      ...und dann geht's in die Stadt..

      ...den Beginn machen wir im Hafen.
      Zum Glück kamen wir gerade rechtzeitig - das 'Conferenz-Zentrum' drohte umzufallen, aber Daniel konnte es gerade noch auffangen.. 😅

      Zum 200jährigen Bestandsjubiläum würde 1986 die Skulptur 'Sonnenfahrt' im Hafen aufgestellt.

      Ebenfalls beim Hafen gibt es viele schöne Hochhäuser mit vielen Fensterscheiben, das geputzt werden müssen ....ein Job, in luftiger Höhe 🤭      Read more

      Was es nochzu sehen gibt...

      Yesterday in Iceland ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

      PUFFIN.... Papageientaucher in allen möglichen Varianten.
      Und - als wir im Café saßen und uns die leckeren Zimtschnecken zugute führten, entdeckte Petra, dass an der Straßenecke davor unsere lieben Schwestern mit dem Trolley im Dienst waren. 🥰 Natürlich haben wir mit ihnen geplaudert und so einiges über unsere Brüder erfahren - zum Beispiel, dass ca. 40 Brüder und Schwestern aus Schweden nach Island gezogen sind, da hier ihre Hilfe gebraucht wird. 😇
      Was uns noch aufgefallen ist, an jeder Ecke gibt es Kameras 🧐...wohlein Grund, warum es kaum Kriminalität gibt.

      Day 3

      Gold and White

      The weather decided to play along and we had an excellent day - or as excellent as we could expect.
      Our tour started early to the area known as the golden circle. First Stop, Hakid visitor center, where we could see the biggest lake in Iceland, where the old Parliament used to take place in the year 970 AC. From there we also see the division between the north American and European tectonic plates.

      Second stop, the Gullfoss falls, formed by glacier water. Again we were lucky as the sky was clear and the visibility amazing. Not a hint of rain.

      From the Gullfoss we took a monster truck to the longest glacier in Iceland - Langjökull. Incredible immensity of white surrounding us, absolutely isolated from everyone and everything else. We have learned so many interesting things about glacier, how they are formed and melted by volcanic activity that it's impossible to describe in few lines.

      After being back, we experienced the opposite as we observed geysers - including Geyser, the geyser that named all geysers. We have experienced two nice eurpting but obviously it got shy as we were filming it.

      The landscape on the way back was amazing, including driving by the Kerid crate - for my next visit to Iceland - and some stunning ice mountains.      Read more

      Heute ging es erst spät für uns los. Auf eine Waltour bei wirklich Eiseskälte und starkem Wind. Zum Glück haben wir Schneeanzüge bekommen. Ich hatte Skiunterwäsche, normale Kleidung, den Schneeanzug und noch eine Schneehose und noch eine Skijacke an.
      Aber der Anblick war es wert! Wir haben tatsächlich welche gesehen! 3 Stunden frieren haben sich also gelohnt.

      Day 19

      Day 17/18 Reykjavik and at sea

      Well the last Reykjavík day was supposed to be the day we finally went to go whale watching.... But, you guessed it, the weather gods simply will not play ball and it was cancelled (again) due to high winds and rough seas. Having explored most of Reykjavík in the previous two days and the alternative tours on offer not being that attractive, we opted for a day on board.

      Consequently there is little to report apart from our stash of “O” points which you get for winning various games, reaching levels that might enable us to buy the ship when we get off!

      We enjoyed both Reykjavik and Iceland generally, I can report that I bought back to the ship a few examples of locally brewed beers (aside from the ones I sampled on land) and they are uniformally excellent. Even the local lager (Polar Beer) is passable and the other boutique beers are really good.

      We are now en route to Derry, Northern Ireland and we’ve attached some photos of things around the ship to give an idea of the facilities on offer on this small 700 passenger vessel. Tonight we have an invite to Drinks with the Captain for a couple of hours before we due at the specialist Italian restaurant on board “Toscana”.

