🌙 NC500 Overnight Climate – Living Inside Vanilla

The NC500 isn’t just a road trip — it’s a whole way of living, especially at night. Once the engine is switched off and the Highland silence takes over, Vanilla becomes a tiny home on wheels. That’s when the real test comes: how warm it feels, how damp the air is, whether the windows mist up, and whether sleep comes easy.

To make sense of it, I’ve been logging two simple things between 9 pm and 7 am:
• Temperature: how warm or cold the air inside the cab is, measured in °C. Think of it as the basic “feel” of the night — whether you’re peeling off layers or pulling the duvet up to your chin.
• Humidity: how much water vapour is in the air, measured in %. High humidity (say 70%) makes the air feel damp, heavy, and more likely to mist the windows. Low humidity (40–50%) feels drier, fresher, and more comfortable for breathing.

Together, temperature and humidity decide how the night feels inside Vanilla — from snug and cosy to cool and clammy. Here’s what the first few nights on the NC500 have been like.

🌌 Night of Monday 22nd September – A Warm Embrace
The first night was shockingly warm for late September in the Highlands. Temperatures inside Vanilla stayed between 19.6 °C and 23.7 °C, averaging a toasty 22.5 °C. That’s the kind of temperature you’d expect in a hotel room, not a van parked in Scotland.

Humidity floated between 55% and 64% (averaging 58%). At that level, the air feels balanced — not bone-dry like central heating, not clammy like a damp tent. It was comfortable enough to sleep without worrying about misty windows or sticky bedding. For a first night on the road, it felt like Vanilla was spoiling me with her own little microclimate.

🌌 Night of Tuesday 23rd September – Steady Comfort
The second night was much the same, just slightly cooler. The cab sat between 19.8 °C and 22.4 °C, averaging 21.5 °C. Still warm enough to sleep without shivering, but not as hot as the night before.

Humidity was steady at 54–59%, averaging 56%. That’s the sweet spot where the air doesn’t feel heavy and your breathing feels effortless. It’s the kind of overnight climate where you drift off without noticing it, and you wake up without the van feeling stuffy.

🌌 Night of Wednesday 24th September – The Highland Chill Arrives
This was the turning point. The cab cooled dramatically overnight, dipping as low as 13.4 °C and never climbing higher than 17.3 °C. The average was a brisk 16.1 °C. That’s when you really feel the Highland autumn — the chill that makes you want to tuck deeper into your sleeping bag or duvet.

Humidity shot up, hovering between 63% and 72%, averaging 68%. That meant the air felt damp, heavy, and close — the kind of moisture that clings to your clothes and fogs up the windscreen. It was a reminder that no matter how insulated the van is, the Highlands always creep in. That night, Vanilla felt less like a sealed cabin and more like part of the landscape itself, breathing in the cool, wet air from outside.

🌌 Night of Thursday 25th September – A Softer Balance
After the damp chill of the night before, things steadied again. Temperatures ranged from 16.9 °C to 20.8 °C, averaging 18.4 °C. It was cooler than the start of the week, but nowhere near as biting as the 24th.

Humidity sat between 59% and 68%, averaging 64%. Still moist, still Highland-heavy, but without the oppressive dampness of the previous night. It was the kind of balance that makes sleeping in a campervan feel comfortable again — cool enough to breathe fresh, but not so damp that you’re battling condensation on every surface.

✨ What the Numbers Mean in Practice
• 20+ °C with humidity in the 50s (first two nights): warm, easy sleeping conditions. It feels like staying in a well-heated room — cosy without being stifling.
• 16 °C with humidity near 70% (third night): cool and damp. That’s when the van feels more like a stone bothy by the sea — you sense the moisture, and the night air feels close and heavy.
• 18 °C with humidity mid-60s (fourth night): a happy medium. Fresh but not freezing, moist but not clammy. Exactly what you’d hope for in the Highlands.

Each night has carried its own personality: a tropical start, a steady second, a damp Highland shock, and finally a gentle return to balance. It’s a reminder that on this road, you’re not just travelling through landscapes — the landscapes travel into the van with you.

The thermometer and humidity sensor are more than gadgets. They’ve become a second set of eyes, showing me how the Highlands breathe through the night, even when Vanilla’s doors are closed.
