      📍 THE COLOURFUL CANALS OF XOCHIMILCO, MEXICO

      Xochimilco is a borough south of Mexico City mostly known for the colourful gondola style boats called trajineras

      When people talk about visiting Xochimilco, what they’re usually referring to is the network of canals known as The Floating Gardens of Xochimilco rather than the surrounding area. The photogenic, brightly coloured gondolas, or Xochimilco Trajineras, that cruise up and down the waterways are what have made it so popular among both foreign and Mexican tourists alike.

      And I’ve seen it variously described as the Mexican Venice, a cultural booze cruise, and even a youth club on water.

      Yes, it’s touristy but it can also be a lot of fun. Locals head to Xochimilco to celebrate everything from birthdays to bachelorettes and even quinceañeras.      Baca lagi

      Museum und fussball

      Es geht in einen fancy Teil der Stadt in dem Carlos Slim, reichste Mexikaner ever. Teilweise reichste Mensch der Welt. Laut Wikipedia Artikel eher so semiesympatischer Mann seiner toten Frau zur Ehre ein Museum mit seiner Kunstsammlungen gewidmet hat. Bisschen surreal viel Zeug zusammen kauft auf jeden Fall. Viel altes Zeug aus Europa und das Gebäude ist sehr fancy.

      Fussball am Nachmittag. Im Azteken Stadium :) ich bekomme es nicht mehr zusammen aber Deutschland war hier glaub mal im Finale. Blue azul gegen Monterrey. Leider muss man anstehen für die Karten und wir kommen erst deutlich zu spät rein aber es ist ein sehr cooles Stadion und auf jeden Fall ein Erlebnis.

      Ich hab mich dann mal wieder trieben lassen und saß in einem Hummer und wir sind Richtung speak easy bar gefahren als es Probleme gab. Also nicht wirklich Probleme, aber Dinge die sich dann irgend wie geregelt haben.

      Es gibt auf jeden Fall Leute mit sehr viel Geld hier und richtig fancy location. Irgend wann ist ein Drink von der Decke gehangen.

      Erkenntnisse. Obwohl ich viel Zeit habe lass ich mich stressen. The fear of missing out is real. Ich versuch jetzt beim nächsten stop auf jeden Fall mehr zu chillen.
      5 Tage hier und schon 30 mal mein Leben erzählt und dargelegt warum mein Englisch nicht zu meinem Pass passt.

      Birding with Rafa

      For my birthday in March, Sheryl got me to most fantastic new pair of binoculars. It is a completely different experience. I can see EVERYTHING! The birds magically appear in my binoculars and the colours are clear and vibrant. It makes birding so much easier and a real pleasure.

      I scheduled a six-hour birding trip to see birds of the forest and lakes with this organization IHUITL (pronunciation: EE-weetl) a word of Náhuatl origin meaning "feather." The organization combines science, art and culture - including birding tours. I do love the idea of supporting this kind of group.       Rafael picked me up at 6am just as Gail’s taxi arrived to take her to the airport for her next adventure in Guatemala. I will miss her. As I was in Spanish mode, I just started talking with Rafa in Spanish and continued for the whole of the tour. With a few vocabulary words, constant mis-gendering, and probably some stumbling verb conjugations, it was easy to communicate. This is why I have spent so much time studying. There is a sense of freedom and connection that I feel I have speaking Spanish here.

      We went south to the Bosque de Tlalpan (Tlalpan Forest). The park was busy with runners and folks out enjoying some exercise to start their Mother’s Day. The parkland, like everything south, is made up of volcanic rock. It makes for some interesting tree and shrub cover as well as nice birding habitat. The altitude and hilly terrain made for some huffing and puffing - but I was able to keep up.

      Next, we went to Xochimilco Ecological Park. Here we saw all kinds of water birds, herons, egrets, ducks and even some pelicans. They also had a nice demonstration garden showing how the indigenous peoples farmed the land back in the day. I like water birds - they don’t flit from branch to branch, and they are generally pretty big. IDing them is much easier.

      Rafa got me back to my apartment just after noon. He was off to go to his brother’s house to celebrate Mother’s Day with his family. Rafa let me know how wonderful it was for him to be able to do the tour in Spanish. Usually he does them in English - being able to speak in his own language, gave him (and me) the opportunity to converse beyond just pointing, identifying and talking “bird” the whole time. It was a wonderful way to enjoy my last day in Mexico City.

