      Painting class- Day 3

      Today kicked off with an optional critique (only one brave soul). It was raining so the morning lecture/demo was canceled and we sketched inside the Basilica de San Frediano (a 6th century church here in Lucca). The church was beautiful but I struggled to find a subject that spoke to me. (I kept thinking that maybe abstract painting would work better… though we weren’t permitted to paint inside).
      The rain cleared out for the afternoon and we were able to sit in a cafe on the Puccini plaza and watch Tom paint a demo. Construction noise and throngs of tourists made it difficult to hear/concentrate at times (plein air painting is so different than studio work). Tom helped several of us with human forms; he’s articulate and a good teacher. After class Paul and I strolled the city and visited a beautiful art supply store… it’s probably a good thing there isn’t a store like this in Estepona.
      Tonight was the group dinner and at my table we hailed from the USA, Spain, Latvia, and Switzerland. It was fun talking about our favorite artists and how we came to learn about Thomas Schaller and this course.
      We are painting on the city walls tomorrow and there’s no rain in the forecast!      Les mer

      Puccinis Geburtshaus

      Puccini wurde 1858 in Lucca geboren, studierte dort Musik und schrieb seine ersten Opern. Sein Vater verstarb als er 6 war, doch die Familie war so wohlhabenden das trotzdem alle seine 6 Geschwister zur Universität gehen konnten.

      In der alten Wohnung ist heute ein Museum, mit verschiedenen Klavieren und Kostümen (Uraufführungen, Festivals, etc). Außerdem ist in dem kleinen Museum ein Raum, der die Anfangs-Kullise von La Bohème zeigt.      Les mer

      Painting Class- Day 4

      The sun was shining (finally!) and after a not-so-great day yesterday I was more optimistic. Watercolor is so much harder than oils or pastels… and my drawing skills clearly need work (in the church yesterday I wanted to retreat to abstract painting). I woke early and took a stab at my painting from Pfanner.

      I think the other students felt the same way as there was a lot more positive energy when we met at our arranged spot. (With the exception of one woman who is very upset about the lack of structure and personal feedback…as this is/was my first class like this, I didn’t come with any expectations.)

      Today’s topic was landscapes, my favorite.
      Two great demonstrations on the Lucca city wall and I have pages of notes! I can’t wait to try to apply what I’ve learned. For example, on the topic of clouds, which I love to paint, he recommends that they are either the center of attention or very subtle so the rest of the painting can be the focus. I have several paintings that would definitely benefit from this small edit.)

      In the afternoon I asked for feedback (and triage) on my arches from Pfanner. It is not there yet …but I’m learning a lot.
      We skipped the Puccini concert and opted for a quiet dinner at de Nona Clara. We shared fried artichokes and both opted for non-pasta dishes—delicious! And now we are definitely going to have to go on diets when we get back home.      Les mer

      A little aperitivo before dinner. The drinks came after an hour, but they came with this spread of food. All tasty.

      This restaurant used to be a military outpost, with cannons up top and barracks below. It’s surrounded by one of the many parks at the edge of the wall. They say this outpost was never in battle because the enemies saw the wall and turned around.Les mer

      Toscana feelings Lucca 😍

      Heute haben wir die Stadt mal etwas genauer unter die Lupe genommen nachdem wir in unserer Unterkunft, ein kleines Stück außerhalb der Stadtmauern, ordentlich gefrühstückt hatten.
      Da wir keine passende Walking Tour für uns gefunden hatten (es gibt auch nicht sehr viele), haben wir uns dazu entschieden uns die Geschichte der Stadt in einem kleinen Museum näher zu bringen. Dass Teile der Altstadt und der inneren Mauern bereits auf 180 v. Chr. zurückzuführen sind, ist schon erstaunlich.
      Auch der öffentliche Platz, der im 1. oder 2. Jahrhundert als ursprüngliches Amphitheater von den Römern errichtet wurde, sprüht nur so vor Historie. Wo sich heute die Touristen tummeln und in den Cafés und Restaurants sitzen, fanden vor fast 2000 Jahren Pferderennen und Gladiatorenkämpfe statt 😅
      Ich würde lügen, wenn ich sagen würde, dass ich das nicht gerne mal miterlebt hätte - vielleicht aber nicht unbedingt den aktiven Part. ⚔️

      Im Anschluss an das Museum haben wir einige Sehenswürdigkeiten in der Stadt abgeklappert und haben eines der höchsten Gebäude Luccas erklommen. Nicht nur auf diesem Gebäude, sondern auch auf vielen anderen, sind kleine Gärten angelegt, was dem Stadtbild etwas wirklich besonderes verschafft. Vor allem weil teilweise kleinere Bäume andere benachbarte Häuser überragen.

      Die vielen Kirchen in Lucca lassen nur erahnen wie wichtig der katholische Glaube in dieser Stadt mal war oder vielleicht auch noch ist. Lucca befindet sich übrigens auch auf dem Jakobsweg und zieht somit seit Jahrhunderten Pilger in die Stadt.

