      Ein Tag am Meer

      Nach dem beeindruckenden Erlebnis in Pompeji sind wir wieder Richtung Süden und Amalfiküste aufgebrochen. Bernie hat uns sicher durch die engen Strassen manövriert und wir haben einige Spots liegen lassen an denen man hätte anhalten können - wir waren auf der Suche nach einem Lokal auf dessen Parkplatz wir hätten vielleicht die Nacht verbringen können, aber irgendwie hatte alles geschlossen oder keinen Parkplatz, also sind wir die Strasse bis zum Ende gefahren und das hat sich mehr als gelohnt! Wir sind in Marina del Cantone gelandet, einem Sackgassendorf mit einem Kieselstrand in einer Bucht des Thyrrenischen Meeres. Wir haben den Sonnenaufgang genossen, in der Sonne gechillt und dann kam da ein junger Mann in einer Piaggio Ape (Bernie nennt es *Alberto*) den Berg heruntergefahren und sprach uns in deutsch an. Er ist ein Bauer und er hätte Olivenöl und Käse und Wurst zu verkaufen, also ist Bernie eingestiegen und mit ihm und seiner Ape zur Verkostung auf den Bauernhof oben auf dem Berg „geknattert“. Als die beiden wiederkamen hatten wir Wurst, Käse und Olivenöl und ein paar Flaschen Likör mehr im Auto 🤩. Nach dieser kleinen Begebenheit hat sich Bernie entschlossen, den 11.01.2023 als Anbadetag auszurufen und hat sich ins Meer begeben - ich habe mich nur mit den Füssen hineingewagt. Auch wenn das Wasser sicher wärmer ist als die Ostsee im Moment, ich trau mich da noch nicht rein. 🥶 So langsam hat sich Hunger breit gemacht und wir haben gesehen, dass die Restaurants öffnen also umgezogen und nix wie hin! Wir haben auf der Sonnenterasse gesessen und haben Feinstes aus Meer und von den Bergen gegessen. Am Ende waren wir so voll gefuttert, dass wir dringend Siesta halten mussten. Ganz entspannt und ruhig ist auch dieser Tag ausgeklungen und wir sind schon gespannt, wo es uns als nächstes *anspült*.Leggi altro

      Helikopterrundflug über den Vesuv!

      Ich kam ins Office um den Dienstplan einzusehen und wurde schon von meinen Kollegen mit den Worten begrüßt: "Du Arme hast morgen den einzigen Ausflug zum Übersetzen erwischt.... Aber es ist zugleich der mit Abstand geilste Ausflug!"

      Ja die Freude war kaum zu bändigen als ich auf den Dienstplan geschaut hatte und für den Helikopterrundflug über Capri, Vesuv, Herculaneum, Pompeji, Amalfi, Positano und Sorrent eingeteilt wurde. Laut Plan gab es 7 verfügbare Plätze und nur 5 davon wurden gebucht. Uiuiui dementsprechend sollte ich mitfliegen. Die Vorfreude war riesengroß!

      Die Enttäuschung dementsprechend jedoch auch als sich herausstellte, dass es sich um ein Missverständnis der Reiseagentur gehalten hat. Es gab zwar 7 freie Plätze, jedoch nur im Minivan zum Heli. Im Heli selbst waren lediglich 5 Plätze verfügbar. 😩😩😩
      Ich durfte also 1,5h mit den lieben Gästen im Minivan verbringen und fleißig übersetzen um dann von unten zu winken als sie mit dem Heli abgehoben waren. 🤬🤬🤬
      Aber hey, immerhin hab ich in der Zwischenzeit mit dem Fahrer und Guide eine Flasche landestypischen Limoncello und Meloncello geleert. 😁
      Es war gestern auch recht bewölkt, so dass der Schwenk über den Vesuv eh gestrichen wurde. 😈 Von daher hatte es vielleicht doch etwas Gutes. Meine Chefin weiß Bescheid und somit werde ich nochmal zu einem Heliausflug eingetragen um dann auch abheben zu können.

