      Day 9

      On top of the world

      This day was stressful and rewarding in equal parts. Woke up early for a long day of driving that would end up being even longer. Remember that storm we experienced in the SE? Well the NE got it too, but with snow and sleet. Well, the roads still weren’t even touched until later this day. We were doing good staying on the main road until we needed to cut off from driving the coast up to our destinations. At one point we came 30miles or so from the coast rd and came to the base of a mtn that was one sheet of ice. All up to this point it was gradual incline and the ice was only in patches But lay a head of us now is a steep mountain pass. We attempted once and got stuck 250 meters from the base. Then we waited at the bottom deciding what to do when another tourist pulled up. We chatted about the mtn then they took off and made it to the top. Granted they had 4x4 but that gave us hope. We tried again. Made it a little higher before I backed out of it and thought about backtracking and adding 2.5 hours to the trip. At this point 4 other 2 wheel drive cars pull up (two of which are vans like ours). Two make it up to the top (well we assume they do, as you can’t see the top ). So we go for it. Fully committed with our little van with all but snow tires, And what a view…. Going down the other side was not as bad but after the mtn pass things cleared up a bit more. We made our two stops one being a hike up a mtn of 60+ flights of stairs (Chelseas idea). Then after the second stop we headed to our final resting place (of course our campground). But as we kept going. It felt as if our elevation just kept climbing. Up and up and up. It got more white and more frozen. But we finally made it. After 7.5 hours of driving we were able to pass out and get ready for the next day. The town were staying at has a population of 270 and this is one of the most visited places in the N of Iceland. They have one bar, one gas station, two restaurants (one that is closed for the season), one grocery store (very small), but 3 campgrounds and idk how many hotels!) So we hit up the only restaurant open for fish and chips and went to the frozen tundra of a campsite. More to come.Read more

      Kleine Wandertour

      Ich bin auf dem Zeltplatz die zweite Nacht geblieben. Heute wollte ich mit Tom (ein Mensch, der mit mir auf der Fähre war) eine kleine Wanderung unternehmen. So wanderten wir zu dem nahegelegenen Geothermalgebiet. Hier sprudelt in Löchern der Schlamm und Schwefelgas tritt aus der Erde.
      Im Anschluss trennten wir uns. Er wollte in der Stadt etwas essen, ich die zwei nahegelegenen Vulkankrater mir angucken.
      Direkt das erste Auto nahm mich mit. Es war ein ca 60 Jahre altes kanadischen Paar. Es war wirklich sehr schön mit fne beiden. Auf dem Rückweg des ersten Vulkans wollte ich mir noch eine Höhle angucken, von der ich gehöer habe. Sie meinten nur, na dann kommen wir mit und gucken wir uns die auch noch.
      Von. Dort aus wanderte ich den sehr großen (wenn ich mich nicht irre der Größte europaweit) Vulkankrater hoch. Von hier hatte man einen suer Blick auf den See Mývatn.      Read more

      Day 13

      Rückenwind!!!

      Ich hatte mir gestern noch das Frühstücksbuffet in dem Hotel dazu gebucht. So ging es dann gestärkt auf den Weg. Ich kam heute auch super vorwärts da ich endlich mal längere Zeit Rückenwind hatte. So flog nur so hin. Leider nieselte es bis in den Nachmittag hinein.
      Für die Pause fuhr ich eine Straße abseits der Hauptstraße 4 km Richtung es Campingplatzes, in der Hoffnung mich dort trocken und warm unterstellen zu könne. Leider hatte sowohl dieser als auch das Café nicht auf. So klingelte ich an einem der fünf weiteren Häuser. Die Dame bat mich nur zögernd rein und bot mir den Vorraum an. Dieser reichte mir vollkommen: er war sehr warm und trocken. So konnte ich essen und meine Klamotten trocknen lassen.

      Nach der Pause fuhr ich 10 km weiter. Hier ging eine Straße ab, die zu einem sehr großen Wasserfall führte. Da ich aber wusste, dass ich den hin und Rückweg von insgesamt 48 km mit dem Fahrrad nicht schaffen würde, schloss ich mein Fahrrad an der Kreuzung ab und trampte bis zu dem Wasserfall. Dieser war wirklich sehr beeindruckend.
      Für den Rückweg fand ich sich sehe schnell ein Auto, das mich zu meinem Fahrrad brachte.
      Jetzt hatte ich noch 25 km vor mir. Ich dachte, das würde durch den Rückenwind gar kein Problem werden. Allerdings machte die Straße eine Biegung, so hatte ich plötzlich wieder anstrengenden Wind von vorne. Kurz vor meinem Ziel war ich schon echt ko. Ich konnte aber schon von weitem sehen, dass es nochmal ordentlich aufwärts ging. Darauf hatte ich gar keine Lust mehr. Deswegen fragte ich ein Paar auf dem Parkplatz kurz davor, ob sie mich mitnehmen könnten. Sie hatten damit kein Problem. Allerdings war es fragwürdig, ob das Fahrrad in den Van passen würde. Nach einigen probieren passte es schließlich. Zum Glück! So kam ich ziemlich erschöpft am Zeltplatz an.      Read more

      Hot Tub

      Heute hatte ich mir einen Tag frei genommen. Ich wollte nur kurz einkaufen gehen und den Rest des Tages im nahegelegenen Thermalbad entspannen.
      Nachts hatte es aber ordentlich gewindet und geschneit, so dass ich sehr schlecht geschlafen hatte. So brauchte ich eine ganze Weile bis ich mich aufraffen konnte.
      Das Thermalbad war sehr schön gelegen, da man von hier eine super Aussicht hatte. Auch das Wetter war mit vollem Sonnenschein und blauen Himmel wirklich sehr gut.      Read more

      Myvatn

      Today we saw the first hot springs and we used the opportunity to refresh us in the hot pot in myvatn "the Green lagoon". It was unique! Nice sunset in a warm Pool in the lava ground.
      In the night we even saw northern lights which made this day unbelievable!
      A really nice trip is driving to dettifoss. But take the route West of the canyon. There you will have a normal road instead of a gravel road with lots of pothols like we had. It was constantly bumping 🙈      Read more

      Hild Hostel

      We stayed at a campsite with cabin tonight. It's difficult to find cheap accommodation in this area for four persons. And actually, this hostel is not cheap but the facilities are comprehensive. The only drawback is that the cabin is not located near the common toilet. We have to walk several minutes in open space to the common toilet. It would be nice in good weather but it was sill raining.Read more

      Camping Myvatn

      Een mooie camping bij het vliegveld van Myvatn / Reykjahlid met een overdekte kookgelegenheid en picknick tafels + gasstellen en verwarmde nette toiletgebouwen

      We wilden eigenlijk naar Asbyrgi maar vanwege nieuwe Covid regels wilden ze daar niet meer als 200 gasten hebben en waren dus al volgeboekt.