      Day 8

      Last Day in Iceland

      We had a great last day in Reykjavik. Elliot and I went to the best bakery in town to get Snúður - the popular Icelandic cinnamon roll. The place was packed (a good sign) and we got a batch fresh from the oven... they lived up to the hype and didn't last long. Then we walked around Reykjavik and did some tourist shopping. I found an amazing raincoat at Reykjavik Raincoats which should come in handy back home. Jocelyn found an Icelandic wool sweater at the same shop before we get to a souvenir shop to score t-shirts, coffee mugs, sweatshirts and magnets to bring home. We decided to walk down to the sea to see the Sun Voyager - a beautiful Viking ship sculpture. That walk took us along the seafront to our lunch destination at the popular hot dog stand Baejarins Beztu Pylsur. Another long (and this time, much colder) line and, again, another hit. Fried and fresh onions along with a special sauce made it worth the wait. On our way back into town, we walked up the famous Rainbow Road (or Skólavörðustígur) on the way back to the church where we had parked. We then made the drive to the Blue Lagoon. This was the first thing we planned on the trip and one of the more popular destinations in Iceland but it has been closed for the last 10 days because of an eruption. Even after our AirBnB host recommended we not go because of the lava flows, we made the trip in about 75 minutes since we had to detour around closed roads from the lava. It was certainly a good decision as we had a great time. Everyone had face masks while soaking in the briny mix which has a strong light blue color from the algae and minerals. The place was enormous and even in 2.5 hours, we didn't explore the entire pool but we all had a drink from the bar and had a very relaxing afternoon in the steam clouds coming out of the pool. After the drive home, we were starving and immediately went to dinner. Unfortunately, our day ended on a sour note with probably the worst food on the trip. But we had a great and full day and now home to pack up for our flight tomorrow. No aurora expected tonight but we are so fortunate to have seen it on Tuesday. We had an amazing stay but all good times must come to an end and tomorrow we fly out early.Read more

      Wir setzen unser Schlechtwetter-Programm fort. Nachdem wir im Flughafenhotel die Ersatzventile für unsere Räder abgeholt habe (vielen Dank, Peter & Evelyne für den Botendienst) schauen wir uns Reykjavik an.

      Neben den Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten wie Hallgrimskirkja, Harpa, Sólfar und Regnbogagatan, ist Reykjavik eine bunte, lebendige kleine Stadt in der es viel zu entdecken gibt, mit vielen netten Kaffees, kreativen Künstlern, die sich an allen Ecken verwirklicht haben und einer Unmenge Souvenir-Shops.       Reykjavik immer wieder schön, doch deutlich lebhafter als in vergangenen Jahren. Heute auch mit Sonnenschein. Gefühlt waren wir in jedem Winkel der Hauptstadt. Da ich heute den Stadtführer gespielt habe, bekomme ich heute Abend, zur "Guten Nacht", wieder Isländische Sagen von Mathias vorgelesen. Vielleicht etwas über die Weihnachtskatze, welche Kinder frisst, die nicht artig waren?

      Die Konzerthalle, Seitenstraße zur Einkaufsstraße und die angeblich bekannteste Hot Dog Bude der Welt. Schlange war mir zu lang, Hot Dog sah auch nicht anders aus als bei der Bude am Campingplatz.......die Besonderheit, es sind hier natürlich Lammwürste.Read more

      Reykjavik

      Für die Übernachtung im Gästehaus in Reykjavik sind wir 30 Jahre zu alt. Es wimmelt im Gästehaus von Jugendlichen, lauter Musik und vielen diversen undefinierbaren Gerüchen. Es erinnert an Klassenfahrt und 70 Jahre Flair, aber alle sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Wahrscheinlich verlaufen sich nicht viele Oldies in dieses Establishment. Aber wir müssen heute Nacht auch aufbrechen zum Flughafen, so wird es hier wohl eher nicht stören, wenn wir Krach machen. Wahrscheinlich sind die jungen Leute dann noch gar nicht zu Bett...

      Auf dem Weg in die Hauptstadt sind wir durch einen 6 Kilometer langen Tunnel gefahren. Das war beeindruckend.
      Wir sind noch etwas durch die Stadt gegangen und haben ein Bier beim danske kro getrunken. Dort konnten wir auch dänisch sprechen. Ansonsten ist hier immer alles auf englisch. So war es fast schon etwas Heimat, wenn wir morgen nach Billund fliegen.      Read more
