      Senso-ji and an umbrella sea.

      10 November 2023, Jepang ⋅ 🌧 18 °C

Today, after leaving my Hotel, I had to figure out how to get a 72h subway ticket. It was a bit more complicated than I thought because I needed my passport to be eligible for buying, which I left in my room. The 72h pass is only offered to tourists, everyone else has to buy 24h tickets priced at 900yen instead of 1500yen for 72h. After grabbing my Passport, I thought I could just as well get a Pasmo Passport IC Card, at no extra cost and use that instead of a paper ticket. Finally, I used the subway to go to Asakusa Station, where Asakusa Shrine, also known as Senso-ji was located. Senso-ji is a shrine to Kannon, goddess of Mercy and it's the most important Kannon Shrine In Japan. Main feature are gigantic lanterns at the gates and the main shrine. Leading up to the Shrine was a long festive street with lots of shops selling trinkets and snacks. It was rainy most of the day, but also quite warm, Last Tuesday, Japan actually had the warmest day of any November since they started recording the weather. The rest of the day I had a first look at Akihabara, I'll definitely go again this Sunday because they will block the streets for traffic and you can walk around more freely. It's definitely heaven and hell for a fan of everything game and anime related.

      Google Translate:

      Erster richtiger Tag in Tokio

      14 Maret, Jepang ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

      Day tour of Tokyo

      1 April, Jepang ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

We took a bus tour around Tokyo today. We were picked up about a 15 minute walk from our hotel at 8:00. The first stop was the Nijubashi Bridge to the Emperor of Japan's Palace. The palace grounds are only open to the public twice a year. Nice area, and it is 5km around the property surrounded by a moat. Next was the Asakusa Temple, which is the oldest in Tokyo, neat seeing people dressed in old style Kimono dresses in the area. Mostly toursist wearing these and you can rent them for the day. We went to a Macha tea ceremony as well. The next stop was the Yokohama Bayside area and Yamashita Park. Here, there is a replica of the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty first appeared in Tokyo in 1998, borrowed from France as part of a one year celebration commemorating Japan's relationship with France. Later, because the statue was quite popular, France decided to make a copy to give to Japan, showing goodwill in bilateral relations between the two countries. In the same area, we saw the Fuji TV building, the Giant Transformer Robot Gundam, and the tulips garden. We had a great buffet lunch at Hilton Hotel. Afterward, we took a short cruise to tour the Tokyo Bay, and then the final stop was the Tokyo Tower. The tour bus dropped us off at the Tokyo station at around 5:30 = RUSH HOUR lol! Fighting the crowds and figuring out train routes back to Shinjuku was a challenge, but we made it. Back at the hotel, having a glass of wine and going to try the hotel restaurant as it is raining again.Baca selengkapnya

      Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo, Japan

      5 Mei, Jepang ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Huge temple in Tokyo, this was massively busy! Very much a tourist area as we walked down a street of shops before the entrance. Everything was huge about the place - huge amount of lanterns, huge lanterns themselves, plus a huge pair of sandals hanging on the walls!Baca selengkapnya

      Dag 1 @ Asakusa/Akihabara/Shinjuku

      17 Oktober 2023, Jepang ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      Rise and shine ☀️🈲

Tokyo is amazing 🗼🇯🇵

      Tokyo

      24 Maret, Jepang ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

      Asakusa and Yanaka

      8 September 2019, Jepang ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

After discovering some of 'new' Tokyo we decided to see older, more traditional parts.
In the morning we took a train to Asakusa where we straight away found old fashioned streets and much smaller buildings than the skyscrapers we were surrounded by the day before. The oldest and one of the most significant temples in Tokyo, Senso Ji, can also be found here which is known for its big red lanterns. While we were there we met a Japanese man who spoke a bit of Hungarian and had fried mashed potato sandwiches. In a little shop we bought a postcard with an old painting of the temple and we also bought some souvenir chopsticks from a 100 yen shop which had lots of beautiful bowls and other Japanese cooking stuff.
Later we walked over to Yanaka, another famously traditional qurater full of temples and shrines. On the way there we saw an amazing drum performance in the street. After a picnic in a Japanese garden style park with some real cheap streetfood (as lack of English signs we accidently but happily ended up with more fried mashed potato), we visited Nezu Shrine. Here there is a long tunnel of red gates which were great for taking photos.
We headed home not too late with aching feet ready for a rest and to get safely inside before the typhoon arrived!...

      Senso-ji Temple

      13 November 2019, Jepang ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

      Wow.

I had no idea it was so huge!! Senso-ji is so amazing. I just can't stop fan girling about it haha :)
It is such a special place, one that made me constantly stop in awe.

Normally I get easily bothered, irritated, etc. by other people when exploring sites, especially when trying to take photos but I don't recall feeling that once. It was such an amazing place and I was so happy to be exploring it!

I noticed not a lot of people were following the customs for when visiting a shrine. People followed the purifying all fine and dandy but unless it was a 日本人, then people completely disregarded things like bowing before entering the gates of the shrine, keeping to the side of the pavement as you approcach the shrine, etc.
That made me a little a sad and confused but I did my best to follow the customs and show my respect and appreciation. I hope it becomes more common for others to do so too.

The buildings were so tall,
It was impressive and had me in a constant state of wonder. I love Senso-ji temple so much and I feel like I could spend a whole day there! Madeleine said that it's really amazing to visit at night - there's less people, the place is lit up and the shops close their doors, revealing numerous traditional Japanese art. It all sounds amazing and I can't wait to visit there again and see that 😻

The grounds were so big and because they linked up to souvenir shops and a shopping alley, it was easy to get confused with where you were. But I loved every bit of it and scored myself some lovely items. They had one of those ball machines that you put money in and then turn to get a toy in a ball out. I saw that you could get an otter and I got it on the first go! I was so happy and blessed and I can't wait to give it to Lachlan :D

I'm so happy I got to visit Senso-ji and the memories of it are so special to me too.
