      Driving away from bad weather

      27. tammikuuta 2020, Uusi Seelanti ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

It started to rain around 0 o’clock at night.
It was still raining at 8 am and not just a little bit. And unfortunately also into my car 😱😱
Oh my god, I noticed a little bit of water coming in already a few weeks ago but now it’s not a little bit anymore, it’s a lot 😱😬
And for now no end of the rain in sight 😅

Luckily there is like a carport in front of one of the cabins at the campground so I moved my car under the roof to skip some rain for the next 2 hours at least.
Yesterday’s weather forecast showed rain until 10-11 am and then the same like yesterday throughout today. But now the weather forecast is saying rain, a lot of rain for the whole day 😳
And the worst is, that the clouds are hanging so low so you can barely see something at all.

Well, I had breakfast and was then asking the owners of the campground if there is a mechanic in Fox Glacier. Luckily it is so I was driving there and was telling him, what my problem is but he was alone today and had more than enough to do already.
I was spending 30 min thinking about what I gonna do now, staying here or in Franz Josef and hope for better weather later in the afternoon and tomorrow or keep on going towards Hokitika.

I was ending up stopping at every mechanic on the way towards Hokitika but no one even had time to look at it... 😳
      And it was still raining...
I arrived in Hokitika at around 2.30 pm, actually by sunshine!! Shortly before Hokitika, it stopped raining and the sun came out!
And here I finally found a mechanic that could take a look at my car.
But he said this can be a huge effort to find out what’s wrong and expensive as well. He asked for how long I will stay and as it’s only 2 1-2 weeks left he recommended not to dig into the problem. He but some ducktape over the areas that are a problem and said, I should buy one on my own and keep on doing this until it’s time to give the car back and never mention the problem 🙈

Good is also, that I am traveling north towards good weather.
So after a quick stop to fuel up and buy something to eat I kept on driving north for some hours and was, in the end, deciding to stay in Murchison overnight.

I have been traveling this part of the Westcoast already last time I was here so I am not missing anything here.
I only missed the glaciers and Lake Matheson now, but I will anyway need to come back again 😉😊

In Murchison, the weather was really nice and warm. I arrived at 6.30 pm at the campground, quite tired after a long day on the road. So I wanted to get to bed early but was ending up talking to a family from Spain for some hours in the evening.

      Shopping Queen

      30. tammikuuta 2023, Uusi Seelanti

      1. tammikuuta 2020, Uusi Seelanti ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

      DAY FIFTY EIGHT

      10. huhtikuuta, Uusi Seelanti ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Maruia Springs to Murchison. We enjoyed Maruia Springs. What a great idea of Roger's to give ourselves an overnight treat. A camp site, gourmet 3 course dinner for 2, flash breakfast for 2, unlimited use of pools and saunas and nice hot long showers. It was great except for the misty rain which prevented us from walking the nearby tracks. I do want you to notice the beautiful net curtain at the door of the Motorhome in photo 4. On the way to Murchison we stopped at these falls. Not much happening here except I was hoping to go to the Buller Gorge which is close by, as there is an adventure park with walks zip line swing bridge jet boat rides gold panning etc. But due to the weather I think that will be going g on the list for next time. On our walk through town today we saw and heard several Kea. One of them was on a car having a peck at the wipers. Naughty boyLue lisää

      Murchison

      11. helmikuuta 2019, Uusi Seelanti ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

The gorge at Hokitika was reached after a short journey from our campsite inland toward the mountains. Unfortunately we could not see the main standing stones in the gorge as some of the track was shut off for maintenance. The water was however very turquoise and milky with the dust and minerals from the mountains. The water is predominantly melt water from the glacier and was very cold -two hardy chaps plunged in while we were there but they did not stay in long. Karen dipped her toe in which was enough.
After that we travelled to Punakaiki along the scenic Greytown to Westport Road. The road hugs the shoreline for much of the way squeezed between the mountains on one side and the sea. The beaches did not look too inviting with grey shingle, they are more popular to surfers.
The shoreline at Punakaiki is renowned for its particular rock formations - the Pancake Rocks. We took a short walk to see them which was worthwhile, and were entranced by a pod of about 30 dolphins who were feeding and playing in the sea immediately behind the formations and within the adjacent bay. We had not seen a dolphin surfing a wave until today - it appeared to be having great fun.
We arrived late afternoon at Murchison, a farming community in the hills. The site we are at is next to the river, and after a bbq dinner in the camp kitchen we plunged into the river swim hole to cool off as the afternoon temperatures were very hot. The water was lovely - refreshing but not too cold, and so clear. What a fabulous spot for a campsite, and excellent facilities. The reviews on Tripadviser were spot on - a real gem of a site!!!

      Murcheson

      30. lokakuuta 2016, Uusi Seelanti ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Stayed overnight at the Riverview Camp gound. Wondered around Murchison around lunch time. Not much open on a Sunday. Filled up with fuel and parked up to have lunhc at the Commercial Hotel in town. Had a great steak sandwhich and chips. Went onto the van park and got a spot for the night. The van park was located near the town cemetery and by a river. The river was lovely but too cold to swim in.
Next day Clint and I left the others as they went onto Nelson. We took a jet boat ride on the Buller river. We also had a go at the cable harness ride across the gorge. We had to walk across a long suspention bridge to get to both the cable ride and the jet boat. All great things to do.
Once we finished at the canyon we went back into town and had a pie from the blue tea shop. These were homemade and bloody beautiful.

Sea kayaking im Abel Tasman Nationalpark

      3. helmikuuta 2017, Uusi Seelanti ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C
