      Bologna

      8. juli 2023, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We set off for Bologna excited to be meeting up with Shannon and Theresa who were arriving the following day. It was so lovely to see them again after 3 months. We felt obliged to give them an Italian induction and made sure they did a lot of walking, sightseeing and sampled as many Italian foods as possible. Bologna is famous as the home of “bolognaise”. They are developing into a ‘food destination” and we decided to do a pasta making course in the home of a local Italian “Grazia” who not only was a great pasta teacher but gave lots of personal family insights into Italy.
The pasta in this region is made from double zero flour and eggs, different from the flour and water used in the south (like Spaghetti). So they don’t actually have Spaghetti Bolognaise but rather use a tagliatelle pasta. They also use the word “Ragu” rather than bolognaise but that may change from a marketing perspective. At our course we made tagliatelle and tortellini. She then made a bolognaise sauce or “ragu” and served us a lovely lunch of both.
After weeks of lovely weather, just as the girls arrived it turned hot with the start of a heat wave which was a real test (and excuse for gelato).
Our sightseeing highlights included a guided walking tour, a 500 step tower climb, several incredible churches, at least 5 large ones that we saw, one of which is actually a complex of 7 churches (St Stefano) built over many time periods, the Basilica of San Petronio which was funded totally by the local inhabitants and is quite easy to see where they ran out of money and trimmed back the finishes and some specific sculptures and paintings. There was also the continuous battle as to who had the power and therefore what was allowed to proceed or not. Bologna grew as a university town and had a series of covered porticos that resulted from adding student accommodation on the first floor as the demand grew. The old university library and original anatomy rooms were open for a visit too. The university is the oldest in Italy (and the world) created by the students themselves as a place to collaborate.
And there was the food induction - pizza, pasta, gelato, granita, aperitif, tiramisu and pastries. We are continually amazed at the consistently high quality of Italian food. Everything is just delicious. We had to try a few varieties of Spritzes too as Prosecco featured everywhere, Aparol, Hugo, Limone, …

      Bologna

      22. juli 2023, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Ich hatte keine Vorstellung von Bologna. Null.

I had no idea of Bologna. Zero. We arrived in the morning and I knew right away that this city is different from other Italian cities that I know. And I've been to a few - Rome, Florence, Milan, Turin, Venice, Naples...
Is it because the city is governed by the left? Or because they are home to the oldest university in Europe? No idea.

The city is not big, the center is easy to walk through. There are a few remaining towers (there were hundreds of them at one time!), we went up one (~500 steps), churches, squares and 40 km of arcades 😯. The latter are great and I wonder why not every city has so many arcades. Sun and rain protection! Splendid!

On the first evening we immediately found us a regular pub, a nice little restaurant with awesome food and wonderful people next to our hotel. We went there 5 times in 3 days 😅 In the nearby park we went to a public DJ, in another at a street food festival with Birrabus (beer bus, with about 30 Italian craft beers).

We had a really good three days in Bologna. Great city, we'll be back for sure!

      Wycieczka do Bolonii🍝

      22. oktober 2023, Italia ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

      Bologna

      7. mars 2023, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Oh Bologna! Very pretty. Ticked my old buildings and little streets boxes for sure. Love the terracotta colours of all the buildings. Love the little parades everywhere - shelter pedestrians from rain and sun, and often house cafe tables as well.

I had lunch in Bologna and had decided I would aim for a big lunch and then I won't have to look for dinner again in Ferrara this evening. So I had two courses. Vegetable tortellini in a tomato sauce and vegetable caponata with a baked cheese (I think it was called Torino, but I might be wrong). After picking Italian so often in Berlin, I had really been looking forward to eating properly here. .... I didn't like it! The tortellini was too al dente (or maybe I always make it too soft) and felt like the dried tortellini we used to get in the supermarket when I lived in France. But that course was OK. The caponata, though? Again, might well be how it's supposed to be, but too me the vegetables were just mush. And I would swear that they used chicken stock in it. (Which they might. That wasn't advertised as vegetarian, just vegetables. Whereas the tortellini was advertised as vegetarian.) I couldn't finish it. Both because I was quite full, but also because it tasted like it wasn't vegetarian. Ah well. Next time, pizza - shouldn't go wrong with that surely.

Got the bus back to the station and then train back to Ferrara and walked back to the hotel (though I could have got a bus almost all the way).

      Zonked.

Have opened one of the cold beers I put in the fridge last night and I feel there may be an early night for me. Or maybe I will siesta and go out for a late ice cream. The early night feels most likely though.

      Bolonia - Módena

      10. mars, Italia ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

! Gratis !! Excelente caso de románico , con influencias bizantinas ( esto es cosecha mia). Animo a Carol a subir a la torre Ghirlandina. Mala hora. Bajo De la Torre hecho unos zorros. Espero haber quemado la mortadella .Les mer

      Bologna encuentro and tour

      3. februar, Italia ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

For the next 2 days, we participated in a tango encuentro near Bologna, dancing 10 hours a day. It was a nice atmosphere, great level of dancers, but the event was really big, with almost 400 dancers and not a great leader/follower balance. So it ended up being a bit of an up and down for me, and lots of sitting. On Saturday morning we went to Bologna and did a highlights VoiceMap tour. We walked around the city center, admiring beautiful cathedral, towers and also the famous group of terracota sculptures depicting mourning of the Christ. It is also called The Petrified Scream, and is truly a masterpiece, especially considering that it is from the 15th century. Overall, Bologna is a beautiful and rich cultural center.Les mer

      Bologna Day 5 Faenza, Brisighella

      16. november 2023, Italia ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

When asked by an Italian we met, why we were in Bologna for 5 days, we said so that we could do a day trip to Brisighella. His response was, "Mama Mia, why Brisighella? Nothing to do there!"
We took a train to Faenza where we had to change to a bus to Brisighella. As Faenza had a market this morning, we stopped for coffee and a poke around. We bought a Christmas tablecloth there.
Brisighella is a lovely tiny mediaeval town overlooked by castle, a tower and a church. We climbed up to the castle, but could not find a route through the windy web-like mediaeval streets to the tower. We must have walked the town streets many times over, looking for that route as we kept coming into laneways and buildings that looked familiar. We did have a delicious lunch of seafood entre and rabbit stew.

Dinner was at a Japanese restaurant called NIU taste different. Food was very fine and very good Japanese.
