    Arrival in Italy

    April 22 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We have arrived in Italy - feels surreal to be here. Set off in a bus with our 27 companions for Matera. Armando is our driver. The country side is lush green fields. All towns seemed to have multistory apartment blocks. After a while we were surrounded by mountains. We stopped at an autogrill for lunch. At these highway stops you order what you want from the cashier then take your receipt to the cooks who prepare what you ordered. There were rolls, wraps, pitta bread with crumbed chicken and chips in them, fruit salad and a salad bar plus more hot food and drinks. There were also lollies, biscuits, toys etc. John and I shared a wrap and fruit salad. I bought some Lindt chocolate.

Off we set again and passed quite close to Naples and could see Mount Etna in the distance. We arrived at Matera at about about 4pm. We walked through the old part of town to our hotel - Locanda di San Martino. We had room 32 on the first level. To get to the rooms you take the stairs outside and walk along the terraces.
Great views of the city from the terrace.
