for their regular Sunday days out! Arrived in Cologne around 3pm, where the famous and immense Cathedral is right there adjacent to the station. It's a World Heritage site, but we'll come back and visit it another day - we're here for almost the whole week.

About 15 minutes walk to our apartment just south of the old town, hosted by a young woman. She's very nice, though a bit overly chatty - we both kind of feel a little like you get stuck talking for longer than you want when a conversation starts. Spent some time settling in, then wandered back into the old town for dinner.

There was one restaurant we were keen to try but they were completely full, so we headed for another one nearby. Had an enormous pork knuckle for dinner which I couldn't finish, with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes on the side of course. Wandered through the Christmas markets before heading home - it's nice but very crowded. Lots of tourists around here as well, Brits and Dutch mostly from what I could hear!

    Konzert in Köln Kalk

    April 21 in Germany

🐼Read more

    We're back!

    April 6, 2015 in Germany

Although hours delayed due to the heavy storms in Europe, our flight back was rather pleasant and calm. touching down in Frankfurt on a cold but beautiful early spring day, it took us only 2 hours with ice and metro until we could finally open the door of our apartment in cologne, from where we had left 107 days ago. it sure felt strange to take off our backpacks for the last time...luckily we have about 6 days left to pretend that the real life hasn't returned yet!
hoping that the battery of the car is still running ( it does, what a relief), tons of letters to work through, and a massive jetlag to be fought are the challenges...and not to forget, working your way trough thousands of photos, that will always remind us of a dream come true....

    Wrap-up
Starting at the end of the world in Fire Land, following the Andean range almost 7 thousand kilometers always direction north across glaciers in Argentina , sunburnt valleys in Chile, bitter-cold high plateaus in Bolivia up to 6000 meter high volcanoes in p, passing through the wet mountain landscape in Ecuador and the evergreen mountain ranges of Colombia. walking through enchanted lush rainforests on the most southern coast of the continent, bone-dry deserts in the central coast of Peru and the empty dream beaches of the Galapagos islands. the fascination of elegant Buenos Aires, the dual face if Chile in Valparaiso and santiago, the chaos of La Paz, the charm, elegance and beauty of Arequipa and Lima, the colonial beauty of Cuenca, Quito and Popayan.
Ximena, David, Pablo's parents, Natalia, Diego, Roxy and her family, Pamela, Caro and Daniel and all our friends and Family who shared part of our trip with us.
We thank you all and life for letting us get a grip on our time to enjoy being alive!

    Cologne (Köln)

    August 10, 2017 in Germany

We drove for about 2 hours to Motel One Cologne -Waidmarkt (yes, we seem to be on a Motel One tour! Not what we would normally choose, but at this point of the trip, they seem well priced, well located and predictable and that's a working formula with so many quick changes of location). We spent the afternoon checking out the town, before driving to near Bonn to catch up with Thomas (a friend we made on Tioman Island, earlier on this holiday), who provided a great meal and wonderful hospitality.Read more

    Am abend vor der Abreise

    August 1, 2017 in Germany

Mal sehen, was die Reise bringt. Ich werde versuchen, an meiner mentalen Einstellung zu arbeiten.
Dazu gehört: immer nur an den nächsten Schritt denken, dann kann ich keine Panik vor dem Unbekannten, ungeplanten kriegen.Read more
