    A surprise visit.

    September 8, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

On 7th September we were pleasantly surprised to be told the Mellers were driving down and would arrive tomorrow (Friday) and attend the fish'n'chip night.

An agenda that included some tourism and some work was devised.

Despite the inclement weather, the fish'n'chip night was quite busy. To top it off, Janette won the raffle for a $50 voucher to the Tatong Tavern.

On Saturday morning we drove down to the Violet Town market and had a browse before having lunch at Tallis winery, Dookie. This is the best time of year to enjoy the Canola blossoms and the winery is on a high vantage point.

The return drive to Benalla was through part of the Silo Art Trail - Devenish and Goorambat. Then, dinner at the Tatong Tavern.

Sunday was a work day. We started to cut down the huge fig tree at the old dairy.

Back to being tourists on Monday. First up Milawa and a visit to the cheese factory with a tasting of twelve cheeses - most informative. After buying some cheese, we popped next door to the bakery and bought some bread. The Wattle Tree gift shop in the same complex was the next call.

A tasting at the mustard shop was very interesting and informative. The mustard shop is now located in the old butchery. A browse around the Olive Shop and a tasting at Brown Bros Winery completed our look at Milawa.

Lunch at the King River Cafe in Oxley was most enjoyable (as always).

A drive along the King River Road took us to Lake William Hovell. It was then a short drive back to Chrismont Wines for a coffee and to enjoy the views.

Once home, Trish suggested we should check the cows. Just as well she did. One of the first calvers, 2109, had started to calve but was evidently not progressing. I called for Janette to come over and bring the spotlight as daylight was quickly fading.

We got 2109 into the crush and managed to pull the calf. We don't think she would have calved unassisted.

    A big day!

    Ten tenors in Canberra

    July 14, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

The Ten Tenors being in Canberra for a concert was a good excuse for a weekend away. The fact that there was a Saturday matinee performance made it even more appealing.
We arranged to meet at the Canberra Arboretum for lunch, so, 7 am start and, as usual, breakfast in Holbrook.

Met at 12.30 at the Arboretum, booked into the Ginger Restaurant, and settled back for a leisurely lunch.

“The National Arboretum Canberra combines a living collection of forests with an entertainment and events centre offering unique experiences. It is one of the world’s largest living collections of rare, endangered and significant trees; surrounding visitors with spectacular views, stunning architecture and the natural beauty of trees and gardens. Over 44,000 trees from around the world and Australia are growing across 250 hectares (618 acres) of rolling hills.
Nestled into the landscape, the award-winning Village Centre is at the heart of the Arboretum. Visitors can enjoy a free guided tour of the Village Centre and marvel at the miniature living artworks in the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection. Relax and refresh at the Café at the Arboretum, Ginger at the Arboretum Restaurant and The Curatoreum gift shop. Discover the forests and lookouts, great picnic spots, outdoor sculptures, walking and cycling trails and the unique nature-themed Pod Playground where children explore giant acorn cubby houses and banksia pods.
With over 44,000 rare and endangered trees across a 250-hectare site, the Arboretum is a place of beauty, conservation, science research, education, tourism and recreation”.

After checking into our accommodation, Quest Canberra, we headed down City Walk with a view to find somewhere to eat. Not far along we spotted a Vietnamese restaurant. A bottle of wine from the wine shop next door, and we enjoyed a nice meal.

Saturday morning we headed to the National Portrait Gallery. First though was breakfast in the Gallery cafe before having a good look around.

    Next stop was Canberra Glassworks:-
“Canberra Glassworks provides artists with state-of-the-art equipment; intensive workshops taught by leading glass artists; studios and residency programs; and a unique context to explore, develop and realise new work.
Canberra Glassworks also provides diverse opportunities for visitors to interact with and learn about glass making and the heritage of Canberra’s Kingston Power House. Visitors can meet artists, see glassmaking as it happens, view exhibitions, take tours and have a hands-on experience working with glass”

After a look around, we stopped at a gallery above the work area to watch a student being taught glassblowing. Perhaps something to try next time?

The Ten Tenors show was starting at 2pm. We decided it would be best to head back to our digs, park the car, freshen up and then have a light lunch near the theatre.

Not much to say about the show other than it was every bit as good as expected and more.

Walking back after the show, we passed the mall which had been turned into a winter play area with ice skating and children's sledging.

Dinner at the Banana Leaf was good - as it was last visit.

Paul had heard about a world champion barista who has a coffee shop in Canberra. Mr Google knew exactly where to find him, of course. It was decided we would have Sunday morning breakfast there before heading for home.

The food was delicious but the coffee was a tad too fancy for our tastes…

    Pampered at Pizzinis.

    June 30, 2023 in Australia

Our 2022 Christmas present from the Coles was the 'Overnight Food and Wine Escape' at Pizzini Wines. It comprised a tutored wine tasting, lunch platters, dinner and accommodation. It was a most enjoyable weekend.

Below is the review I wrote on trip adviser.

    A true gourmet experience.
    Jun. 2023 • Couples
Our daughter bought us the 'overnight food and wine escape'. We stayed Friday 30th June. Our private tutored wine tasting was booked for midday. On arrival we were greeted with “prepare to be pampered”, and boy were we pampered!
We were taken on a marvellous tasting journey through the Pizzini wine portfolio for over an hour followed by two platters - one cheese, one meat - accompanied by a glass of wine of our choice.
Our accommodation was at the Mountain View Hotel in Whitfield - a very comfortable king room. Dinner was in the hotel dining room.
Just when we thought things couldn't get any better, they did!
We experienced as good a meal as we've ever had - four courses with matched wines. None of our food courses were on the menu - they were prepared especially for us and they were all exquisite.
Each course and wine were presented and explained most professionally. Our young waitress, Jemma, was knowledgable beyond her years about the wines and was obviously very passionate about her role. She explained that Pizzinis provide lots of training - it shows.
Breakfast was continental, supplied in the room.
    A most enjoyable experience!
If you want to buy someone a very special present, you won't do better than this.

    A weekend at the snow.

    June 26, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 6 °C

Hugo was due to go to Jindabyne to spend term three at Snowy Mountains Grammar School. He and Candice were up at Buller and would drive to Jindabyne from there.

We decided that it would be nice to weekend with them at Buller and wish him well.

We left the car in Mansfield and took the bus up the mountain.