      Hier mal noch ein paar Eindrücke des Guides, der vergangene Woche bei strahlendem Sonnenschein mitfliegen durfte. Aber hey, die Sicht gestern war eh viiiieeeel zu schlecht. 😉 Da mach ich das doch lieber noch mal bei Sonnenschein.      Leggi altro

      Capri

      A summary of our day in Capri; fabulous, shit, fabulous.
      We went to the wharf in Sorrento at 8am for our 8.15am boat. 8.15 came and went, so did 8.30, 8.45. Finally we were collected for 9am boarding. The crew were all fussing around me getting on - "careful madam". Do I look like an idiot? They picked the wrong one. Graham sat on the side of the boat and then fell flat on his back on the deck, legs in the air. And that was our introduction to the 8 other people on board.
      Spent a few hours cruising around the island, visiting all the little grottos and seeing the line for the Blue Grotto. Stopped for a dip in one of the coves then headed for the island.
      Queued for an hour for the stupid little bus to jam us on board like sardines and deposit us at Anacapri. Queued for tickets to the chairlift. That bit was actually lovely. A great view over Capri. Ran around at the top to take a couple of photos then queued for the chairlift back down. As soon as we got off we bolted as we saw a big group heading in the direction of the bus stop. Beat them there as our bus pulled up, but it was full. Brett asked if they could please squeeze the four of us on, which they did. We stood on the stairs up against the doors, and luckily they didn't open.
      Power walked to our jetty as the boat arrived. And that is how you spend three hours on Capri. You haven't lived until you have been jammed onto one of their stupid little buses.
      Stopped on the way back for a swim or limoncello. Who would like to guess what I chose?

      TGV, Pompeii (WOW), Sorrento and pizza

      Leaving Rome bright and early, we caught the TGV to Naples (1 hour 15 min), and then were driven to Pompeii. Had a two hour tour with Maria, and all the cannibals (her description of the locals who were out and about because it’s Liberation Day). This was a wow for me. Such advanced infrastructure-pipes (albeit lead), and organization. Ended up in Sorrento at a stunning hotel with colourful tiles everywhere - this is the Land of colours (and citrus fruit).       Sorrento Swim

      Just wow! I hopped on the bus back to Sorrento and found this spot on the peninsula to swim!! And it's gorgeous 😍 the water was turquoise and the almost pool thing surrounded by cliffs was amazing. Definitely the highlight of my day 🤗🤗Leggi altro

      Sorrento and driving the Amalfi coast

      We met our driver Francesco and guide Rosa outside the hotel at 8:30 AM to drive from Sorrento to Positano, Amalfi, and ending up at Ravello. This drive from start to finish should have taken about two hours. Keep in mind, this is actually the start of busy season so it’s still relatively quiet. We got to Positano in normal time, and it’s super cute but just loaded with tourist shops and tourists. We did touch the Mediterranean so that’s a first. And we hopped back in the car to drive to Amalfi, which instead of taking 20 minutes, took 2 1/2 hours for no good reason. So we skipped getting out in Amalfi and drove on to Ravello, where we had some tickets to see a villa and we had lunch. Lunch and Lemoncello spritz were likely the highlight of the trip because lunch was lemon ravioli. YUM. The trip Back was through the mountains as we opted to not return to Amalfi. The one and a half hour drive then took 2 1/2 hours for no good reason. We rolled into Sorrento and our hotel at about 7:30 PM. Reservations at Baigni Delfino at 830 originally seems way too late but the timing worked perfectly. This meal was possibly the best so far !Leggi altro

      Enge Gassen 😳 & Zitronen

      Wir starten Richtung Salerno, das Navi würde uns drum herum schicken, aber ich will die Durchfahrt probieren. 🫣 schlechte Wahl: viel Verkehr, und kaum etwas zu sehen. Es bestätigt sich wieder, dass Italiens Verkehrsteilnehmer zu 90% aus potentiellen Mördern und Selbstmördern bestehen. 🙄

      Gabi möchte unbedingt nach Vietri sul Mare. Porzellanhauptstadt von Süditalien. Und tatsächlich, nachdem uns Gabi durch viel zu enge Gassen auf den viel zu kleinen Parkplatz gelotst hat, finden wir eine wunderschöne Altstadt mit unzähligen kleinen Porzellanläden vor, die die schwierige Anfahrt wieder wettmachen. Nach den Souvenireinkäufen machen wir es uns im Hafen noch bei einer Pizza gemütlich.

