      Kulturelle Höhenflüge & Linksverkehr

      Wir führen ein neues Feature in unseren Footprints ein, und zwar Impressionen ohne Kontext:

      - Wäscheleine am Meer

      - Palmen

      - Ziege am Strand

      Gestern war unser letzter Tag in Dublin und es hat bis kurz nach Mittag in Strömen geregnet. Na dann, auf ins Vikinger-Museum. Sehr spannend, dass es sich die Nordmänner hier gemütlich gemacht haben. Speziell gefreut hat uns Serien-Nerds natürlich, dass wir diverse Namen aus „Vikings“ wieder erkannt haben - so können wir uns einreden, dass wir uns beim Serienschauen weitergebildet haben. Wir ritten auf der  möchtegern-kulturell-intelligenten Welle gleich weiter und fanden uns in Dublins ältestem Buchladen wieder. Als Souvenir haben wir uns Oscar Wilds „Dorian Grey“ in Hardcopy gegönnt und zum Dinner gingen wir schick ins „Ivy“ essen. Das mussten wir uns gönnen, denn ab jetzt wird’s kein Zuckerschlecken mehr: wir verlassen die Stadt und der Linksverkehr wartet auf uns (respektive auf Stef, aber MJ fühlt mit!).

      Heute ging’s dann endlich los. MJ und Stef on the road again. Wir lieben das! Schon spannend, wie sich diese Art des Herumreisen verändert hat. 2005 sass MJ noch mit Landkarten auf dem Beifahrersitz und musste lotsen (jeder der MJ’s Orientierungssinn kennt, weiss, dass das mehr schlecht als recht funktionierte). 2012 haben wir uns dann ein Navi „gegönnt“ (musste man natürlich extra zahlen) und heute schaltet man mal eben schnell Google Maps ein, easy peasy. Immerhin, so muss sich Stef nicht auch noch aufs orientieren konzentrieren, denn im Linksverkehr fahren sei mit 25ig irgendwie einfacher gewesen als heute mit 40ig (Zitat Stefan Roschi). 

      Wir haben uns trotzdem entschieden, die etwas längere, dafür schönere Route zu nehmen, was sich gelohnt hat. Wir wurden bereits mit ersten wunderschönen Aussichten auf grüne Felder, steile Klippen und das wilde Meer belohnt. Gegen Abend sind wir dann schliesslich in Cork angekommen, einem kleinen, schmucken Städtchen. Wir werden es morgen noch ausgiebig erkunden, aber ein erster Blick beim Abendspaziergang hat schon Lust auf mehr gemacht. Es scheint auf jeden Fall gerechtfertigt zu sein, dass die Corker ihre Stadt als heimliche Hauptstadt Irlands sehen.       Read more

      Mill Street and Cork

      We left Country Kerry with a walk around the Torc Waterfall.
      Off to Mill Street to meet Tim's sister Maura and brother Mikey for lunch.
      To Cork after that but traffic awful so only walked in the City Centre and visited the English Market, one of the world's oldest covered markets since 1788.Read more

      Lasciata Dublino puntiamo verso sud. Il paesaggio ed il cielo d'Irlanda, come cantava la Mannoia, sono un vero incanto. Dopo due ore e mezza arriviamo nella cittadina universitaria di Cork, appoggiata sul fiume Lee. Murales curiosi, una splendida cattedrale, le immancabili casette colorate e in mattoncini rossi, un centro in pieno fermento. Per pranzo ci siamo infilati dentro l'English Market dove il pesce fresco ed i crostacei abbondano e si lasciano mangiare, preparati al momento, volentieri.Read more

      Day 8–10

      Cork

      March 12 in Ireland ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

      Cork. Der erste richtige Stop in Irland und wir würden gleich mit dem typischen irischen Wetter begrüßt: Nieselregen, Wind und 10 Grad. So ein Wetter ist natürlich ideal um sämtliche Indooraktivitäten machen zu können. Unser erster Stop war der English Market, eine große Lebensmittelhalle, die durch ihre Gerüche und Eindrücke vor allem Emilia beeindruckte. Tizian wollte anschließend in ein Museum, denn was sollte man sonst bei Regen machen? Doch leider informierten wir uns nicht auf der offiziellen Seite des Museums und standen dann im strömenden Regen vor verschlossenen Toren, nachdem wir knapp 30 Minuten zu Fuß gelaufen waren. War mal wieder typisch für uns. Trotzdem ließen wir uns nicht aufhalten und besuchten die Uni von Cork und ein kleines Museum, welches die Geschichte Irlands aufgearbeitet hatte.
      Trotz dem Regens hat Irland seinen ganz eigenen Charme.      Read more

