      Marlborough region

      1. april 2017, New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

There was one day we spent in France a few years ago, in a small town called Tain L'Hermitage in the Rhone Valley, that was close to perfect (go there if you are ever nearby). Today came close to that...

We left Nelson this morning and drove to the Marlborough region. Our first stop was Havelock, where we stopped at Cullen Point (thought of you Katherine!) and walked up to the viewpoint where we could see across Pelorus Sound, a beautiful view. Havelock calls itself "The mussel capital of NZ", so we couldn't resist the restaurant called The Mussel Pot for lunch. We all shared a mussel platter, with green-lipped mussels cooked a number of different ways, plus chips - delicious, especially washed down with a glass of local sauvignon blanc.

We then drove on to Blenheim, the "capital" of the Marlborough region, where we're staying for a couple of nights. We arrived mid-afternoon, so we decided to visit one of the many wineries on the way to our motel. One of the first wineries we passed was the iconic Cloudy Bay - we called in and saw the vines, full of grapes ready to be harvested, and fittingly the sky was indeed cloudy! We indulged in a wine tasting experience there, where we got to taste 9 different wines in all and we treated ourselves to a couple of bottles (including a Pelorus fizz, named after the Sound we saw earlier today). It was a great experience, even if we did blow the budget there! Afterwards we called into an artisan chocolate shop and got some free samples to taste. We then spent the evening relaxing in our surprisingly spacious motel room and planning our last few days here in the South Island before we get the ferry across to the North Island. And to top it all off, the clocks go back an hour here tonight, so we get an extra hour in bed (Solana permitting!).

Aviation Museum & Wine Tour Blenheim

      5. juli 2020, New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

This morning we went to Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. The museum had Sir Peter Jackson’s personal collection of WW1 aircraft and artefacts. Some scenes we saw of the aircraft recreated an incident that actually happened in the war. The detail was incredible.
There was personal items belonging to national flying heroes such as the USA’s Eddie Rickenbacker, France’s René Fonck and Germany’s Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen and the infamous Hermann Goering.

In the afternoon we did a wine tasting tour. It was just the four of us on the tour. We first went to Rock Ferry a small organic vineyard. We tried 5 different wines here. The first was a 2014 Riesling. Ashleigh enjoyed it but I didn't like the acidity aftertaste. We next had a 2019 sauvignon blanc. I enjoyed it, it was fruity, fresh and crisp. I also liked the 2016 pinot noir. I don't normally drink read but this was light and fruity. Unfortunately they don't sell there wine in shops only online.

The next vineyard we went to was the famous Cloudy Bay. Their Sauvignon blanc was one of the best I've had. We tried a few other wines but this one stood out to me.

The last vineyard we went to was Whitehaven. Whitehaven is a family owned business. We enjoyed our wine tasting here. Our favourite was their desert wine. It had lots of flavours and not too sweet.

The wine tour also included going to Makana chocolate factory. You could smell the sweet chocolate as soon as you walked through the door. We could see them making the chocolate through the window. We tried butter chocolate crunch Macadamia and it was delicious. I had to buy some even though it was slightly expensive!

      Blenheim

      18. mars 2023, New Zealand

      Pollard Park

      15. januar, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

I then took a walk back along the river towards the other end of town (near my hostel) to have a look around Pollard Park! It was a lovely setting with a nice river running through the middle. I then refreshed myself for the evening at the hostel before heading out to the Marlborough Public House for an amazing burger!Les mer

      Woodend Gardens & Vineyard

      8. mars, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

This morning, we arrived in Picton on the south island of New Zealand. Woodend Gardens & Vineyard is located in the heart of the Marlborough wine region. The 7 acre garden and 10 acre vineyard of sauvignon blanc grapes are owned and tended by Brian & Margaret Herd. As members of the Marlborough grape growers cooperative, their grapes are combined with the grapes of other family vineyards in the area and shipped to California where the wine is produced and sold under the Cupcake Wines brand. The gardens were beautiful, and the mid-morning tea and fruit bread were delicious!Les mer

      Kekerengu

      8. mars, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

We stopped in the small coastal town of Kekerengu for lunch at "The Store." In spite of the lackluster name, we enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch with fresh meats, salads, beverages, and brownies for dessert. After lunch we enjoyed a relaxing walk along the coastline.Les mer

Harling Park and Wither Hills Farm Park

      15. januar, New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

In summary, Harling Park is a small park containing a pretty Japanese garden. It finds itself next door to one of Blenheim's main attractions, Wither Hills Farm Park. However, when I arrived at Wither Hills, I discovered it had been temporarily shut down a few days ago due to risks of wildfire. Unlikely to cause any problem today as it was very cool and overcast.Les mer

      South Island and new friends!

      25. oktober 2019, New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

The cruise through the Cook Strait was beautiful with clear blue skies and a very calm sea. We had read that this crossing can be quite treacherous and uncomfortable (Janet and John can testify to this) but not today. The ship was busy as this is Labour weekend in NZ with Monday being a bank holiday.
It’s a funny old world. When we first got on board the ship we found a couple of seats and plonked ourselves down. A few moments later another couple asked if the seats opposite us were taken to which we said no and they sat down. After a brief introduction found out they were Jim and Sue from England and in fact from Reigate not fifteen miles away from us. So where are you going to? Marlborough same as us. Where are you staying? Marlborough Vintners, same as us also for two nights. They were being collected from Picton and driven to the hotel whereas we were picking up our rental car and driving ourselves.
When we arrived in Picton we saw this huge cruise ship the same one that was in Wellington the previous day. There was quite a lengthy queue to collect the car and this was due to it being a Bank Holiday weekend and the cruise ship. We were told that the number of passengers and crew on the ship exceeded the population of Picton!
Once we had the car it was a thirty minute drive down to our hotel. The scenery and views here are spectacular. The Marlborough area is the principal area in NZ for wine particularly Sauvignon Blanc and there are many estates with names we are familiar with. Checked into the hotel which has about twenty self contained apartments and drove round to ours where we were greeted by our neighbours - Jim and Sue! They are in the apartment next door.
We have a lot of space in this apartment so are able to get everything unpacked and Jane was able to catch up on the washing before we popped over the road to the Whitehaven estate to taste the Sauvignon Blanc - when in Rome etc...
They have an excellent restaurant here and we were joined by Jim and Sue with the major topic of conversation being where are we going to watch the rugby. The hotel has a small bar but no TV so we finished up all coming back to our room to watch it. In the days leading up to the match there was a lot of confidence here that the All Blacks were going to win whilst recognising that England were a good team. Their view was that if they played as well against England as they had against Ireland it would be a comfortable victory - not so!

      Weiter ab Picton

      4. mai 2023, New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

      9. april 2016, New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C
