      6.Servant Leader

      May 12, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Our team focuses on servant leadership so needless to say we weren’t limited to options when discussing an act of it. One person that stood out to me was Coye. From what I got he was a quieter member of our 3rd year team. This trip he showed his personality and how he grew comfortable to be around our team. While Mads was planning the trip she had the other 3rd year team members give input or suggestions on what things our team might like to do. Coye came prepared and was helpful when suggesting things. I think he researched almost as much as Mads so we could all make the most of our trip. He was also one of the people that really wanted to go explore London on our layover. However he was super flexible and understanding when Mads told him we’d have to wait when we get there to see if that was a possibility and even looked up things for us to do while at Heathrow. During this trip I think Coye branched out more than most of us and hung out with everyone. Something I definitely admire because it was something I really struggled with this trip. He attempted to complete bingo which was a challenge some of us didn’t take as seriously. He would just keep saying, “ Oh well we’re not in Greece for long”. This attitude gave me the attitude to make the most out of the small moments and was definitely a good reminder to not worry. He never failed to be kind when the ladies who were selling flowers. When we all kept our heads down so we didn’t get conned he always made sure to support them. He also payed attention really well and if there was a group of the girls on their own he made sure to check in on them or go with them to make sure they were safe. Also can’t forget he was willing to go chase after anyone if they pickpocketed us!Read more

      Where’s my phone?

      May 12, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

I have always been a massive fan of the ancient Greeks (though not the mythology oddly enough), but this day was finally the day that I would be able to go to the acropolis, the location of so many amazing stories… and I forgot my phone. The one place I was most excited for and I forgot my phone. Luckily Faith helped me out and took photos of me and for me to help me out for the day. There definitely was a nice benefit of not having to be distracted by my phone all day, but man, I would have taken so many more photos while I was here. Oh and it was super slick! Not sick, almost everywhere the ground was marble and had been worn down till it was as slick as ice! Being able to spend a few hours was definitely a major highlight of my trip!Read more

      Athen, Akropolis, Shoppen

      September 16, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Heute also Athen! 13:00, 35° . 😵‍💫Read more

      Akropolis 🏛️

      October 18, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Read more

      Die Akropolis

      December 29, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

      Athens socializing

      December 15, 2023 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

There is said to have been an inside joke in the 90s :
'What is the capital of Albania? - Omonoia. At the time this was
a reference to the large proportion of Albanian residents in the Athens neighbourhood.
A few hundred metres from the metro station, my hostel is in the middle of a district that reminds me more of Morocco: the pavements are rather worn, there are vegetable vendors lined up next to snack stalls and electronic accessory shops - all selling the same thing. How do the mobile phone case shops that have recently appeared actually earn their money? Surely the profits from plastic covers shouldn't be that high?
Actually, I feel comfortable here despite the dingy impression and I've had very good experiences with Moroccans and Albanians so far anyway. ☺️
Walking through the neighbourhoods, I try to formulate my impressions. There are gaps here and there in the rows of houses. Destroyed houses fall into disrepair next to new buildings, here and there you can simply look into the cellars of the houses or climb in. There are pavements in some neighbourhoods, but they are not always narrow. You then take to the streets.
The nearby meat market fulfils my expectations: here you can see fish on ice, sheep without ice (without skin) and everything in between.

Building here must be quite expensive - if you have to reckon with an ancient building being uncovered at any time when digging the cellar and the house either having to be built on stilts or losing part of its footprint.
Some buildings seem to adapt to the ruins and have been built around and on top of them - old and new coexist.

I search for peace and quiet here for a long time - and rarely find it. The sound of the many cars and scooters penetrates every alleyway and mixes into a permanent background noise that I try to escape. Without pads in my ears, I am stressed.
I finally escape to the city's parks and find a good jogging route, which also gives me a good view of the city.

In the hostels, I change my strategy and now often talk to new people - unlike at the beginning of my trip, when I was just starting out.
In contrast to the beginning of my trip, when I travelled through the country for a long time with almost no contact 😃. It's also nice to socialise and that's how I get to know Jonas and Ashley. Together we explore several exit rooms - first on the trail of an investigator in a haunted house, then in a psychiatric institution (with actors) and finally we brew the elixir of life.

In the evening, I sit together with Napoleon, Cinderella, Princess Tiana, Mr Addams and Mia Khalifa in the games cafe and play charades.
During our group self-discovery, we also exchange cultural idiosyncrasies and get on really well.

      Athens

      November 12, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Quick overnight in Athens before our cruise departure. We were surprised to learn that the notable ruins in Athens and Ephesus are roughly the same age, given that Ephesus is in so much better condition. Plus you were allowed to get much closer with those in Ephesus (like sitting in the theater and walking on the stage), so they get my vote.

Got to see the truly one-of-a-kind “changing of the guards” ceremony at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and the running of the Authentic Marathon (starts in Marathon and ends at the Panathenaic Stadium).

Glad we checked the box but wouldn’t rush to return—Turkey is a much better value and we love the food there.

      Athen 🏛

      November 3, 2022 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Acropolis Now with John & Helen

      May 29, 2019 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

A long day, we caught up with good friends John and Helen, who flew from Heathrow. We arrived in Athens just after 1.30am, and they arrived at 2.45 am. Waiting for us was a driver, to take us to our accommodation. The journey was 45 minutes through empty streets (the best way to go!), and we checked in to our little apartment at about 4am and grabbed a few hours of much needed sleep. Later that morning, before we ventured out, we were moved into a bigger apartment which was a bit more room. That done, we went in search of much needed coffee and breakfast, only a hundred metres or so away.

The next few steps had us in the shadow of the Acropolis. There was quite a queue to get in, and we were convinced to take a guide, including entry ticket to jump the queue. Good in theory, but the guide moved so slowly, she bored us to tears, so after 45 minutes, we escaped and headed up the top by ourselves. Lesson learned (note to anyone coming to the Acropolis: don’t be tempted to do this to beat the queue! Tickets are apparently available on line, and you will be able to scan and walk through!)

It was quite arm, and a glorious day. The Parthenon (otherwise known as the Temple of Athena) is undergoing renovations, so there’s scaffolding and cranes around, but it remains an iconic structure.
