      Changi Museum & DFO’s

      22. syyskuuta 2023, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

A bit of a journey on trains and a bus, through some more suburban?? Singapore, to read of the dark times for POW’s under the Japanese occupation in WWII.
Many who served for the freedom of others.
An extended lunch at the Bark Cafe while Steve and Optus discussed Kay’s phone 📱 and the rain came down. Then some wandering and shopping at the DFO. Kay had a tinkle on one of many pianos we have seen in public places.

      Last day in Singapore

In the morning, we took a quick dip in the pool and then went out for breakfast. Since my flip-flops gave in, we went to buy Crocs. They're quite the thing here and quite fashionable. I'm curious to see how they'll be judged back in Switzerland 😆 hoping for some funny jokes 🥸

After that, we took the subway to Sentosa Island. It's impressive how big the park is and all the activities you can do. But we decided to take it easy and just stroll around a bit.

Even though our flight is at 9:00 in the evening, we arrived at the airport almost 4 hours early. Not because we're scaredy-cats, but because the airport in Singapore has so much to offer.

Now, we're about to board the plane to Cebu (Philippines).

      C U 😎

      Day 105 - Home!

      21. joulukuuta 2023, Singapore ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

We’re back home after our amazing 104 days adventure. We crammed a lot in, with so much to see and do everywhere. So, we are now looking forward to a bit more of a relaxing time at home before heading back to work in January. We’ve had 4 months of temperatures between 25 and 32C, and no rain until we reached the bottom half of Malaysia and Singapore when we hit the monsoon, so the weather at home is going to be a bit of a shock.

Here’s our overall summary of the Asia section (see Day 35 for a similar summary for Spain). Overall, our main achievements were cycling 900kms of the Camino Frances and successfully getting around Asia with no major mishaps and no significant stomach issues.

-Best scenery = Petra (Jordan), Bhutan (the mountains, plus the buildings and the national dress), the islands of Thailand (Koh Kood, Krabi) and Northern Malaysia (Langkawi)

-New experiences = Snorkelling amongst the coral, paddle boarding, jungle trekking, floating in the Dead Sea, feeding elephants, astronomy, pottery, getting tailor made shirts, seeing lots of new wildlife (especially monkeys and birds, but sadly no wild tigers), staying in a jungle hut in Koh Kood (“It’s like stepping into the set of Avatar”)

-Various man-made wonders visited = Petra, Taj Mahal, Burj Khalifa, Petronas Towers, Marina Bay

-Best activities = Feeding the elephants at Kanchanaburi; 9 days of motor biking around the twisty roads of Bhutan (with only one 5 mile section of straight road); Jaipur bike tour; exploring unspoilt Koh Kood on scooters

-Most challenging place = India (poverty, air pollution, rubbish everywhere, failing infrastructure, chaotic driving, overloaded tuktuks, dodgy safety practices and behaviours, constant hassle and moral blackmail, constant beeping horns!)

-Friendliest people = Bhutanese who have really taken Buddhism as a way of life

-Best accommodation = Dubai (apartment overlooking the Marina), Ranthamborne Regency in India (a step back into colonial times), Baan Bua Cottages on Koh Kood.
-Worst hotel = New Delhi airport hotel (collapsed bed and dirty, despite it’s 9.0 rating score).
-Cheapest hotel = £7.50 per night per person at Satun (unplanned stop following missed ferry); Best value for money accommodation = Kuala Lumpar apartment at £90 for four people for 2 nights; Most expensive hotel = Singapore Citadines Connect.

-Best food = Jordan (hummus, salads, fruit juices, chicken shawarma, and baklava) and Thailand (spring rolls, red and green curry, and sweet and sour fish)
-Cheapest meal = £10 (including drinks) for four in central Kuala Lumpar. Followed a few days later by our meal at Clarke Quay in Singapore which was about 20 times that amount.
-Most expensive drink = £30 for a Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel in Singapore

-Longest travel day = Penang to Kuala Lumpar (ferry, train, replacement bus, train, taxi). 12 hours to do 200 miles

-Incidents = Losing two credit cards, and turning up at a ferry crossing when the ferry wasn’t due for another 20 hours

      Also:
-Best buy = Noise cancelling headphones
-Noisiest animal = The shrill insects of Koh Kood (cicadas)
-Best road signs = Bhutan (No Hurry No Worry)
-Fastest tuk tuks = Bangkok (Had to cling on for dear life as our driver raced through the traffic overtaking everything. He dishevel slow down when we passed an overturned tuk tuk)
-Biggest kerbs = Jordan, but an issue over most of Asia.
And lots of other things we've probably forgotten. Also great to have been joined by Abi and Mike, and Chris and Paula (in Spain) for parts of the adventure.

      Until next time .....

      In the air tonight

      11. syyskuuta 2019, Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

No, nothing to do with Phil Collins, everything to do with a night on an A380 in Premium Economy class.

This has been my best long haul flight ever. We left Zurich at about noon, on a 12 hour flight to Singapore. With 6hrs time zone shift, we arrive about 6am. Two thirds of the trip is in darkness.

It's been several years since I've been on an A380 and the first time in Premium Economy. Why premium? For some unknown reason, when I was booking, premium economy was cheaper than standard economy.

Premium economy on the Singapore Airlines A380 is at the pointy end of the lower deck, well before the noisy bit. With noise reducing headphones issued, wider seats and oodles of leg and knee room, this was a very smooth and comfortable ride. You almost forget you're on a plane except for some turbulence off the east coast of India that almost spilled my drink. There's also priority check in, more choice of meals and your luggage gets out quicker at the other end.

Of course, business class or first class would be better but that will have to wait until I win lotto.

      Vol Singapour-Kuala Lumpur

      22. marraskuuta 2019, Singapore ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

      On the way again

      4. joulukuuta 2019, Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Today is my last day in Singapore. I woke up quite late so I didn’t plan something big before I need to go to the airport.
That was actually the best decision I could make! It’s extremely hot outside today and I got really problems with the heat and moisture out there.
So I just went to the river and was sitting there in the shadow and reading a bit until it was time to grab some lunch and go back to the hostel to pick up my backpack and take the train to the airport. Luckily the air condition in the train was working perfectly 😅
After I checked in I took a walk through the airport but was ending up by my beloved foot massage as always 😊
This time icky with Air New Zealand to Auckland!

      Layover at Changi International Airport

      30. marraskuuta 2019, Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

After a painful 12.5 hour flight, we finally landed in Changi International Airport, Singapore for a short layover before our flight to Koh Samui, Thailand! We both definitely needed a shot of espresso to keep us awake and definitely a good couple of hours to walk and stretch! Paras was literally sleep walking through the airport!

Changi Airport is absolutely stunning, with beautiful gardens & waterfalls within the airport! An absolute state of art! The airport was huge and super clean!

With paras absolutely detesting coffee but requiring some form of energy boost, we found a cute little juice bar close to our gate. There, I got him a large energising juice full of B vitamins and C vitamins.

After out 3 hour layover in Singapore, we headed to the gate to catch our flight to Koh Samui, Thailand via Silk Air.

      Zwischenziel Singapur

      23. maaliskuuta 2020, Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C
