      Caio da Positano!

      May 22, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After Pompei we are making our way down the Amalfi coast. Today we passed through Sorrento on our way to the cliff side town of Positano. In Sorrento they have a cute fiat car parade that lasted over 5 minutes as the entire town patiently waited in traffic. We are staying in Nocelle the town directly above. Tomorrow we check out Positano below and head to a hidden beach only accessible by boat. Pictures are from the start of our journey in Sorrento up to Positano, and our B&B balcany as well. We were pleasantly greater by our host Giuseppe and his two cute dogs Gene and Olgi which will undoubtedly join us for breakfast under our table in the morning :) 😀Read more

      Every morning...

      May 24, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Every morning, at roughly 7am, our BnB was graced by the morning livestock moving through town on hi greener pastures.

We became aware of the distinctive chiming of bells that meant we could take notice of we were on the stairs (more on this later). We also noticed this part of town (Nocelle) had a certain aroma to it. We found out the following morning where it was coming from.Read more

      Positano and Beyond

      May 4, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 59 °F

We began the day by driving down the Amalfi coast. I had no idea of the spectacular scenery we would find. Towering mountains fall right down into the sea. The coastal road hugs a tiny ledge that often rises 2000 feet above the water of the Mediterranean Sea. Massive cliffs rise vertically out of the ocean to a crest another thousand feet above us. The coastline here is even more magnificent than the California road traveling from Carmel down to Big Sur. We stopped in Positano at a wonderful family restaurant called Constantino’s. Our five course meal started with a Caprese salad, continued with a pizza course. This was followed by a pasta course consisting of cannoli, tagliatelle, manicotti and a wonderful cheese filled crêpe. The meal ended with lemoncello cake followed by a small shot of the beverage itself.

The scenery became even more magnificent as we swung back-and-forth on switchbacks. We went into higher mountains with terraces for growing white grapes, lemons, olives, and a host of other agricultural products. The terrain looked as though a giant accordion has been thrown down the mountainside. Each new turn revealed another mountain with hundreds of terraces going up the side. Each terrace was supported by a thick retaining wall made of huge stone blocks. Each of these blocks had to be hauled up the mountain side, usually by donkeys. It must have taken an unbelievable amount of work over centuries to haul all of the stone necessary to build those retaining walls. The terrain is so steep that even today stonemasons in brickmasons use donkeys to carry their loads to the worksite. We took time to visit a resort that our travel agents wanted to investigate. It is the opulent San Pietro resort near Positano. Rates here start at €3000 per night. We also saw the lovely town of Ravolo that hosts a classical music festival every June.

At the far point of our trek we were delighted with the sites from the Villa Rufolo, an estate begun as a castle in the 13th century, modified by the Saracens around 1500, and completely renovated in the 19th century. The estate belonged to a cousin of the pope, a nobleman who essentially ruled the Amalfi coast. This building originally reflected an unusual balance between Norman, medieval, and Saracen styles. However, the major renovation in the 19th century incorporated some romantic fantasies which upset that balance. Nevertheless, the house and watchtower are interesting, and the gardens are stunningly beautiful in their springtime colors.

We returned to our hotel after a long day, said good-night to a bejeweled Vesuvius and dropped into bed.

      Positano

      October 11, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Read more

A heard of goats... and one sheep.

      May 24, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

See the link to our Youtube video at the end of this post for our encounter with the goats.

Emily and David were walking on the Path of the Gods and we came across some old stone walls. As we walked up the stairs to the stone walls, we saw that previous hikers had left hundreds of petroglyphs in this area.

That alone would have been memorable, but within a few minutes we started hearing the distinctive sound of bells in the distance. We figured staying up on the wall and letting the goats pass us on the trail below was the right move. However, what happened next surprised us.

The goats did not use the trail, in fact they were above us walking to the back of the highest wall. Everything ended well, but we were a little unsure how this was going to unravel at the time.

      In love with Positano

      May 30, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

      Dinnerspot: Il Capitano

      Amalfi Coast

      August 27, 2019 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After our lazy day yesterday we were up early and back on the local train back to Naples to meet up with our tour bus that would take us along the Amalfi Coast. They call the road Mama Mia, as it is skinny and windy and when you watch the way the buses navigate the tight corners and windy road.

The scenery was amazing and our first stop was Positano which is a beautiful village with it’s narrow winding paths down to the beach. Shame we only got an hour here, but we would love to come back and explore the coast. Pete couldn’t resist a swim in the Mediterranean. Then it was back on the bus and off to Amalfi where we hopped on a boat and cruised the coast checking out the beaches and the celebrity houses along the coast. We found a boat that looks like the one we should have! Haha!

We then had lunch at a restaurant on the beach and had yum seafood Spaghetti and a new drink, a lemon spritz using limoncello, Prosecco, soda and limone gelati, very yum and refreshing.

Our last stop was Revalla (not how you spell it) where there was fantastic views of the coastline and some wonderful ceramic showrooms. Pete nearly had a table shipped home!

I took a travel sickness tablet (due to windy roads) and so I slept all the way back to Naples. A great taste of the Amalfi Coast and definitely a place we would like to go back to.

When we got back to the apartment we cooled off in the tiny pool in the garden of our BnB and made another platter that we ate overlooking the garden. We went upstairs to the terrace and watched the sunset. A great end to a wonderful day, our last night in Italy! Off to Greece tomorrow.