      I added 25 new birds to my “life list” - birds that I hadn’t IDed before. Here are the birds we saw (and heard):

      Bootsfahrt

      Als nächstes gings nach Xochimilco. Dort sind wir mit einem Boot auf dem Fluss entlang gefahren worden. Sie nennen es dort die schwimmenden Gärten. Es sind dort so viele Boote unterwegs, dass es manchmal richtig Stau gibt. Neben den Touristenbooten fahren kleine Boote mit Händlern vorbei und auch Boote mit Mariachimusikern, bei denen man sich ein Lied gegen Bezahlung wünschen kann.
      Wir haben auf dem Boot unser Mittagessen gegessen und ich hab mir Pulque zum trinken gekauft. Ähnlich wie bei uns Sturm nur aus Agave.

      Nach der Bootstour haben wir uns kurz die Bibliothek der Universität von Mexiko angesehen, die eine etwas andere Außenfassade hat.

      Einen weiteren Zwischenstopp machten wir im Viertel San Angel, wo Straßenhändler handgemachte Sachen verkauften und eine schöne kleine Kirche steht, mit einem wunderschönen Innenhof.      Baca lagi

      Restaurante Arroyo

      Amazing restaurant with typical mexican food and Mariachis included!!
      We had Chile en nogada (stuffed pepper with wallnuts sauce), enchiladas and some other thing we didn’t know (but were not too impressed)

      Xochimilco - die Bootsfahrt der Tränen

      Xochimilco: Kurz erklärt man fährt in bunten Booten (sie nennen es Gondeln) ein künstlich angelegtes Bewässerungssystem entlang. Bekommt dabei hin und wieder kitschige Musik von Mariachi - Bands vorgetrellert, kann Getränke und Essen auf „Lebensmittelbooten“ kaufen, schaut sich Axolotl (mexikanischer Schwanzlurch - bedrohte Tierart in Mexiko) an und verbringt dann bei romantischem Sonnenuntergang die Zeit zu Zweit (so die Vorstellung..)
      Die Realität sah definitiv anders aus -
      1. Problem wir waren zu dritt - was sollen wir mit Hans in einer so romantischen Umgebung? Naja immer gut seinen Privatfotografen dabei zu haben..
      Dann zog ein Gewitter Stückchen für Stückchen in das Tal hinein.
      Als kurze Randinfo solltet ihr wissen, dass dieser künstlich erbaute Kanal der Azteken zwischen einigen Bergen und Hügeln liegt, wodurch Gewitter natürlich in Lichtgeschwindigkeit vorüberziehen kann.
      Als hätte die kleine Maus, mit ihrer Piepsstimme, nicht die anderen beiden gewarnt, diese Bootsfahrt aufzuschieben, nahm das Unheil seinen Lauf.
      Und ich sage euch liebe Mitleser und Mitleserinnen, eine Bootsfahrt ist nicht lustig, eine Bootsfahrt ist nicht schön - im Gewitter!
      Schon gar nicht in einem Holzboot, mit Blechdach, bei 2h heftigstem Gerumpel, sowie im Blitzlichtgewitter 🛶
      Dies stellten auch die beiden Mäuseriche fest, als die kleine Maus bibbern und weinend, knöcheltief im Wasser im Boot versank. Die Mariachi Band (traditionell mexikanische Band) unterstrich die ganze Dramatik drei volle Stunden - na happy Birthday 🥳
      Als die letzte Stunde das Gewitter endlich vorübergezogen war, wurde die Stimmung etwas besser (der Moment, in dem fast all diese Bilder entstanden sind, auf denen man denken könnte, es wäre wirklich eine Romanze zu dritt gewesen)😂
      Axolotls haben wir im übrigen auch gesehen, eingesperrt in einem Wasserbecken - das haben wir uns definitiv anders vorgestellt.
      Eine Stunde lang haben wir den Frieden auf Erden und das ein oder andere kühle Kaltgetränk genossen, bis wir zurück in den Hafen einfuhren.
      An der Promenade war auf einmal alles verschanzt und es war keine Menschenseele mehr zu sehen, wobei doch. Militärleute samt ihrer Panzerfahrzeuge (ca 6 Stück) fuhren vollbewaffnet an der Promenade entlang.
      Da hatten wir grade das Gewitter überlebt und dann hat man sich schon in einem Kugelhagel gesehen..
      Zumindest die kleine Maus, die sowas ja noch nie zuvor gesehen hat.
      Die netten Männer vom Militär sagten uns allerdings, dass es eine routine Razzia sei - komisch, dass alle Geschäftsinhaber ausgeflogen waren, oder sich verbarrikadiert hatten - es hätte nur noch die rollende Wüstenhexe gefehlt, dann wäre die „Wilder Westen“ Atmosphäre perfekt gewesen 🙉
      Sicher im Auto angekommen, machten sich die drei auf den Rückweg in ihre Hotels. Während der Fahrt trällerte die kleine Maus im Hintergrund immer wieder „ich hab’s euch ja gesagt..“, wobei dies gar nicht bis nach vorne durchdring, da zwei von dreien nur den Klängen der Musik lauschten und sich über den Abenteuertrip erfreuten.
      Im Hotel angekommen, schlug der Jetlag dann richtig zu, allerdings auch das Essen vom Vortag (falls ihr euch erinnert?)
      Dadurch lag man immerhin nicht schweißtreibend im Bett, sondern trug andere Kämpfe auf der Toilette aus.. in diesem Sinne gute Nacht 🌙      Baca lagi

