SICILY/UK/FRANCE 2023

  • Beaujolais & Lyon food tour

    12 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

This morning we set off after breakfast on our way to Beaujolais which is the wine area. Once again it will was very green and lush everywhere. We saw various pretty villages and actually stopped at a town called boujais which had a little market a gorgeous church and a very pretty central area. Eventually we got to a winery set in a beautiful castle like Maison. We had expert explanations of the white and red wines which tended to be mainly gammays. It is also a wedding venue. This town was very excited because the Tour de France goes through tomorrow. Overall a very pleasant morning. Czytaj więcej

  • Lyon Gourmet tour

    12 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We managed a very quick lunch turnaround and then set out again on foot for the gourmet food tour of Lyon. Our guide called Megan was very good and we enjoyed expert information about wonderful good. First of all we went to a chocolatier and the ganache was to die for. Secondly, we went for amazing cheese and learned all about the MON awards which are given out to masters of whatever area they specialise in for example making cheese. These awards are harder to get than Michelin stars and people have to be the best of the best in their career. Next was a visit to Biscuitire Mercredi where we had yummy cookies including ones which is the same recipe as the Greeks introduced a very long time ago. Finally the charcuterie had brilliant meats and we enjoyed this and the wine very much. Clearly too much food today so I couldn’t really handle dinner but it was a good day. Czytaj więcej

  • Last morning in Lyon

    13 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We decided to take it a bit easier this morning so after breakfast we walked into the Ilse of lyon to see things we wanted to see. The Hotel Grande Dieu was quite magnificent. It used to be a Hospital and goes for miles. We then walked round generally wanting to change money, have a look at the pretty streets, have a coffee and find the basilica Saint Martin D’Anais. it was quite a moreish great looking church but unfortunately we could not enter it. I’ll have to save it for next time??? Czytaj więcej

  • Perouges & down to Vienne

    13 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

After lunch we took the extra excursion driving up to Perouges, which is a lovely hilltop mediaeval town north east of Lyon. It didn’t take long to get there and we saw sunflowers on the way. This town is fortified, completely cobblestoned and a very pretty village. It is one of the most authentic ones we have been to. Our tour guide was very informative and we learnt a lot about its history and current day residents which number under 100. It was lovely hour or so and now we are on the bus which is driving us down to Vienne to meet the boat which is taking its first journey without us. Not only is tomorrow a public holiday for Bastille day but it is also school holidays so we are expecting delays. Czytaj więcej

  • Vienne morning

    14 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

This morning after a slower start and breakfast we set out on a walk with a guide around the town of Vienne. Today is bastille day and it is a public holiday so it was reasonably quiet but we managed to walk around this circular town to find the archaeological Roman ruins. In particular the temple of Augustus and Livia was the best. Eventually we made our way back to the Saint Maurice Cathedral and whilst it was huge it was only on the ‘okay’ list for us compared to all the other ones we have seen. We chose to walk on our own for a while, had a quick coffee and then we managed to hear the town band and watch the official ceremonies. . Certainly the red white and blue looks great. ♥️💙🤍 Czytaj więcej

  • Tournon evening

    14 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ 🌙 26 °C

After a good rest and recreation this afternoon we were welcome to cocktails hosted by the captain and then had a lovely dinner of coq au vin and creme brûlé. After dinner we had fun doing the music quiz which included singing and dancing and our team won - we had 100% score yay. Craig and I even won the twist dancing competition. All those Italian weddings paid off. As it is Bastille day we also had a wonderful fireworks show along with all the locals of Tournon. Our view from the top of the boat was really good. What a wonderful day. Czytaj więcej

  • Morning Steam Train in Tournon

    15 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

This morning we had a quick walk around the main square in Tournon seeing the castle carved into the rock and another church. The eyedrops we bought at the pharmacy only cost 14 .5 euros!!! The steam train through the Ardeche was very pretty and very sooty. We are both still shaking black stuff out of our hair. Very pleasant way to spend a morning. Czytaj więcej

  • Evening walk in Viviere

    15 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

After a lovely dinner this evening we then took a late night walk with a guide into Viviere. Our Vietnamese guide was particularly intelligent and really informative. It was good to go into another authentic town really off the tourist road.
Additionally it was really interesting doing it at night time specially when they put the lights on. This town is quite abandoned because people are not allowed to make any changes to it. It has a lot of history and even though we didn’t spend a cent it felt good to support it in someway. Good on Viking for having this on their itinerary.