      An der Amalfiküste gibts ein generelles Fahrverbot für Wohnmobile, weshalb wir unseren heutigen Campingplatz bei Sorrent über die andere Seite anfahren müssen. Die Einfahrt in den Platz erfordert wieder Millimeterarbeit, und bringt ein paar neue graue Haare. 😱

      Nach dem obligatorischen Begrüßungsbier gehts in die Altstadt. Dort stellen wir fest, dass es unglaublich ist, wieviele kleine Shops in so wenige kleine enge Gässchen passen. 😀 Geschäft reiht sich an Geschäft. Zitronen sind das vorherrschende Motiv. Egal ob beim auch hier vorkommenden Porzellan, bei den Seifen, beim Limoncello oder den Kleidern und T-shirts. Auch Schürzen oder Geschirrtücher mit Zitronenmotiven gibt es.

      Wir kaufen natürlich wieder Souvenirs ein. Schön langsam müssen wir das Gewicht im Auge behalten. Der Camper hat ein höchst zulässiges Gesamtgewicht von 3.500 kg. 😆

      Im Restaurant danach, sind auch die Gnocci sowie der Fisch mit Zitronen verfeinert. 😋      Leggi altro

      Greek mythology is a lot of fun. Did you know? There is a god of thunder and lightning? His name is Zeus. He is the king of the gods. There are others too, including Hera, Athena etc.. All gods and goddesses have unique powers. Did you know? A child born from a god and a mortal is known as a Demigod. Heracles, (the most powerful Greek that ever lived), was a demigod.       Sorrento here we come

      We were up bright and early for our driver to take us to Rome Termini, and then the driver cancelled. Dragged our cases to the taxi rank - no taxis. Public holiday, streets were blocked. A bit of a stressful start but made it to the train with heaps of time. Graham dropped a full Yeti on his head from the overhead storage. He had a big dent on his head and we all laughed.
      Our driver to Sorrento made us laugh. Everything in Sorrento is the best in Italy - best church, best lemons, best pasta, and on and on.
      Bought our first bottle of Limoncello on the way to our accommodation. We are right in the middle of the action on the main street; great location.
      Had a fantastic dinner and lots of limoncello spritz, followed by gelato then more limoncello.
      Went to the chemist and there is a whole section with gluten free products.
      Graham lobbed himself in the middle of the instagrammers to get his shot. The results speak for themselves.

      "R" Day

      We are enjoying a lazy, rainy day in Sorrento, Italy. We had planned to hike the Path of the Gods on the Amalfi coast (thank for the tip Sparkeses!), but alas, ‘the Gods’ did not condone our endeavors. So, we spent a chill day walking around town looking for pencils (unsuccessfully), Italian Pokémon cards (unsuccessfully), stationery beyond postcards (unsuccessfully), and groceries (successfully!). We had our first homecooked lunch of zucchini omelets with parmesan, tuna and chips, carrots, olives and left-over spaghetti pomodoro.

      Now this might sound mundane to many of you, but I had never cooked popcorn anywhere but in a microwave or an air popper. I was so excited to make two batches of wok-cooked popcorn with olive oil on the stove for us to enjoy while watching Sea Beast (a newish Netflix picture with the weirdest combination of accents and nationalities...is it just me parents?). For those of you who know me well, I can get unusually excited about a seemingly mundane thing and it was so thoughtful for Lewis to share in my extended excitement as Andrew and Rob began to roll their eyes. Thank you Lewis! Xoxo

      We also squeezed in some math, Lewis wrote some post cards (writing ✅) and Andrew read about Pompeii (where we are heading tomorrow). The skies cleared by late afternoon and we spent a few hours in the pool before finding our new favorite dinner spot: Le Grazie (after being rejected from another place (Il Pozzo – boycott it!) because we didn’t wait 10 “Italian” minutes on the curb, even though the maître d’ agreed that we could walk around and return within 10 “American” minutes…no, I’m not bitter!) and our new favorite gelato shop: Amorino Al Naturale, which has ‘natural’ ingredients and the most amazing gelato macarons.

      Off to Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius tomorrow - here's hoping the next post or two will be by someone other than me ;)      Leggi altro
