    Helmsley to High Paradise Farm

    September 4, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

This terrain was definitely an enjoyable and pleasant way to start this walk. The main prize was panoramic views over the vales and plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the views. Sheep and peasants are aplenty albeit a few of the peasants didn’t survive something. At tonight’s accommodation now- glad to get the boots off and rest the feet. Phone is playing up so route not mapped correctly. ps next time bring bucket hat, sunscreen and long sleeve shirt.Read more

    Paradise Farm to Cote Ghyll

    September 5, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Leisurely morning today as we had to wait for the farm shop to open to get breakfast. The nearest stop is 10 miles away so fuel for the body is a must. The walk is more taxing due to the heat than anything. There was a welcome breeze at 1300ft and some woodland shaded areas. Roger has blisters forming so slow and steady is the plan for today.
We met Avril again today and stopped for a chat. Interesting lady. Now we are inside the pub (560 ft) with ice cold cokes 🧋Our campsite is only a mile further on so this is us for today else we would need to cover another 10 miles or so before coming to the next village with no guarantee of food or lodgings.

    Chop Gate to Gt Alton

    September 7, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Left the inn and enjoyed the cool morning air as we walked up hill to join the Cleveland track. Thankfully it took a few hours for the haze to burn off so we managed to clock up a good few miles before the full sun caught up with us. We met a semi-local walker and enjoyed his company and local knowledge before he pushed on. Today’s break stops were at tall stones, behind a wall and in the forest. Each providing welcome shade from the sun. On our final descent we came upon a farm shop so stopped for ice creams and another opportunity to remove the boots. I’m the village now at eatery called The Poorhouse, great spot for coffee, cider and pizza 😊😊Read more

    Gt Alton to Saltburn-By-The-Sea

    September 8, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Left this morning feeling great with fresh clothes and new glasses 🤓. A quick stop at Captain Cooke monument then off again. Pretty steep climb rewarded with stunning views particularly of misty top roseberry topping hill. The mist created a fantastic photo opportunity so much so that we had to stop looking and crack on.
Further along the route we met a lady Zoe and her dog Poppy, very friendly and chirpy lady. We bopped in and out of each other’s company before walking the final hour or so together into Saltburn.
Great seaside vibe here albeit so much sea fog we couldn’t see the sea 😱 We finished the day with a walk along the promenade, chips at the pier and a beer at The Sitting Room. We could easily spend a few days here 😊😊😊

    Saltburn to Runswick Bay

    September 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Sat by the sea and had coffee and croissants for breakfast before climbing one of the many step ascents today.
Whilst the views were stunning the temperature was at its highest this week and there was next to no breeze. At each top we took off our boots and socks to cool our feet off and sat smugly appreciating our achievements.
The breeze and shaded areas were a pleasant contrast to the hot sun and many offered opportunities to chat to fellow walkers, many walking sections of the CW but only carrying day sacks.
The descent into Striats was a bit of a surprise as it’s a bustling village with quaint cobbled narrow streets. We didn’t stop here, would probably have struggled to get started again as the only way was up, up and up. Definitely worth a visit by car one day. The final decent brought us to Runswick and the Bay hotel. Here we we’re delighted to have bagged beautifully decorated bedroom, airy and spacious. Laundry now hanging off the four poster to dry as much as possible. Fish dinner awaits 😋. All in all a rewarding day

    Runswick to Whitby

    September 9, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌩️ 19 °C

Today’s route began with a short downhill walk, followed with a beach walk then a fairly steep climb. Having began feeling refreshed (including our clothes) we soon began to overheat in the morning sun. We crossed through farmland, cows and sheep taking it easy in the hot sun. Roger began to recognise some of the places from 40 years ago including the old railway tunnel. Unfortunately it is blocked off but it did provide cooling airflow 😀.

With 5 or so miles to go we stop of at Sandsend for lunch, pretty little garden coffee shop for coffee, sandwiches and coke - need the sugar fix.

We’ve climbed uphill now to the hostel/abbey. Weather has now changed, cool air and rain. Sitting in the hostel cafe now planning tomorrow’s route and deciding which of the weather apps is most accurate. I like the one where the rain holds off until after 18:00 😀😀

  • Day 8

    Whitby to Staintondale

    September 11, 2023 in England ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Breakfast in the hostel this morning then onward bound. Forecast for rain around 15:00 today plus we need to break today’s leg into two as it’s too far to walk to Scarborough, explore and enjoy it. So we have found a campsite at a place called Staintondale and booked a little glamping pod for the night.

So the campsite was a couple of miles of the track, making our way through a few fields, feasting on blackberries and getting our legs battered by briars we eventually got here.
It’s a great wee spot, there’s a shower ‘block’ (with a kettle). So we used this luxury kettle to cook our dinner rather than using our stove. True to form it did rain so we sat indoors at our table /bed looking out. Next we decided on a ‘movie night’ so we made the bed up and sat for a couple of hours with me holding up my iPhone as we watched Manifest on Netflix 😄😄

Need to add that we didn’t have any towels so we had to wash with a sock and dry off with a neck buff 🤣 don’t really recommend but it did the job.

  • Day 9

    Staintondale to Filey

    September 12, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

And then we were done 😲
We left the campsite this morning under a rain cloud that followed us along the route. Despite this we did see some dramatic views but it was too wet to do anything other than plough on. No stopping for coffee, water, admiring the views, chatting to people or cooling the feet - this meant we arrived in Scarborough in super quick time.
We are staying in the Grand Hotel tonight - once the tallest hotel in Europe. Steeped in history and eyed up by Hitler for his base. Anyway it’s only 11:00 and way too early to check in and to wet to do much so we decided to have an early lunch, drop our bags off in the luggage room and crack on to Filey (making it a 25 mile walking day 😱).
So that’s what we did, the rain eased off a bit but no photo stops until we got to the end. In Filey now, walked to the taxi rank beside the train station and got a taxi to Helmsley to get our car then drove back to Scarborough to enjoy the evening in the Grand 😀😀
Check out the pic of the staircase- designed that the ladies in their finery plus there escorts can walk past another couple without touching x
