Santorini Views from Fira and Oia

      July 17, 2022 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 79 °F

We met our guide at the cable car exit and visited the most photographed blue dome church and the Three Bells of Fira as our first stop. Because we had 3 other cruise boats also docked, both Fira and Oia were crazy busy with people everywhere.

Thankfully our guide who has lived on the island for 23 years had plenty of experience getting us to our stops, knowledgeable about how the islands were formed by a volcanic eruption, and provided great recommendations. Once in Oia, we walked to another famous blue dome church and walked around the northern city checking out the shops, patisseries, and restaurants. The streets were crowded with other tourists, some lugging their bags to their hotels located just off the cobblestone streets. We would stop every so often to catch more amazing views of the caldera.

From our guide, we learned that Santorini was originally one island, but is now five separate islands due to a volcano eruption in 1615 BC which was the biggest eruption in history. This went on for 3 days and it is believed that an earthquake caused eruption. I wish we had more time to go to the museum to learn more about this, but we were limited due to our time ashore.

We spent some time walking in the streets of Oia and Sydney found an amazing spot for baklava and I was able to sample a beer from the Santorini Brewing Company.

      Santorini

      October 5, 2022 in Greece ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

So... Does it live up to the hype?
Yes! It is beautiful, but busy. A population of 22,000 takes in up to 17 cruise ships per day (25,000 people) - a friend for everybody!

The solution: if you are going to spend the time and money to come here, pay the little extra to avoid the barbarians. From the right villa there is no need to fight for a good photo spot or restaurant.. Just enjoy the cool breeze, the warm sun, a good book and a glass of whatever takes your fancy.Read more

      Another massive hike!

      July 31, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

      Miles: 12.3 Steps: 26933
      Flights stairs: 55

We decided to have a lazy morning / early afternoon today and hang out at our pool during the hottest part of the day. It’s a beautiful pool here and loved every minute - so refreshing, perfect temperature.

We took off at 4:00 for another massive hike. We really haven’t attempted another big one since our Matterhorn 16 mile debacle. (Which still was spectacular regardless!). As I had said, Santorini is built on the ridge of a volcano - and it overlooks this massive water filled caldera. So we went on a hike that walks the entire rim!

Our hostel is in the city of Fira and the end point is Oia. The Fira-Oia hike. The hike itself was about 7 miles, but of course we had to walk to the starting point, walk once we got to Oia, and walk back home from the bus stop … so it was a LONG ways again. But what an amazing view almost every second of the hike!!

We stayed for sunset, found a little place to eat, and took the city bus back to Fira. And now we’re dead tired. But it was an amazing day!!!

      Tag 2: Oia

      April 2 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

      Santorini

      August 1, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We managed to do even less today than yesterday which was certainly hard to beat!

We didn’t even leave the hotel today, chilled by the pool all day, caught up on some emails/admin stuff and read a lot! We had a simple dinner of greek salad, gyros, ouzo and pina colada by the pool in the evening.

We watched the sunset from our balcony and played some cards before having an early night as we would be getting up early tomorrow to watch the sunrise.

      Santorini

      August 2, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Today we got up a bit earlier to see the sunrise over Santorini which was beautiful! We then made our way back to the hotel, where Gab did a workout by the pool and Daniel went for a run through Santorini.

After breakfast, we chilled by the pool for most of the day by reading and swimming before heading out to Oia to watch another beautiful sunset! There are so many people around to watch sunset with bottles of drinks but we managed to find a nice spot.

We then walked back, finding a really cool restaurant to have gyros and soulvaki and wine for dinner (only 16 euros for both of us including half a litre of wine) before returning to the hotel.

    • Day 140

      Santorini

      August 4, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

After a busy day yesterday, we chilled by the pool for most of the day and finished off some books we had each been reading (we are thankful for our kindles as we have read a lot of books which would not have fitted in our suitcases!) We did a couple of video calls home to friends as well as Daniel's family in the morning before relaxing in the sun.

In the evening, we went back to the famous sunset point but descended down into Oia’s Ammoudi Bay where we would be having dinner by the water. The stairs down were quite steep, Daniel even had to take off his shirt to limit how sweaty he was getting!

We made it to our restaurant where we had a lovely view over the bay, and enjoyed seafood linguini and seafood risotto which was really delicious! :) We then climbed back up the stairs and took our time, knowing that aircon was awaiting us at our hotel! We had one last stroll along the Oia footpath and made it back to the hotel.