      Day 16 Cork, Ireland

      A lovely day spent exploring Cork. We were up early to get to the English Market to collect all our food for Christmas. Luckily we got there early, but within 15 minutes there were queues at every counter. Not only were the shop keepers patient and good at recommending food, but we had some interesting conversations with others in the queues including a girl who has been to NZ last year and had stayed in Ashburton where she had a relative! Another lady was heading to NZ in four weeks to walk the Milford Track. We were amused that a young shop keeper asked us where we were from and did we eat Tim Tams! The market was great with an endless selection of cheeses, breads, meat, and seafood. We carried our supplies back to our Air b n B and then found coffee in a nice cafe around the corner. The next couple of hours were spent looking around the shops which were extremely busy, and also enjoying some lovely singing from buskers on the street. We had a pub lunch before heading off for a lovely walk exploring some old Cork streets and churches. The walk took us up and down narrow streets and through several old lanes and alleys. We returned to the flat to take a break and watch some TV, before heading back into town for dinner at Market Lane which was just as lovely as we remembered it, as we had eaten here in 2018. It has been reasonably warm all day but by the time we walked home it was drizzling. Town was reasonably quiet compared to last night. We are bracing ourselves for the trip back down four flights of steps tomorrow, now with suitcases and also our food supplies. We will get a taxi to the airport to pick up our rental car, ready to drive to Killarney for Christmas.Read more

      Cork

      Morgens früh brachte mich Birgit zum Bus aus Kenmare nach Killarney. Der fährt dummerweise nur sehr selten. Also musste ich schon den ersten morgens nehmen, um nicht viel zu spät in Cork zu sein. In Cork besuchte ich Diana, ich habe sie vor 6 Jahren auch hier in Irland kennengelernt. Ursprünglich kommt sie aber aus der Slowakei. Sie machte in Irland ein Auslandssemester und ist dann später hergezogen, weil ihr das Leben in der Slowakei zu wenige Möglichkeiten und Freiheiten bietet. Sie wohnt jetzt seit 3 Jahren in Irland und ist dort auch sehr glücklich. Wir aßen zu Mittag einen selbstgemachten irischen Kartoffelbrei mit Kohl. Danach zeigte sie mir die Uni in Cork, einen Park und abends tranken wir dann noch in zwei verschiedenen Pubs ein Guinness. Es war wirklich schön sie Mal wieder zu sehen, über die alten Zeiten zu sprechen und auch über Politik und wie das Leben eben zum Beispiel in der Slowakei ist. Auch über die fast schon dramatische Wohnungssituation in Irland hat sie mir berichtet insgesamt war es ein wirklich schöner Nachmittag und schön Mal wieder in Cork zu sein. Cork hat zwar vielleicht nicht das schönste Zentrum, aber irgendwie ist es gemütlich. Es gibt viele Pubs mit Musik. Es ist sehr international und bunt und offen. Hier sind alle willkommen. Und das ist ja eigentlich wichtiger als besonders schöne Häuser.Read more

      Adventure of a Lifetime - Coldplay

      Dad left for Cork City at half eight this morning, accompanied to the bus stop by Mom. I awoke an hour later and got packed and ready for the day. Since we left our bags, we went to cafes and gift shops, along with a few quirky misc. stores. At the jeweler, a lovely cashier gave us a map of Kinsale with a few different trails. The two of us decided to hike to James Fort in the harbor. Once there, we explored the ruins of the fort and enjoyed the incredible views. Around 2:45 we picked up our luggage at the lodge, and headed back into town for a quick snack. We hopped on the bus to Cork at 4 and walked from our drop off point to the hotel where Dad is staying. Mom and I ate a delicious plate of charcuterie, followed by a great dessert. Dad met me in the hotel lobby around 11, and we all chatted before going to bed. His conference went well.Read more

      Day 15 Cork, Ireland

      A long day but it finished well. We left our flat at 10am, lugging our suitcases down the many flights of stairs in the flat, to a nearby bus stop, hauling them on board and then off the bus, lugging them down many steps of the subway and then onto a tube bound for Heathrow. Then off the train, around the airport and finally checking them in to arrive on Cork- talk about a work out! Our plane was delayed half an hour but finally boarded at 2 30. The air hostess was lovely, but now we can see why Air NZ is so highly rated. The plane was basically moving before everyone was sitting and the checks they did were scant. Nothing but water offered during the flight and it all seemed very basic. We were however flying on the busiest day for Heathrow in three years! Our accomodation in Cork is above a pub- that is three narrow flights of stairs above the street. More heavy lifting! We rewarded ourselves with a mini pub crawl around the main area which is really close. Every pub was full and there were many people out with it being Friday night before Christmas. Fun though and great atmosphere. We then returned to the pub below where we are staying for a beautiful pub dinner. It was a lovely end to a long day. Hope we get some sleep as ear plugs provided and lots of jovial noise coming up from below.Read more
