      Cameron Highlands - cooling down

      For the last three days Vany, Matthias and me visited the beautiful Cameron Highlands.
      The rather cool area is known for its tea and strawberries as well as its local honey.

      The drive up to the highlands was long, curvy and exhausting. We arrived in the evening and just managed to get some nice Indian food for dinner.
      The next day we visited the famous Boh Tea plantation, a strawberry farm and a local market. After some nice pictures at the plantation, we drove to a local market. We tried some Malaysian Street food - corn and sweet potato balls and wandered through the market. The last stop was a strawberry farm where we picked our own strawberries for the “full highlands experience”🍓. Vany and me managed to find the most beautiful and tastiest of the area 😝.
      For dinner we decided to try the famous lical steamboat - a mixture of Fondue and Raclettegrill. We had a fun and tasty evening eating and playing cards.

      Yesterday we started our day earlier and went for a hike up to a viewpoint. A trek right through the jungle of the highlands - very adventurous! 🤣 All the way up to the top we had to local guides - two dogs joint us on our way to the trail and walked with us all the way up, waited while we enjoyed the view and escorted us back down! So cute😍🥰🐕.
      For the rest of the day we tried some local tea and played lots of cards.

      Today is the day to say goodbye to Cameron Highlands, drive back to the airport and drop Vany off at her Work-away 😟.

      Die letzten drei Tage verbrachten Vany, Matthias und ich in den wunderschönen Cameron Highlands.
      Die etwas kühlere Gegend ist für Tee Plantagen, Erdbeerfarmen und den lokalen Honig bekannt.

      Die Fahrt hinauf ins Hochland war lang, kurvenreich und anstrengend. Wir kamen erst abends an und schafften es gerade noch etwas leckeres indisches zum Abendessen zu finden.
      Am nächsten Tag besuchten wir die berühmte Boh Tee Plantage, eine Erdbeerfarm und einen lokalen Markt.
      Nach einigen schönen Bildern auf der Plantage fuhren wir zu einem lokalen Markt zum Frühstücken. Wir probierten ein paar malaysische Spezialitäten - Mais und Süßkartoffelbällchen - aus und schlenderten über den Markt. Der letzte Halt war eine Erdbeerfarm, bei der wir unsere eigenen Erdbeeren für die “ultimative highlands experience"🍓 pflückten. Vany und ich haben es geschafft, die schönsten und leckersten der Gegend zu finden 😝.
      Zum Abendessen beschlossen wir, das berühmte Steamboat zu probieren - eine Mischung aus Fondue und Raclettegrill. Wir hatten einen lustigen und leckeren Abend mit Essen und Kartenspielen.

      Gestern haben wir unseren Tag früher begonnen und haben eine Wanderung zu einem Aussichtspunkt gemacht. Eine Wanderung direkt durch den Dschungel des Hochlandes - sehr abenteuerlich! 🤣 Den ganzen Weg nach oben hatten wir zwei guides - zwei Hunde haben sich uns auf em Weg zum eigentlichen Trail angeschlossen und uns den ganzen Weg hinauf begleitet. Sie haben ebenfalls oben, während wir die Aussicht genossen, gewartet und uns wieder zurück nach unten begleitet! So mega süß die zwei 😍🥰🐕.
      Den Rest des Tages verbrachten wir mit jeder Menge Kartenspielen und dem lokalen Tee.

      Heute ist der Tag, um sich von den Cameron Highlands zu verabschieden, zurück zum Flughafen zu fahren und Vany bei ihrem Work-away abzusetzen 😟.      Leggi altro

      Cameron Highlands

      Early in the morning at 6:00 I got up to catch a ferry to the mainland of Malaysia. Unfortunately, I couldn't book any bus or train connections in advance (didn't know the right stations), so the delay of the ferry was a challenge to arrive in the evening at all.