      Nach einer etwas längeren Mittagspause samt Panini und einigen Kaltgetränken, haben wir uns auf die äußere Stadtmauer begeben, die seit ca. 400 Jahren in einwandfreiem Zustand ist. 4,2km laden zum Spaziergang, zur Fahrradfahrt oder zum Sporttreiben ein. Auch Spielplätze, Bars und Rasenflächen finden auf der äußerst breiten Mauer Platz. Sogar Autos haben sich hierhin mal verirrt, obwohl wir nicht herausgefunden haben, ob das nicht vielleicht sogar erlaubt ist mit dem Auto hochzufahren. Möglich ist es jedenfalls. 💁‍♂️
      Die Runde auf der Mauer zu drehen ist jedenfalls sehr beliebt bei Einheimischen und Touristen.

      Zum Abendessen sind wir heute einer Empfehlung unseres Gastgebers gefolgt und haben ein traditionelles „Trattoria“ besucht.
      Unsicher bzgl. der italienischen Esskultur und -gewohnheiten mussten wir uns allerdings nochmal ein paar Tipps von abholen, da wir eigentlich nur auf eine gute Pasta aus waren. 🙈
      Zum Glück haben wir in der Familie Leute, die sich auskennen. 🆒

      Noch ein Nachtrag zu unserer Liste von gestern:
      Die meisten Italienier sind äußerst Stilbewusst und sehr gut gekleidet!

      Morgen gehts für uns zurück nach Pisa und wir werden dem baufälligen Gebäude dort vielleicht mal einen kleinen Schubs geben. 😁

      Lucca - The Walled City

      Trip into Lucca today. Stood at a bus stop trying to work out the bus situation (public transport does not seem great here!) and then a friendly local pulls up and offers to take us … so we jump in. He didn’t speak English and wouldn’t take anything for the lift.

      Loved Lucca as soon as we entered the walled city! Compares to the feel of Venice only without the water and a lot more low key. Very Italian. Spent the afternoon getting lost in the cobbled streets, window shopping and visiting some of the many churches and cathedral.

      In the church San Michele in Foro there is an actual mummy encased in glass at the alter positioned as though it’s waving at you 😳 … time for a drink.

      Spritz, pizza and people watching at Piazza dell’Anfiteatro which is an oval area outlined by colourful Tuscan buildings - built on the former site of a Roman amphitheater.

      War eigentlich klar das wir noch nen Tag bleiben 😊
      So so schön hier .
      Mega Frühstück mir soviel liebe zubereitet 👌 einfach toll.
      Dann sind wir ein bisschen durch die Berge gecruist und dann natürlich nochmal in die Stadt auf nen Aperitif 🍸🍹.
      Wir haben gegen Abend überraschend Besuch bekommen von Gabi & Fritz aus Österreich.
      Die zwei lieben haben wir vor zwei Jahren auf unserer Toskana Fahrt kennengelernt 🥰
      Wir haben einen wunderschönen und so lustigen Abend verbracht 😁
      Auch unsere lieben Nachbarn am Platz Doris & Rainer aus Landshut sind mit uns mit versumpft 😂😅

      66. Etappe-Lucca-Siena

      Wieso 66. Etappe, du bist doch schon in Rom angekommen?! Ja, aber ich habe in den letzten zwei Wochen entschieden, noch die Via Francigena von Lucca nach Siena zu laufen. Ich bin ja in Lucca Richtung Florenz abgebogen und da ich früher, als ich dachte, in Rom war und erst Ende September nochmal nach Rom fahre, um mich mit meiner Freundin zu treffen, und mir diese Strecke empfohlen wurde, laufe ich jetzt eben weiter.
      Also bin ich morgens mit dem Zug nach Lucca gefahren. Ach ja, Lucca! Ich hatte ein neues Stempel-Heftchen und brauchte einen Anfangsstempel von der Kathedrale in Lucca. Das hat wunderbar geklappt und ich lief durch das gleiche Tor wie vor über einem Monat. Nur nicht nach links, sondern gerade aus. Ich freute mich, und auch wenn es die ganze Zeit über Asphalt ging, war es ok. Ich wusste, das wird keine schöne Etappe. Und die Aussichten waren zwischendurch ganz nett.
      Unterwegs habe ich mittags noch ein billiges zwei Gänge Menü bekommen, mit Nudeln mit Haselnuss Sauce und Rindfleisch mit Kartoffeln. Das Hostel war drei Kilometer vor Altopascio, ein durch Freiwillige betreutes Heim zum wohlfühlen, abends gab es mit Liebe gekochte Bruschetta, Nudeln mit Pesto, Fleisch mit Paprika-Tomatensauce. Sehr lecker. Ich ging früh schlafen, denn ich hatte von der Nacht in Cinqueterre wohl Bettwanzen-Stiche und alles juckte...
      Die letzten Fotos sind zwar am Morgen danach entstanden, zeigen aber das eigentliche Etappenziel, Altopascio vor dem Sonnenaufgang.      Les mer

      Painting Class- Day 2

      We used Palazzo Pfanner as a base today due to rain. Today’s lecture and demo focused on perspective and value. When it comes to watercolor painting, the drawing is everything. And the focus is on deciding where the lightest lights are in the painting so you can leave the paper white (or very pale!) I’m learning a lot but still in awe of Tom and some of the other students in the class.
      After class we joined 4 other students for dinner, which was fun.      Les mer
