    Kathmandu day 1

    September 24, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

We arrived yesterday evening in Kathmandu after an exhausting 8 hours to Dubai, 4 hour wait and 4,5 hour flight to Nepal.

Hectic city - similar to Dar or India. Everything is exceptionally cheap. Proper dinner with drinks for 4 = R312.

Spend the day visiting the Swayambhunath and shopping.

  • Day 2 Via Lukla to Phakding

    September 25, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

    2652m

Mountain flight to Lukla and trek to Phakding.

The mountain flight into Lukla was spectacular and the landing an exciting beginning to the trek - one end of the runway is 60m higher than the other.

In Lukla, we met up with sherpa guides and porters before heading off on the trek towards Phakding. Followed the Dudh Kosi, the river that flows down from the Himalayas, crossing hanging bridges along the way. Saw the mani stones, which boulders carved with Buddhist inscriptions. Lots of pine and cedar woods. +- 7km trek.

  • Day 3 Phakding/Namche Bazaar

    September 26, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

    Altitude 3450m

The trek to Namche Bazaar is known for a few things.

    It's high hanging bridges
The hectic 2nd half accent. 2700 to 3450
    The lovely waterfalls

It lived up to all three.

We saw numerous trains of Yak and donkey taking supplies into the mountains. The walk was reasonable - 11.3km but the last accent constantly steep.

We are sleeping in a nice tea house, had a hot shower and a hot honey whiskey.

  • Day 4 Namche Bazaar

    September 27, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    Elevation: 3440m

We spend a day in Namche Bazaar acclimatising to the altitude. Did a walk to the Tenzing Norgay Sherpa museum and cargo landstrip. Main aim was to get the acclimatisation going with a steep climb. Afternoon was spend watching a documentory on Sherpas being the real heroes on Everest summits.

  • Day 5 Namche Bazaar/Thyangboche

    September 28, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

    Elevation: 3810m

The route from Namche to Tengboche route is unbelievably beautiful - the Dudh Kosi is far below and Thamserku, Kantega, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Everest rise in front. Woods, rhododendron forests, mani walls, chorten (stupas), and suspension bridges across the river make this a lovely walk. We crossed paths with the Yak trains on the way. The workhorses of the Himalayas

The walk was a little more than 9 km but we left at 0800 and arrived at 1500. Just in time for the afternoon meditation at the monastery.

  • Day 6 Thyangboche/Dingboche

    September 29, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

    7h 8km Elevation: 4410m

We started the morning at 0500 to watch the sunrise, surrounded in an amphitheatre of mountains.

Left at 0730 down stone steps through rhododendrons, birches, and conifers.

The trek to Dingboche then took us out of the woods into the Alpine ecosystem with shrubs and copious amounts of little flowers. Midway we crossed the 4000m mark.

3/4 of the way we stopped at a lookout point with the junction of two rivers. The sight was just overwhelming - white rocks streaming down a hillside like a river.

    September 30, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

    Elevation: 4410m

  • Day 8 Dingboche/Lobuche

    October 1, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

    Elevation: 5000m

The ascent towards Everest Base Camp continues through Alpine meadows and summer yak pastures towards the end of the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. The steep climb to the top - 400m in assent took as to one of sacred sites on the walk. Multiple stone monuments with praying flags are scattered across the plato to remind us of the Sherpas and other climbers who died in Everest or were associated with Everest. The landscape is also now extremely rocky with little vegetation.

Temperature also plummeted to below zero.

We got Lobosche at 1500 and ascended to a hill at the back to finally get to the 5000m mark.

  • Day 9 Lobuche/Gorak Shep/Everest Base Ca

    October 2, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

    Elevation: 5300m

We left Lobuche at 0600 and arrived back at the tea house at 1700. 10hours of walking above 5000m

It started snowing last night and it continued into the day. We got to Basecamp early afternoon.

    This was a tough...tough day

The higher altitude maked this day's trekking quite challenging. The Changri Glacier looms ahead as the trek heads for Gorakshep, a small, usually frozen, lake, by lunchtime. Relaxed and got adjusted to the altitude before the attempt to reach Everest Base Camp

After lunch, we trekked to Everest Base Camp. The route follows the Khumbu Glacier with its intriguing 15m (49ft)-high seraces of ice, a feature unique to Himalayan glaciers. Returned to Gorakshep for an overnight stay.

  • Day 10 Gorak Shep via Kala Pattar to Phe

    October 3, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Saw a different view of Everest today, with a trek up to Kala Pattar. Known to have the best views of Everest, this is a challenging trek, but worth it. Did not go all the way and stopped at 5300m

Began the descent from Kala Pattar, heading for Pheriche. This is not the most challenging of hikes, but the altitude made the many uphill sections below Gorakshep seem tough. The view were quite spectacular.

  • DAY 11 : Medical evac to Kathmandu

    October 4, 2017 in Nepal ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Sue made it past 5100m and fell very sick on day 9 with altitude sickness. Her oxigen was below 52%. Should be 75%

I continued to Everest base camp but one of the guides walked her 8km down to Pheriche - a hell of a walk. She sounded ok via a satellite phone on the 1st night but I only got back to her on the afternoon of day 10, after a 10hour hike and she was not able to operate at all. Oxigen was 54%. We managed to get her to 65% - out of the danger zone but not able to hike the 40km back.
We've got a medic airlift approved for this morning and just landed in Katmandu. She is much beter but has to stay in the hospital till tomorrow.