      I was given incredible help from the Grab driver, unfortunately the scheduled bus was then delayed and we had to re-arrange. The last solution was a transfer of 4 minutes (train station Butterworth to bus station there), which seemed unmanageable to me. I sprinted to the bus station and flagged down before the bus even though it had already started the motor and drove 3 meters. Wow was I relieved, but I made it. 🙌🏽🙌🏽💪🏽(Lessons Learned: Book always a transfer in advance, otherwise you get fucked up..😂)

      On the way there I met Anna from Hungary and in the evening we booked a half-day tour at Cameron Highlands, which is known for its tea plantations and strawberry plantations. The strawberry plantation is not worth seeing said many from the hostel before, because in Germany there are supposedly larger. In addition, I was here 1,500 meters above sea level, which means cold weater. Furthermore i went in the raining season to Malaysia, so the weater is not the best currently.

      Next day:

      We got up tomorrow at 6:30 and first made a hike in the second oldest forest in the world, which is known for its moss stocks (Mossy Forest, ~200 million years old). Since there is a lot of tourism hiking and the tourists touch the moss, it dies and it takes 15-20 years to grow again at the touching point. Also, to protect nature the locals did not want to open up new hiking routes, which I found remarkable from the locals.

      The next stop would be a non-tourist tea plantation, which unfortunately was not passable, because the road there was damaged by a landslide (In the evening I talked to some, that this was but promptly passable again...🤬)

      We went to another tea plantation and there the tea was very tasty. Worth mentioning is, that people from Skri Lanka, India and Thailand come with 3-4 years contracts, away from their family, to harvest the tea leaves. For one kilo of leaves they earn 30 cents, which is just damn little…

      After the tour was completed, Anna was not feeling good so I planned my further route and booked a flight from Singapore to Indonesia at the 13rd of October (Surabaya) and planned the further route. (Kuala Lumpur, Malacca, Singapore, flight to Surabaya, Bromo Volcano, Ijen Crater and then I want to chill in Bali until about mid-November.

      ... viel zu früh am Morgen gings los mit einem Jeep und 7 weiteren Frühaufstehern. Erste Etappe: Die Teefarmen im Cameron Tal. Es gibt natürlich noch andere Farmen, es wuchert ja alles hier, aber die Teeplantagen sehen schon spektakulär aus. Es war echt windig und patschnass alles aber die Luft warm... trotzdem hat sichs arschkalt angefühlt. Im Teehaus noch ne kleine, wärmende Kostprobe bestellt...ist halt Tee ne ..Leggi altro

      Cameron Highlands

      Gester sind mir nachhere kurveriiche Busfahrt ide Cameron Highlands acho. Und hüt hend mir e Blueme-Farm bsuecht. Die viele Blueme sind sehr iidrücklich gsi. Im Aschluss sind mir mit üsm Taxifahrer zunere Teeplantage gfahre und er het üs ufm Weg viel über Produktion vo Tee verzellt. Zum Bispiiel das Grüentee und Schwarztee vom gliche Teebaum chunt und sich eigentlich nur durch de Herstelligsprozess unterscheidet. Au hend mir en churze Blick hinter Kulisse dörfe werfe, und so die verschiedene Prozess bide Teeherstellig gse. D ussicht uf d Plantage isch phänomenal gsi.Leggi altro

      Tee-Plantagen

      Die Cameron Highlands sind insb. für Tee und Erdbeeren bekannt. Die größte Tee-Plantage haben wir besichtigt.
      Wenig überraschend haben die britischen Kolonialherren den Tee hier hin gebracht. Entdeckt wurden die Highlands 1885 von dem Landvermesser William Cameron und daher nach ihm benannt. Unser Guide heute ist indischer Abstammung. Er erzählte uns, dass seine Eltern aus Indien hierher zum Teepflücken gekommen waren und er dies als Kind auch noch getan hat. Zu der Zeit als seine Eltern nach Malaysia kamen waren sowohl Indien als auch Malaysia britische Kolonien und deren Einwohner britische Staatsbürger. Ein Umzug war damals sehr einfach, praktisch nur innerhalb des Landes. Als Malaysia vor 65 Jahren die Unabhängigkeit erklärte, entschieden sich seine Eltern nicht zurück nach Indien zu gehen und malaysische Staatsbürger zu werden.
      Insgesamt gibt es sehr viele indisch stämmige Leute in den Cameron Highlands. Die familiäre Geschichte unseres Guides ist sehr typisch für die Einwohner hier.      Leggi altro

      Cameron Highlands

      9 a.m. - I tried to call our next hostel in Taman Negara for some information about the weather and the tours but unfortunately nobody answered. So we got some Roti with egg and my first white coffee for breakfast. White coffee is made of special roasted coffee beans and very common in Malaysia. Is a bit sweet but I like it. After breakfast I called again and this time someone answered. I found out that they don’t provide the 2D1N tour in the jungle but all others and for further information I should send him a message. So I send him a message and we booked the accommodation. After that we played some “Siedler von Catan”.