  • Early morning look at Arles

    16 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

This morning we woke up early as usual and it was lovely outside with the sun shining and very pretty as we docked into Arles. We have been here before in 2014 but wanted a quick look because today we have opted for the full day tour taking us down to the Camargue so it will be a nature day today. It was very quiet but we did manage to find the amphitheatre and the arena and walk through some very pretty streets before getting back quickly to our Delling boat. Czytaj więcej

  • Carmague Trip & animal experiences

    16 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

This morning we left by bus for our shore excursion down to the Carmague Parc. The main focus was to see pink flamingoes and we were not disappointed. There were MANY of them in the bird sanctuary along with egrets, herons, and more. This sanctuary is now cared for by the grandsons of the man who started it. Lovely bird hide areas dotted the park and it is great that so many birds here fly from far away to get food safely - so the idea is working!
Next, we drove down to the town of Saintes Maries de la Mer. Finally, we saw the beaches in France!! Today was the "Fete de Chevaux" and as this is the area with the small white horses. For centuries, these small horses have lived wild in the harsh environment of the Camargue marshes and wetlands of the Rhône delta. Here they developed stamina, hardiness, and agility apparently. The town was full of local visitors and there was a good horsemanship and horsewomanship show on display with various tricks done by good-looking horses with good-looking, well-dressed riders. The Cathedral was pretty good but it had relics based on two 'Marys' whose remains are in the church. As a Catholic who believes a lot, some of this stuff was a bit more legend than believable! By now it was getting pretty warm.
Next, we went to the 'Manade de Layalle' which was a farm property. We were put on the back of a tractor to visit the bulls which are grown for their various Bull sports. It did sound like no harm was made to the bulls and the owner of the Agriturisme Farm did seem like a nice guy (Mathieu). The best part was the wonderful lunch they served us which included yummy tapenade, cheese and cheese pie, rather salty oxtail stew, and a good apple pie. We actually enjoyed it and learned a lot. Finally, the somewhat boring guide offered to take us into Arles but the heat and the fact that we have been there before (and this morning) - we chose to go back to cool down and rehydrate. It was a hot but good day.

  • On y va Paris

    17 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Last night we had a lovely final dinner and this morning a nice final breakfast . There was a lot of waiting around but our taxi got us to the Avignon Gare and now we are on the TGV train to Paris. The trip was very quick and easy the only difficulty was getting our bags up and down the stairs. Gare di lyon was very busy and we had to wait for ages for a taxi but our hotel in San Germain is very nice and we had a lovely lunch nearby and went for a pleasant walk. Paris is exciting to be in again❤️❤️🇫🇷 Czytaj więcej

  • Paris 1

    18 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Our hotel is great and we have had a couple of walks round our local area which is full of restaurants and everything and everyone is really buzzing. We had a meal of gallettes tonight which we enjoyed again despite the annoying loud person on the next table but the weather is better here and it’s really nice to be back in Paris. We couldn’t get over how many many people were on the boat ride on the Seine. Almost looked like a refugee boat. Czytaj więcej

  • Paris Day 2 - Beauty & Sprain!

