      Into the wild - Hluhluwe

      January 5, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Sleeping in a tent is not only in Switzerland an experience, it is a nice way to experience the wilderness of South Africa, but it gets even more exiting when the host tells you that there is a leopard striving around at night 😲

Close by in St. Lucia we also did a hippo tour. In the mangroves they are used to the boats and you can get as close as possible.

With a brief souvenir/fruit stop before heading south to Durban our Nationalpark visit ended.

      Phinda Private Game Drive

      April 2, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We were all up at 6am today for what should have been an early start. Unfortunately Pete had got the times wrong and the cheetah rehabilitation centre he thought opened at 8:30am didn’t actually open until 10:30am, something we didn’t find out until we were on the road.
Pieter said no worries and we’ll take the game drive route through Phinda Private Game reserve. This is exactly the same road we took the other day when we saw the baby rhino.
The guy at the security gate took our names and car registration and then let us through. It was still early and just 25°c so relatively cool for South African standards.
Straight away we spotted a big herd of Imyala, then we saw warthogs with there babies running along the edge of the road. Impala’s were everywhere as normal but they are always nice to see as they look so pretty. Then we spotted an African banded Snake Eagle which was amazing and I even managed to get it in flight.
A few miles down the road we came to hundreds of Zebra, with a few wilderbeast dotted inbetween. They really were everywhere.
Then just before we came to the exit we spotted more wilderbeast and in the back were 4 rhino. It was an amazing drive and we’ve been so lucky with seeing rhino on this trip, that’s 8 in 7 days.
We left the private game drive at 10am and then it was just a 30 minute drive to our stop of the day.

      Day 7 After school club

      August 3, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

What's been nice on this trip is observing the interaction between the families themself, which has been amazing. They all just get stuck in there and the children you can see have loved every minute of it. Especially Ashton and Lizzy they love playing with the little children.
To day is the After School Club
After a not so sure start at Mdinwa school the team absolutely loved it and asked when are we going back.
Sometimes pulling teams of the build is like pulling teeth...lol
But it's great to show them all how embedded into the community the CoCos Foundation is. Thank you Vamsile our Sewing Lady for all that you do and have done to make the Clothes4Clothes project run so much more smoothly.

      Breakfast Club at Mdnwima

      April 20, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

When you write a blog at the end of a day you have the fortune of looking back on the whole day.
The day starts at 5am early early. ready to take the volunteers to the Breakfast club at Mndiwa school. The journey down is a little quieter than normal as the volunteers catch up on some sleep.
As we enter the school gates Musa our ground worker is there waiting for us. We park the car under the tree and make our way to the ladies that are mixing the porridge.
This school is a special place for us as it's the first place we started our feeding program and thousands of children have benefited from that one meal a day.
Stand with the children as they sift into school and make their way over to the ladies to collect their bowl is very humbling.
I notice Jade one of the volunteers has a tear rolling down her cheek. So walk over and whisper in her ear. Walk with me. Often Volunteers get up set for many reason on a trip with what they see or hear. But a walk and a chat often puts things in prospective.
After the Breakfast Club we are off to paint a house that wasn't done in 2020 for the Girl Guides. The first challenge of the day is there is no water. So Nkosie chats to the two now teenage boys and asks where we can get water from. They respond saying about 10mins away in a local pond. So a few of us crab some buckets and of we March following the Boys in a line like the 7 dwarfs. Hi Ho hi Ho it's of to work we go..........
20 mins later I realise this is an African 10 minutes. Jane keeps letting us know how far it is has her watch tracks everything...lol
We finally get there and the boys wade in and fill up the buckets 🪣 Now for the walk home this is going to hurt. But then you realise your doing this once they do this every day twice a day. So shut up Chris and crack on ....🙄
The team really know what they are doing now and crack on.