      1 p.m. - We went for lunch again in the Indian restaurant and I ate the same as yesterday.

      3 p.m. - After lunch Femke, Lars and I decided to hitchhike to Cameron Lavender fields. The hitchhike to the place was quite easy but it was a long drive of 30mins. Once we were there it was a weird experience. The had a lot of different flowers and some strawberries. Furthermore they had kind of a castel which reminded me of Disney Land and many souvenir shop’s. But they had a nice lavender ice cream. I think we were 30min in there after we decided to go back. We hitchhiked back but in was more difficult. Most of the cars which drove by just made fun of us but after 20min we got a taxi.

      5 p.m. - After we came back we played another game of “Siedler von Catan“ and some other games.

      7:30 p.m. - Later we got some dinner, not at the Indian place. It was more a random place and I got some food which I didn’t expected but it was still good. I went to bed early this night because I was really tired.      Leggi altro

      2. Teeplantagen

      Die Teeplantagen sind hier im Hochland ein echtes Highlight und wir sind sehr gespannt! Wir werden zum Fotografieren ausgesetzt und bekommen später eine kurze Erklärung zum Teeanbau. Wir lernen: Die Teepflanzen sind alle gleich und stammen ursprünglich aus Sri Lanka. Die unterschiedlichen Sorten kommen nur durch die verschiedenen zugesetzten Aromen, das Alter der Blätter bzw. die Art des Trinkens (Milch, Zucker und so) zustande. Die Qualität des hiesigen Tees ist sehr gut, aber lange nicht die Beste. Denn auf den BOH-Plantagen (BOH=Best of Highland) wird der Tee mit Maschine geerntet und die nimmt beim Schneiden halt alles mit. neben den Blättern auch alles, was sich so auf den Blättern befindet: Schlangen, Spinnen usw. Aussortiert wird da hinterher nichts mehr 😱!
      Der beste Tee kommt aus Sri Lanka (Lipton Tee) und aus China, denn in diesen Ländern wird nach wie vor von Hand geerntet. Wieder was gelernt!!!      Leggi altro

      4. Sungai Palas BOH Tea Estate

      BOH ist der Name des hochwertigen Tees, der hier auf den Plantagen angebaut wird. Wir besichtigen die Teefabrik, in der seit 1935 der Tee verarbeitet wird und wo auch heute noch unter den gleichen Bedingungen der Tee hergestellt wird. Wie das geschieht können wir hinter großen Glasscheiben beobachten. Benötigt werden nach der Ernte lediglich fünf Arbeitsschritte - Welken (Belüftung und Vortrocknung), Rollen (Zerreißen der Blattstruktur und Entfernung der Blattrispen: https://1drv.ms/v/s!AiUv8teodO-roQ7yE3QrezIkJrgn), Fermentation (Trocknung und Gärung bei konstanter Feuchte), Trocknen, Sieben/Sortieren. Der sortierte Tee wird in große Säcke verpackt und auf die Reise nach Kuala Lumpur geschickt. Die Verkaufsverpackung und Versand in den weltweiten Handel erfolgt dann dort.
      Auch die Erntemaschine erscheint uns einfach und praktisch und ist heute genauso im Einsatz. Je ein Mensch links und rechts und los gehts.

      Letzter Tag in den Highlands

      Heute habe ich an einer 5,5h-Tour teilgenommen, weil ich noch Spatzen von gestern hab😅 Die Tour war eigentlich ganz okay - mein Highlight war die Butterfly Farm (wo es nicht nur Schmetterlinge gibt). Sonst waren wir auch noch im Rosengarten, bei den Teeplantagen + Fabrik, der Bienenfarm, einer Strawberry Farm und beim Central Market. 🦋🌹🐝🍓Leggi altro
