    • Rule #11 (Mykonos & Delos)

      14. kesäkuuta 2022, Kreikka ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

      * there is no rule against repeating a rule, in this case, rule #10 ~
13 day vacation with 10 days at sea…also makes it easier to forget what day it is

Visited Delos today - not really my thing (hope I’m not sounding ungrateful)… Archeological site…
ALSO - a tour guide definitely makes or breaks the excursion…

ALSO ALSO - don’t pet the kitties - someone was bit by one of them and was taken to the local hospital 😬

ALSO ALSO ALSO - The excursion was 5 hours and during the last 1.5 hours I was able to explore the town (AKA shop) and that was the best part of the day 😂

Never Say Never - I never thought in my wildest dreams, that I would see the whitewashed houses with contrasting blue rooftops that line the hillsides in Greece (let alone did I ever think I would take a trip half way around the world by myself)Lue lisää

      Travel Day: Madrid to Mykonos

      18. toukokuuta, Kreikka ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

We made it to Mykonos! It was a rough start. We were all running off of 3-4 hrs of sleep. We started our day with coffee and food. cole and I tried subway, but there was really no difference, except way cheaper. We walked around the city for a bit and did some shopping. We then went to the most recommended place in Madrid, Takos. It opened at 1. We got there at 12:30 and there was already a pretty decent line. It was so good, but it almost came at a price. Our flight was supposed to takeoff at four and we did not plan accordingly. The 2 euro tacos almost became we more expensive, as waiting for them made us leave for the Metro around 1:30 and the ride to the airport was around 45 minutes. I have zero pictures from this part, as we had much bigger things to worry about. The train was so packed that we all had to scramble onto different parts of the it. Freeman and Declan do not have international phone plans, so they had no connection. Since we were separated, they did not know where to get off. Long story short, they didn’t get off when they were supposed to, so we had a fiasco getting reconnected with them. So, the train trip turned into over a well over hour and we all thought we were missing our flight. Luckily, bag checks were super short and we made it to our plane 10 minutes before boarding. Talk about an adrenaline rush! Our flight was smooth! We got off on the tarmac, which was a first. We arrived in Mykonos around 10 and our Airbnb host had a driver waiting for us. We went to a restaurant that was a 3 minute walk from our airbnb and had yummy Greek food. We finished the night with Greek beer and a cigar that Declan brought. A hectic day finished with a chill night. So glad we made it!Lue lisää

      Full Day 1 in Mykonos

      19. toukokuuta, Kreikka ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We caught up on sleep today! We woke up at about noon and found some coffees and food at a local bakery. We then spent the next 6 hours on the beach that was just a two minute walk from our Airbnb. The views from this place are breathtaking and the water is crystal clear. Cole, Declan, and I swam out as far as we could and we could still clearly see the bottom at least 30 feet down. It was so nice to just be lazy on the beach. We headed to the historic downtown around 9 and grabbed some food from an Italian restaurant. We then headed to some bars and met up with our Creighton friends at around midnight. We found an awesome club that we all stayed at until around 3:30. We all decided to walk back, which was a 45 minute stroll along the coast. We went to bed around 5. It was so nice to no have a checkout time this morning! Another great day!Lue lisää

      Santorini to Mykonos

      25. heinäkuuta 2023, Kreikka ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Our ferry today is the reverse of how we got here except we go back to Mykonos not Athens.

As always Erin has booked a cafe right by the departure area to protect us from the heatwave. We were told today that Greece has experienced its hottest summer heatwave on record, and we are in the midst of it.

It will be about three hours on the ferry, but it is very comfortable, air conditioning and a good place to read a book.

Mykonos is another popular island in the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea. Known for its summer party atmosphere and beaches such as Paradise and Super Paradise that have bars that blare thumping music.

At first glance Mykonos looks barren with no vegetation only towns. There are five cruise ships in the port, so we head to our hotel and don’t plan to go near town until all the cruise people go back and leave at dusk.

Our hotel is on the fringe of the CBD which is completely free of cars. Only scooters and pedestrians are allowed downtown.

