Leaving Nicaragua

This morning our alarms went off early to catch the 6:45am ferry leaving Ometepe for mainland Nicaragua.

We had to get up early as despite our trip being only 4.5 hours (direct, on paper) to La Fortuna in Costa Rica, we might have to take up to 5 buses (plus a ferry, taxis and tuktuk) with no set timetable. So we thought best to start early to ensure we make it!

First up was a tuktuk from our hostel to the ferry terminal, then the ferry to the mainland, a taxi to the bus terminal and a chicken bus to the border.

Whilst we were on the bus it started lashing down, the first proper rain we've seen. We thought this made for a nice change until we remember that our bags were chained to the roof of the bus, without their waterproof covers. So when we arrived at the border, they were a little wet. Hey ho, a mistake we won't make again.

This would also be the first border we would cross on foot without the help of a shuttle or coach!Read more

Grenzübergang Nicaragua - Costa Rica

Mit Ticabus habe ich mich heute auf den Weg zurück nach Costa Rica gemacht. Diese Grenze war schon bei der Einreise spannend, deshalb dachte ich mir, sie ist ein Footprint wert.
Erst einmal muss man einen Zettel ausfüllen mit allen Personenbezogenen Daten ( Ausweisnummer, usw.). Dieser wird dann eingesammelt und an der Grenze abgegeben. Am Grenzübergang gibt es weitere 4 Stationen zu meistern. Als erstes kommt ein freundlicher Polizist, er kontrolliert die Pässe auf den Einreisestempel. Dann darf der Bus weiter fahren, bis zur Immigration hier werden stichprobenartig Pässe einbehalten, natürlich meiner auch. Alle müssen aussteigen und ihr Gepäck zur Kontrolle bringen. Mit mulmigen Gefühl und ohne Pass geht's weiter zum Schalter, hier müssen 3$ Ausreisegebühr bezahlt werden und ich hab meinen Pass wieder. Jetzt haben wir es aus Nicaragua geschafft, bevor wir zurück in den Bus dürfen wird noch Mal der Pass kontrolliert und wir fahren weiter zur Grenze von Costa Rica. 200m später müssen wir wieder alle samt Gepäck raus und offiziell in Costa Rica einreisen. Man wird gefragt ob man eine Bleibe hat und wie lange man bleiben möchte. Einige mussten einen Ausreisenachweis vorzeigen, zb Flug, Zug, oder Busticket. Kurz danach sind wir wieder alle im Bus und es geht weiter 5h nach San Jose.Read more

Exit Nicaragua

The process of leaving Nicaragua.
First you pull up and get an exit slip that you need to fill in.
Whilst getting the slip you're harassed by loads of local fixers trying to help you, but once you drive off to the building they leave you alone.

First off, you go into immigration where you need to pay $1 per a person to enter? Then you go to the immigration booth and have to pay $3 per person to exit the country. Here they will only take USD and not their local currency which is weird considering we aren't bordering a country which spends USD (officially) at all.

After your exit stamp is given you need to go to a vehicle inspection booth. You hand them your paper work to exit, and they come and check your vehicle. The guy didn't like that we had a dash camera and kept covering it with his finger. We were asked at least two times if we had a drone. "no".

After they sign this paper work, it's into the customs building to get the temporary import permit cancelled. Unfortunately we got into the line with about a dozen people in front of us. Everything so far had taken 20 minutes but here we'd spend an hour. Fortunately @overlandsite had arrived at the border and joined the line a little behind us, so we could chat as we went through. This customs booth was for both people processing temporary import permits to enter Nicaragua as well as exit which is what held us up.

Finally paper work all cancelled, it is time to drive across into Costa Rica and pick up their process to enter.Read more

In San José war ich nur, da der Flug nach Costa Rica um einiges günstiger war als direkt nach Nicaragua zu fliegen.

So machte ich mich am Freitag auf die schlussendlich 11 stündige Reise nach San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua.
Der Bus war ziemlich komfortabel und auch der Grenzübergang ging fix. Lustigerweise muss man in Costa Rica $8 für die Ausreise und in Nicaragua $13 für die Einreise bezahlen.
Der Bus ging nicht direkt nach San Juan del Sur und so musste ich in Rivas auf den öffentlichen Bus, den Chicken Bus, umsteigen. Alte amerikanisch Schulbusse, die so genannt werden, weil darin allerlei transportiert wird - unter anderem auch Hühner. Mein grosser Rucksack ging oben aufs Dach und ja, er kam also auch in San Juan del Sur an. Heiss, voll, günstig und spannend war die Fahrt :)

San Juan del Sur ist unter den Backpackern bekannt. Man kann hier Party
machen und surfen und deshalb ist es ein beliebter Spot. Ich bin mässig begeistert, irgendwie passt mir die Stimmung nur bedingt, doch zum Surfen war es gut.

Mein Hostel war glücklicherweise etwas ausserhalb des Trubels. Dennoch waren hier ganz viel junge und partyfreudige Gäste. Glücklicherweise verliessen viele das Hostel nach zwei Tagen und neue Gäste kamen nach, die weniger in Partystimmung waren.

Ich hatte zwei gute Surftage und genoss die etwas sanfteren Wellen hier im Vergleich zu Ayampe.