    19 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

This morning we had breakfast in our room and then walked down to firstly see the Sainte Chappelle. It has been on our list for a VERY long time and did not disappoint. What beautiful leadlight in a magnificent setting. We parted with Phil & Diane after that and walked quite a long way to get to the Musee D'Orsay - a favourite of both of us. It was very crowded so we made sure we went to see the Degas & Manet exhibition and then some of our other favourites. All wonderful until I missed a step and twisted my ankle. Managed to walk all the way home but it's all swollen now!! Czytaj więcej

  • Paris the Beauty/Garnier Opera

    20 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Last night we had a wonderful couple of hours with John Mitchell and his wife Nicole and second baby Hayden. John was our neighbour and Luke's good friend when we lived in Azalea Street, Prospect:). They have lived in Paris for the last five years - working for the OECD and WHO. What a lovely young couple getting the most out of their lives. Nicole gave us a lovely box of Popelini - yummy miniature Paris creamy puffs/eclairs - various flavours and we have decided they are better than macarons! This morning we tried to UBER to the Garnier Opera House but the UBER rejected our request because it seemed very busy. We ended up taking the Metro. The Opera building is magnificent and certainly worth seeing again - and sharing it with the other three. (Photo 3 is looking down to our hotel lobby from our 5th Floor room. Glad there is a lift! • Paris Beauty/Galleries Lafayette

    20 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

After a good coffee (thank goodness - Italian coffee is MUCH better), we went on to Galleries Lafayette. Such a gorgeous store and besides the galleries we went up to the top of the dome and then to the roof to see magnificent views of Paris. Afterwards, we walked and got a little lost but saw some more areas of Paris e.g. the theatre area - Rocador - but it was busy everywhere! We also enjoyed another baguette with tomato, mozzarella and more! The bread in France is better than in Italy! Czytaj więcej

  • Last night in Paris

    20 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

This evening we went out for our last Evening meal in Paris with Phil and Diane. They paid for the meal as Craig’s 70th birthday gift and it was a very lovely dinner at a nice restaurant called Le Christine. Delicious fish and a fennel tart and roasted peach dessert were all delicious. During the walk home the area is once again buzzing and full of people I think we chose well with this hotel which is called The grand Hotel de L’ univers!! Czytaj więcej

  • Departure day morning

    21 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

We have to check out by midday from our hotel but we are not leaving until about 11 pm tonight so it will be a long day. Craig and I got up early and went for a lovely walk not very far away to see the Luxembourg Gardens. The Luxembourg Palais is now the Senate but the gardens adjacent to it are open to the public and they are magnificent with many statues and lovely flower beds and a couple of lakes with fountains. We actually feel a bit cool this morning. On the way back we also saw the Saint Sulpice Cathedral which is also Gothic but had lovely statues in it and a pop-up confessional. I particularly like the Italian looking pulpit With matching staircase is leading up to it. France and Paris in particular certainly has many beautiful things in it. Czytaj więcej

  • Last day lunch and waiting

    21 lipca 2023, Francja ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Craig did not feel great so we stayed in our room until midi checkout. We then took them for a walk and eventually parted for lunch which we had at Le Danton. Salad was good 👍. On the way back to the hotel we walked past Le Procope which is apparently the oldest cafe in the world. Started by a siciliano of this surname many famous writers dined here including Voltaire. Apparently even Napoleon Bonaparte dined here and he couldn’t pay so he left his hat there and never went back to get it. Believe it or not🇮🇹🇮🇹. Looong day of waiting. But we did manage some retail therapy at the Desigual shop and then did another little walk around this beautiful city and finally found a millefeuille to enjoy. But we both agreed it’s not as good as Murattis. At airport in lounge and still waiting, waiting, waiting. Czytaj więcej

  • What a great trip

    23 lipca 2023, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

So I am currently sitting on the plane with 40 minutes to go to Adelaide. I am really enjoying watching the Whitney Houston movie. Changi airport was great and it was good to only have a 5 hour layover instead of 11!! It certainly was a long holiday and parts of it was too hot. The highlights always include Rome but we also loved the RINALDI reunion at my cousins place, Cicely was well worth visiting and the ruins and the food were wonderful. Travelling with good friends Janet and Sinclair was also good. The UK included two very good shows, lovely sunny weather and visiting great people. And we did really enjoy France including our Uzes sojourn and this time when we went to Paris we thought it would be the last time, but it was so beautiful and enjoyable that we may have to go back again. As always the best part was travelling with my Craig ❤️❤️❤️🇮🇹🇬🇧🇫🇷 Czytaj więcej
