  • Marburg (dinner w/ Moritz's family)

    June 13, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

We met Emmett after his semester at university here. What a beautiful medieval town! The Brothers Grimm went to university here, and there are statues around town from their fairy tales. We had dinner with Moritz's family, it had been 5 years since we saw them! We hosted Moritz 2018-19.Read more

  • Rothenburg - A Fairytale Town!

    June 14, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Germany's best preserved walled town is adorable, full of colorful houses and shops, half-timbered buildings, city walls and towers. I took a couple hundred photos in one day! We did the Night Watchman tour and learned a lot. This guy has been doing this tour for 33 years!Read more

  • Rothenburg Medieval Town Wall & Gates

    June 14, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Whoa this is an amazing place! The wall dates from 1142, there are 46 towers, and you can walk the 2 miles of wall that once protected this stunning town! It was bombed at the end of WW2, but the US Assistant Secy of War had grown up with paintings of Rothenburg - his mother had visited and often talked about it. He ordered that artillery not be used. They took a white flag out to meet the Nazis and asked them to leave and spare the town. The German commander agreed, defying Hitler's orders to fight to the end. 32% of the town had been bombed, but not the old city center. After the war, people from around the world donated money to help restore the town. Their names are all along the walkway of the wall.Read more

So who knew that Munich was hosting the European Championship "football" (aka soccer) games..and that they kicked it off yesterday with a win over Scotland?! So they are celebrating big time today, and the Scots are good natured and partying right along with them! Lots of fans, lots of fun!!!

And wouldn't you know, it was also Brewer's Day today! Every two years the young brewers are honored in Marienplatz (main square) and pledge to uphold the City of Munich's Purity Law of 1487.

  • Dachau Concentation Camp

    June 16, 2024 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

Dachau was the first regular concentration camp and the longest camp in operation, from 1933-1945. It was a forced labor camp, and 32,000 documented prisoners were killed here (probably thousands more undocumented). It was also a training center for SS camp guards.Read more

  • Salzburg - About Town

    June 16, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

  • Salzburg - Augustiner Bräustübl

    June 16, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

This brewery was established in 1621 by Augustinian monks, and their recipe is the same one used today. There are 5 large beer halls, several smaller rooms and a huge beer garden, for a total of 2,400 seats. You grab a stonewear mug from the shelf, rinse it in cold water, and then they pour your a beer right from the barrel. There are a variety of food stalls to buy food from to bring to your table. I bought bread, gorgonzola-butter spread, olives, onion and some kind of stuffed pepper. A little picnic. The boys had schnitzel.Read more

Beautiful evening up at the Salzburg Fortress. We had the best table in the restaurant with a fantastic view. Then we had second row seats in an intimate setting for a classical music concert in a fabulous room in the castle overlooking the city. Storm
clouds added to the impressive views! Best of Mozart concert with a few other composers as well.

  • Hallstatt, Austria

    June 18, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

Hallststatt is a beautiful village that looks like a picture postcard. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site of 16th C alpine houses and alleyways. Salt mines brought wealth to the area, and the mines date back to prehistoric times. Apparently the town suffers from masses of tourists, and we saw a lot of signs asking tourists to please not shout and generally not to be too obtrusive or obnoxious. But there were not a ton of people when we were there fairly early around 9:30-10:00. By the time we left at 11:30 there was a good crowd.Read more

  • Melk Abbey on the Danube

    June 18, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

Massive Baroque Benedictine Abbey high up on an outcropping overlooking the town of Melk and the river Danube. The present building was built in the early 1700s, but the monks have lived and worked here since 1089. There are currently 22 monks living here now, but a new young monk will join the community this fall. There is a school for 900 students here as well (just a regular school).Read more

  • Cycling along the Danube - Wachau Valley

    June 19, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

Avalanche blocking the road! We had planned a lovely day in the Wachau Valley of Austria, cycling along the Danube River through small villages along the way. After an hour or so, we found the path closed due to an avalanche!!! Our options were to cycle over what was basically a small mountain with our 3-speed bicycles, or rerun to our village and enjoy an afternoon in the hotel spa (the only hotel we stayed in with a spa!). We chose spa! 😂Read more

  • Emmersdorf an der Donau (Austria)

    June 19, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Such a lovely, sleepy little village in the Wachau Valley on the Danube. This was across the river from Melk. Our little hotel was wonderful, with a great spa and romantic outdoor seating for the restaurant. There was a little self-serve market down the street. It was just a room with food. Grab what you need, use the notepad if needed to figure your total, and then put your cash in the money slot! Trust-based system!

It was nice to walk along the river at night. Then once it cooled down, we walked up the very steep hill to where most of the town was located (who knew?! It was hidden!). The church towered above us as we hiked up, looking beautiful against a purple sky at dusk.. The view up there was so great. So many cute houses well-kept with flowers and everything so clean.

  • Vienna at Night

    June 21, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 82 °F

It was so hot today, and we'd had our fill of sunny palace grounds. So we went back to our room to lie down for the afternoon. After we got up we decided to walk around town a bit. We headed down to the river where we found a lively scene with tons of young people and bars along the riverfront. Then walked down Kohlmarkt, full of designer shops. We saw several young guys walking around in tuxes, one of them carrying a mask! Going to a ball? Finally, we had drinks and dessert at Cafe Central , a traditional Vienna Cafe opened in 1878. It was later a key meeting place of the Viennese intellectual scene. Regulars included Trotsky, Freud, Stalin, and Hitler. It is absolutely gorgeous and looks like a cathedral inside!Read more

  • Graz, Austria

    June 22, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

    Graz

Graz is the capital of the Austrian federal state of Styria and the second-largest city in Austria, after Vienna. It's also a university town that I thought had a fun vibe. Tons of people up on top of the castle rock on Saturday night at the bars up there.Read more

  • Venzone, Province of Udine, Italy

    June 23, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

14th Century walled village, declared a National Monument and surrounding gorgeous mountains. In 1976 there were several earthquakes that severely damaged the town. But the town was rebuilt and restored in a relatively short period. The photos from before and after are remarkable! There were no tourists here other than a few cyclists.

We just stopped here for an hour or so. Would have loved to stay longer. Emmett and I each had a cappuccino and a pastry out on the square...$5 total.