Our boutique hotel was once a bishop's residence and has been in the family for four generations. We loved it. Rooms are small but the environment is so friendly and welcoming. The pool was a welcome relief from the heat for a while.

At 6pm we all met and walked into the town. What a culture shock. The shopping and restaurants are everywhere but if you look a bit deeper you see Mykonos has a proud history.

Erin explains the streets are all designed in a paving design that once coped with open sewerage. They also painted them with limestone to disinfect. The corners of the houses and balconies are rounded because it is so windy here, it limits the noise of the wind. The houses have a concrete bench out the front which most think is for cushions and for sitting on, but they were originally for getting on and off your donkey.
We walked to the Iconic 16th-century windmills, which sit on a hill above Mykonos town. They crushed grain using the high winds. Across from them is Little Venice where the houses are built up to the water. We walked along the front of restaurants where you can get wet at times.

The port is stunning, we only got a glimpse of the sunset because the cruise ships block the view.

Our restaurant was expensive, but the food was good and with the best view of the harbour. Walking back was an eye opener. The whole town is buzzing, and it is only 10 pm.

      A day trip to Mykonos

      6. kesäkuuta, Kreikka ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We took a short ferry ride to Mykonos. It is an island with a quaint old port town, traditional white Greek style buildings with blue shutters, and everywhere you look there are beautiful views of blue blue water.
George was a great guide and treated us to some delicious treats (gyros and Greek baked goods from the best bakery). Unfortunately, it was overcast and windy on the day we visited, which meant it was not as pretty but it did mean it was cooler than it normally is. There were several cruise ships in port so the port area was pretty full of people. We still found small “streets” to explore that were empty, quiet, and picturesque.
While I’m glad we visited, I’m very glad we made it a day trip vs spending more time there (the cruise crowds and party atmosphere is not our jam).

A gentle day watching the marathon runners cross the line outside our apartment.. golf claps from the balcony aplenty. A bit of shopping, a bit of dining and a bit of reading, watched the footy, but bed by 1030 again. Have fun party people - loving the double glazed windows!Lue lisää

      Lunch @ Katerina’s

      23. lokakuuta 2023, Kreikka ⋅ 🌧 66 °F

On a back street, we found Katerina’s … a gem of a restaurant inside one of the Little Venice houses. The establishment is named for Katerina Xidaki, a local woman who at age 18 became the first professional female captain of a motor vessel.

There were no tables available on the tiny balcony, which was in the sun anyway. So we gave up the scenery to sit at the only table available in the A/C-cooled dining room.

The menu offered a selection of Mediterranean dishes, with seafood featuring prominently. We opted for a bunch of mezes (appetizers). The portions turned out to be quite large … saganaki; feta cheese wrapped in phyllo, deep fried, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with black and white sesame seeds; calamari; and tempura-style zucchini slices with tzatziki sauce. Mui ordered ouzo; I opted for an Alpha, the local beer on the menu. Everything was delicious and plentiful, making us happy that Mui had not opted to also order the mussels. Dessert — a mix of baklava and kadayıf — was compliments of the establishment … and a nice wrap to a very nice meal.

We continued our meandering stroll through the streets, making our way back to the harbor. We came out not far from the water taxi drop-off point. Having purchased R/T tickets this morning, we made our way onto the next taxi to depart. It was right around 3:00p … just as planned.

      Mykonos

      14. syyskuuta 2022, Kreikka ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Delos

      9. lokakuuta 2019, Kreikka ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After a quick trip to the archaeological museum to see an amazing huge urn depicting the Trojan War, we hopped on a ferry for the half hour ride to the very tiny island of Delos. It is now uninhabited, but was settled about 5,000 years ago. It is the birthplace of Apollo, so that makes it pretty sacred. For centuries it was a prosperous commercial port. The whole place was destroyed by pirates in about 60BC and has been uninhabited since then. Excavations are ongoing. We spent hours walking around, climbing up and down, enjoying great views over the Aegean, and in a nice change from Mykonos, there were no crowds!

Tomorrow we get an early plane to Athens, and head northwest in a rental car. Monasteries, Delphi, and some mountains are our desination.

But now time for one more stroll around the harbor as night falls.
