      Fun fact: KEINE EINZIGE Szene aus „Casablanca“ wurde in Casablanca gedreht 😃. Rick‘s Cafe in Casablanca wurde 2004 der Kulisse aus dem Film nachempfunden 😃🤷‍♀️ PS: Der Gin Tonic hier ist günstiger als ein Coffee-Break Gedeck mit Tee oder Mokka und drei Keksen 😃😃Lue lisää

      Casablanca - Day 1/2

      Travel day went smoothly and spent the last 2 days in Morocco’s largest city Casablanca. The usual first day culture-shock and jet lag. The city, like most has 2 sides of very wealthy, and a large population of those begging on the street as well as a lot of stray cats!
      Pictures include a day of sightseeing:
      Hassan II Mosque … one of the largest mosques in the world built and the only one in Morocco that non-Muslim’s can enter.
      Also visited the Casablanca cathedral with beautiful stained-glass Catholic Church, the famous Ricks Cafe (movie Casablanca), and the tranquil Arab League Park.

      Casablanca

      We say goodbye to Egypt 🇪🇬🥲. Very interesting flight over - we did not fly over Africa but up towards Albania and then across the Mediterranean, and you could see the actual landscape of all the islands. Morocco here we come! Yala Beena!! First port of call is Casablanca. Made our motel after lunch and went for a wander round the old town and to the port. Very surprised by how western this is in comparison to Egypt - and lots of “Australian” plants including gum trees. Traffic is almost normal instead of driving over two lanes and managing by “talking” to each other with horns.
      And in the local shopping centre found ourselves a pseudo Wendy’s ice cream 🍦. Fell into bed as 26 hour day starting at 3am      Lue lisää

      Schon fast vorbei

      Ich hätte noch gut eine Woche am Meer bleiben können. Da dies aber eine Rundreise ist, steigen wir um 08.30 in den Bus und nehmen die letzten 350km zurück nach Casablanca in Angriff. Kaum zu glauben, dass die Reise schon fast zu Ende ist. Erst kam es uns vor als würde sie nie ändern und dann, zägg letzter Tag. Auf der Fahrt wird meh gequatscht und bei einander gesessen als sonst, alle fühlen den baldigen Abschied. Da wir 1.5h früher abgefahren sind als geplant, können wir um 15.00 die Moschee Hassen ll doch noch besichtigen. Ab 15.00 Uhr werden Führungen in allen Sprachen angeboten.
      Die Moschee ist dir drittgrösste Moschee der Welt. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern jemals so hoche Decken gesehen zu haben. Sie ist topmodern, aus Stahl gebaut und wirkt trotzdem altehrwürdig. Das Dach kann geöffnet werden, damit die Gläubigen an Ramadan alle frische Luft haben. Im unteren Bereich befinden sich die Waschräume. Das Wetter ist zwar schlechter als letztes Mal aber immerhin konnten wir uns das tolle Gebäude noch ansehen. Im Hotel angekommen, stehen wir alle wieder an der selben Stelle wie vor 11 Tagen. Ein bisschen fühlt es sich an als würde die Reise gleich los gehen uns nicht, als wäre sie bereits vorbei.
      Später treffen wir uns im Restaurant des Hotels wo wir lecker aber sehr unmarrokanisch essen. Mach langem Plaudern und spielen am Kicker gehen wie langsam zu Bett. Morgen fahren wir bereits um 9 Uhr los.      Lue lisää

      Ist reisen nicht schön?

      Wie ungewohnt erst um 13.30 in den Zug zu steigen. Ab nach Genf und dort von einer Schlange zur nächsten. Auf diese Strapazen hab ich mir auch mein letztes legales Bier in der Öffentlichlkeit für die nächsten 12 Tage verdient. Zusammen mit einem Dafalgan und meinem Tablet macht es auch gleich den Flug viel angenehmer 😉
      Am Flughafen fällt eine junge Frau die alleine unterwegs ist, so schnell auf, das mein Guide mich in 1Min gefunden hat. Nun warte ich wieder, dieses Mal auf den zweiten Teil der Gruppe. Bargeld habe ich noch keines, aber das wird sich wohl nich ergeben. Eine Stunde später sind dann auch die anderen da. Hungrig und erschöpft fahren wir im grossen Car zum Hotel. Um 23.15 sind wir dann auch da und um 23.45 im Bett. Zum Glück geht es morgen ja schon um 9 weiter 😅      Lue lisää