      Playoff Viertelfinalrückspiel zwischen Club América und Club León. Das Hinspiel ging 2-2 aus.

      Ticketpreis: 13,75€

      Das Spiel fand im legendären Estadio Azteca statt, dem einzigen Stadion weltweit das bereits zweimal Gastgeber eines WM Eröffnungs- sowie Finalspiels war (1970 & 1986). Auch das sogenannte Jahrhundertspiel zwischen Deutschland und Italien fand hier 1970 vor 102.444 Zuschauern statt.

      Heutzutage passen 83.264 Zuschauer hinein, auch bei der kommenden WM 2026 finden hier Spiele statt.      Baca lagi

      Coyoacán

      We went to Coayacan (that means Coyote), a beautiful colonial neighbourhood in the South of CDMX.
      We had lunch at La Coyoacana, with Mariachis included and then we went for a walk around the area.
      We visited El callejón del Aguacate (old back street with spooky stories.
      We tried to see some murales at La Casa de ñas Culturas, but either it was the wrong casa, or the info online was wrong, as we didn’t find any murales paintings, except the emergency point.
      We had a pit stop for a refreshement before we continued to Frida Kalho’s house… but surprise… the deluge started and we ended up running in the street like wet rabbits and waited for our taxis to arrive inside a bakery owned by a lovely grandma.
      So we had no other option but to go to a bar and drink tequila…      Baca lagi

      Island of the Dolls

      On the creepier island of the canals is the Isla de las Munecas. The Island of the Dolls is dedicated to the lost soul of a young girl who died under strange circumstances. Local legend says that the dolls whisper to each other.

      Floating by, I felt like I was in a Stephen King movie. Goose bumps. Seriously.

      Anahuacalli Museo in Coyoacán

      Gail wanted to connect with some folks who she knew in Mexico City, so I was on my own for the day. After my cranky morning dealing with the AirBnB host, I walked over to the Anahuacalli Museum. It was a lovely 50-minute walk through a working neighbourhood. Lots of busy people getting on with their day. It was fun to be so completely out of a touristed area for a bit.

      The museum itself is quite amazing. It is constructed from volcanic rock to mirror the construction of the pyramids and architecture of the indigenous peoples. It also had some more “modern” art deco elements. It was designed by Diego Rivera and a famous architect at the time to house the enormous collection of antiquities that Rivera had amassed over the years. They were exquisite pieces that I’m not quite sure how they could have survived undamaged over the hundreds if not thousands of years.

      I got a chance to talk with a couple of the museum guards/staff who were very knowledgeable and solicitous - wanting to share what they knew about the art, architecture and history of the place. I was delighted. There is a deep sense of pride and joy that they shared. It was another opportunity for me to use my Spanish.

      That evening, Gail and I walked the square and discovered a group of folks engaged in a public ceremony/celebration/worship of dancing and drumming. It was not for money or for tourists. It looked like they were having fun. What a great way to end the day.      Baca lagi
