Day 1 - On The Road Finally

    January 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 46 °F

I finally hit the road at 10:30 am. It started raining lightly after a couple of hours. I got to my original stopping location, a campground near Eugene OR about 4pm. But since it was so cold and rainy, I decided it was not worth spending $35 just to sleep in the van. So I drove on a bit to a rest-stop.

I was surprised to see that the light on my power outlet was on. Sure enough it seems my battery recharged on the long drive and I had power. Yeah!!!!

It was cold and I had to get out my sleeping bag. Once I settled in I was warm enough and managed to sleep.

  • Bomb Cycle BOMBOGENESIS

    January 4, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 36 °F

Day 2 did not go so well. It started out okay. I got a good nights sleep and although it was rainy and chilly the roads were good and I was enjoying a new audiobook, Carry On by Lisa Fenn.

First though I listened to the news and realized I would need to keep an eye on the weather reports. When I passed some flashing lights with a warning to listen to weather warnings on AM radio, I turned the radio on. It didn't sound good. I stopped at a gas station and as I pulled up it started snowing. And the wind was so strong it was unbearable. I sat for a few minutes and then decided I needed to find a safe warm place for the night. There was a motel just around the corner so here I am.......
In Weed California, watching the news and wondering if I should head back to Seattle. The news looks pretty grim.
Maybe California will fall into the ocean sooner than expected.

The reports are calling it a Bombagenesis. WTF!

I'll make a decision in the morning.

  • Through the Storm

    January 5, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 45 °F

California did not fall into the ocean last night and this morning was warmer. Still rainy but not nearly as bad as yesterday afternoon. I decided I could drive on. The sun broke through in the afternoon. I decided to stop about 6:30. Comfort Inns and Motel 6 are pet friendly. Motel 6 is very basic, no microwave or coffee maker. But it is clean and has a laundry facility. This morning I noticed that some water had managed to get in the van last night. My sleeping bag and bedding was a bit wet. So I would need to get them dried out before I could sleep in vanette again. Tomorrow morning I will wash & dry everything and then head to Joshua Tree. That's my plan.Read more

  • A Beautiful Day

    January 6, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Today the sun was shining. I was able to dry my bedding g in the hotel laundromat before hitting the road. I made time to Joshua Tree just after 5 pm. The full moon wax coming up but it was still pretty dark. I went to Walmart to get a few things and am sleeping in their parking lot. Will explore Joshua Tree NP tomorrow.

It was actually relatively warm today. Even got up to 65. But it is pretty cold tonight. Hopefully I'll get a good night's sleep.

  • Phoenix

    January 12, 2023 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 68 °F

On Tuesday Jan's electrical system blew a fuse. She had to come back to Phoenix and have the guys who installed it fix it and put a breaker in too so it could be reset. I stopped at the RTR first and ended up staying for the Safety session and then the weather app session. It was actually the best session they've had. But I too headed to Phoenix. I was desperate for a shower and the rest of the RTR sessions didn't look all that interesting. I thought about going back this weekend just to see what the all gender RTR is like but I think I'd rather hang out with Bev. And have some down time before heading to Austin.

I spent all day today reorganizing so I could put stuff in the rooftop carrier. Some of the stuff that was in it got wet during the storm in CA. Someday I will have everything organized perfectly.......

  • Day 7 in Phoenix

    January 19, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

I've had a great time visiting with Bev for a week. We've of course done a bunch of shopping. I'm going to need a budget category called 'Shopping with Bev'. But we always find such great stuff and have a good time. We also ate at my favorite restaurants, White Chocolate & the Persian Room.

And I spent a bunch of time working on a travel book of our trip to Peru. It really helps to second pair of eyes.

So my plan was to leave today and take a leisurely 3 days to make it. I was going to stop near Tucson at a couple of places Bob told me about:
The Titan Missile Silo & Museum and the White Dove cathedral. BUT..... Instead I am sitting in an urgent care center with Bev as she fell off her horse and although we don't think she broke anything she is having trouble walking and I'd rather her get an exam & professional opinion. And have a plan before I leave.

This is not a good omen for 2023. Last year I spent quite a few hours at urgent care centers. I think I took Jeannie once, I know I took Wendy in Galveston after she fell and then I went twice: once for a dog bite and once for a broken ankle. I wonder if it is just something to expect with aging, although none of the issues were age related.

  • On my way to Austin

    January 19, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Finally on my way to Austin. I think it was 1:30 or 2 when I left PHX. I decided to at least drive by the 'White Dove' mission which is actually named St. Francis de Xavier Catholic Church. It's an old mission. I arrived at 4:10pm. It closed at 4. But I did stop and walk around the outside and snap a few photos. It wasn't nearly as large as it looked on the internet. I might stop another time to see the inside......if I decide I need to see some missions.Read more

  • Indian Bread Rocks Happy Campground

    January 19, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 39 °F

It was late and dark by the time I got to the exit for Indian Bread Rocks Recreation Area. I figured it would be nicer than a truck stop or rest area. I was a little apprehensive as I was driving further and further down an unpaved road. And there were no cars and no lights or anything.....but the road was actually one of the nicest, well maintained unpaved roads I've been on. Turns out it is actually a BLM camping area and it seemed like I was the only one there. It was late and cold so I warmed up my dinner and settled in for the night. It was so so quiet and dark. I did hear & see one camper pull in about 11:30.

It was a really cold night at least for me. I doubt it got below freezing but I stayed in my bed until the sun was up and it got a bit warmer.

And then I got out and took a few photos. There was a large area with picnic tables, grills & fire pits and even a pit toilet. There were lots of areas to pull off and set up camp and quite a few RVs around. It was a lovely spot and I could definitely see spending a few days there.

  • Just Another Rest Stop

    January 21, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

Slept last night at a rest stop right off Hwy 10. The exact opposite of the previous night. Lots of road noise etc but a little melatonin and I can sleep through almost anything. Tonight I am just west of Johnson City Tx. I could have driven another hour and a half but I was hungry and tired of driving. And I found a really nice rest area so I am happily settling in for the night.Read more

  • Almost ready

    February 27, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Yesterday I painted the master bathroom to match the rest : Cathedral Gray. I do really like the look of the gray. Also did some more weeding and cleaning out garden beds. My right arm is so so sore. I can barely raise it above my head. It reminds me of the time David tried to teach me how to shoot baskets. Several days later at work I found I could not raise my arm to hang up an I V bag. It took me awhile to figure out why!

I have one more thing to paint: the trim around the front door. That shouldn't take too long. Then I just have to do some final clean up.

I was going to grab a breakfast taco at Camino Reale around the corner but decided to sit down and have one of their veggie omelettes. It's the only place I know that uses fresh mushrooms and spinach for their omelettes and enchiladas. I don't come often but I'm going to miss them. They also have decent coffee for a Mexican restaurant.

  • Now For The Paperwork

    February 28, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

So now I have a bunch of red tape & paperwork to do. Selling a house is almost more complicated than buying one. There's all kinds of disclosure statements and stuff to complete & get notorized.

I had planned on taking a walk in the neighborhood and taking some photos but time got away from me. I really wanted some good shots of the tree limbs entangled with the electrical wires. The next power outage just waiting to happen. As it was getting dark, the photos don't do it justice. I'll try again on Saturday.Read more

  • It's on the Market

    March 4, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Shabana listed my house Thursday night and by Friday morning it was being 'viewed'. Today and tomorrow she is holding an Open House. Then we will see......

Okay so it is now March 12 and I never finished or posted this. There's lots to catch up on...Read more