      Casablanca 2

      Sonntag morgen Ramadan kein Kaffee zu finden nur das was Mc Donalds sich darunter vorstellt. Der Baumarkt öffnet um 9 Uhr. Gehe in mein Shoppingcenter wo ich gestern in einen Kaufrausch fiel und mir eine Treckinghose gekauft habe und meine Alte nach 20 Jahren aussortiert wird. Dann in der Medina noch eine Fake Levis für 18 Euro. Heute vielleicht noch ein Hoodie, habe aber kein Platz, egal das Leben dort fängt erst am Nachmittag an. Gestern im Café den Sieg des BVB gesehen. Ich habe mich gefreut und die Marokkaner mit mir. Es gibt keinen Alkohol und kiffen ist verboten, was aber wirklich niemanden kümmert. Jeder der will kifft. Casablanca und Marakesch sind die Schwulenhochburgen. Es wird nicht öffentlich zelebriert aber alles toleriert.
      Ich lerne viele eigene Vorurteile gegenüber dem Islam zu hinterfragen, wenn ich sehe wie die Menschen hier leben.
      Die meisten richten sich fünf Mal am Tag gegen Mekka, die Moscheen sind voll, das Vertrauen in Religion als ethischer Anker ist hier bemerkbar, was die christliche Kirche leider verspielt hat.
      Aber auch der Adolf in arabischer Übersetzung treibt sein Unwesen unter Liebesromanen und Trivialliteratur.

      Casablanca layover

      We had a 11hr layover in casablanca on our trip to agadir so we got to have a bit of a look around the city and it was super dope!! The air here is nice and cool and feels like down south air, it smells like fish and chips everywhere and the food is amazing :). We had some kind of slow cooked beef for lunch and it was easily one of the best meals we've had on the trip so far, and it also only cost $6! I saw a pretty sick right from the train, it was a bit fat but over head high and no one was out! Was so stoked to see an actual wave again its been so long!!! Being near an actual ocean definitely raised morale were both very excited to get in the water tomorrow :)).Lue lisää

      Into Casablanca

      I made it to Casablanca with a beautiful sunrise. I got my accommodation driver to pick me up rather than try and get the train or convince a taxi driver to drive the quickest route!
      I'm glad I did as my accommodation is a Ryad ( guesthouse) in the middle of a Medina (market stalls) in the old town. Probably never would have found it!!

      Went for a long walk until my room was ready. I remembered how much I love exploring new places!!
      Casablanca is a port city and has 2 "people beaches".

      There's new clean buildings and lots of old rundown suburbs like any city, but they do all have a satellite dish!!

      Then I had an afternoon nap and fell into the trap of sleeping through so now it's 2am and I'm writing an update 😊

      This morning I'm booked to do a half day tour of Casablanca, we meet at Rick's Cafe of Casablanca the Movie fame.

      There's no Telstra roaming reception in Morocco so I can only communicate when there's wifi available. So via Messenger and email.      Lue lisää

      The Medina and Beyond tour

      Today was supposed to be a 4 hour walking/ bit of car tour of part of the city where I am - the Old Medina and mosques, etc. Turned out we just kept on going further and ended up with a 7 hour tour instead!! No extra charge!

      We met at Rick's Cafe of the movie Casablanca fame.
      There were 5 of us on tour, - a couple from Italy and a couple from San Antonio, Texas. We all got on really well and was sad to leave them really.
      Our guide was called Mohammed.

      So we walked some and a taxi drove us lots as well.
      Our guide gave us an added extra of a tour inside the Hassan II Mosque. An inside tour wasn't the deal but he took us on a private tour with himself. The other couples had to pay, I didn't because I was on an Intrepid tour or something, still don't quite get it but ok thanks 😊. It was a bit special today also because the inside was all lit up because some dignitaries had just been in. There'll be 2 pages of just photos of this Mosque, it is very beautiful. The Casablancans are very proud of it because "it is built on the water" (reclaimed land) and it has the highest minuret in Africa.

      We visited other mosques and churches. A museum or 2. Saw the slums and the rich area plus the King's home when he's in Casablanca. Apparently he lives mostly in Rabat.

      We visited the old Medina near me plus the new Medina, including an olive tasting, mint tea, pastries. There was a local rug auction in the street.
      Medina means the old walled part of a North African town

      We didn't get lunch until 3.30! Imagine how hangry I was feeling, but so was my Texan friend 😂. So eventually we had a targine of choice. Mine was chicken with lemon and olives, very nice.

      Then hometime so had another wander in the Medina markets here. Bought a couple of pottery things. I also went to the train station to buy a Telecom Maroc sim card. The bloke at the shop activated it all for me. Google maps won't work without data

      Then a light tea of a lovely Moroccan soup with bread and olives with their Moroccan mint tea.

      Last night in Morocco! Casablanca

      Dianne and I didn’t get to spend much time in out Casablanca hotel. We checked out at 10:30 pm for a 2:30 am flight to Frankfurt, but there was time for a farewell dinner with all of our travelling companions. Our tour guide Khalid did an excellent job for us for the last two weeks.Lue lisää