      The BIG Build Day 2

      April 18, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

Muma (GoGo) Debs is up early with preparing the team Breakfast then I making sure all the bags are loaded with what we will need for the day.
Today the team work equally as hard as yesterday. Brick after brick the house grows in hight and our three builders quietly support the volunteers.
At 11am we have to visit one of the After School Clubs that we support at Mndiwa. This is where all the children that are orphaned meet generally after school, but today it's in school time at 11am.
The school like Africa have huge challenges and in the 13yrs that I have been coming out here no more than now are things really hard on local rural communities. The government are steeling so much money from the local communities that now the schools don't have any food to give the children. When we arrive it's one of the first things the children ask for food. As many of them would not have eaten. One of the volunteers has a wobble, food for all of us is life but this volunteer as a marathon runner she really understands the energy that food gives you for the day. We sit on a big pipe and talk it through with the possibility of their salon raising a monthly food parcel. Jane has a little more of a smile on her face. Has we rejoin the team. Before the day is over one more thing I that is a must do and that is visit Lindani's mum. The lady with the big smile and always make me feel welcome.

      Day 3

      July 30, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Day 3 is alway a little easier. Nkosie was up and out of the house for his morning run and loved it, down to the beach and back again.
I waited in for the man that was delivering Den's bag (correction, family bag) from Durban airport. He arrived nice and early which made Den happy.
To day we visit houses that we have already built and visit Siyabonga and his brothers house that Geoff and Ruth donated.
The first house was the house that the April team built and they were so pleased to see us. Grandpa was still alive and well which was great to see and GoGo gave me a huge hug 🤗. It's warms the heart to see the families up lifted.
The second house was the house that this group were supposed to build in 2020 but covid put a stop to that.
I had printed and framed a photo of for the family to give to the Auntie. It was special this house has I had promised GoGo that I would build a house for her Grandchildren and the she passed away with Covid before it was possible. The house did get built and the promised did get kept. The photo had GoGo in it so the family were so happy.
The 3rd house we visited was Siyabonga's house. Anybody who knows the foundation from the start know the journey of theses boys and the challenges they have faced. Today we visited the new house that had been built by our local builders and donated by Papa Smurf and Grandma Smurf, Geoff and Ruth.
Jack one of the volunteers had brought a drone with him. So we took some amazing videos of the house and the area so Geoff and Ruth could see it.
With the job completed. It was of to Hluhluwe to buy the boys the essentials, like plates, bowls and knifes and folks. Siya walk round the shop it was like supermarket sweep.....
I said to Siya to slow down. His response was. "But Chrrrris I only see you once a year....😀

      Sodwana Bay Foundation Lodge

      January 18, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ 🌬 29 °C

Little Foundation is a beautiful traditional Roundval house which I call my African home.
Waking up there hearing the sea 🌊 in the distance and the birds in the trees is a sound I always look forward to coming to South Africa.
To day is going to be a beautiful busy one.
We have all the houses that we are going to be building in 2023 as a charity to visit and check that the families are happy with them been completed. The first stop though is the house that donated by Moon Hall school in Dorking. I take a little video to be able to show the children of Moon Hall. The little girl that lives there is so happy and keeps looking at me. I'm sure she wonders, who is this strange man. We are so proud to be carrying out the work for many schools and community groups.
Then the rest of the day is spent visiting all the families that we will be building houses for this year 2023. 8 of them.....
For many reason this is such a hard day as we do not have enough money to build them all. But Witt a lot of networking and public speaking upon my return we hope to be able to raise the funds.

      2nd Community Day

      April 16, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

On the road again this morning visiting the houses that we have built in the past. To date we have built 67 houses of which Mildred donate a house from one GoGo to another GoGo in 2015. Today is about showing the volunteers what they are aiming to build and complete over the next seventeen days. It's also about showing Geoff and Ruth Mums house. Has we pull into Mildred's house there is confusion to start with. A big van with a load of people turning up is not a usual event around here. Has soon as the van door is opened and Nkosie explains who we are there is great rejoice.
Ruth finally get to me the family but the GoGo is away tending her garden 🪴 we will have to pop back...lol
The second visit is the House that Jades Dad built Paul In 2013.
When we area the young boy Alasanda is also not there but Jade gets to see the House. We make our way back home popping into see the Family that Debs sponsors in particular the brother of Nontobeko, Enelle.
Home time and time to go to the beach before dinner.

      Sodwana Bay Beach

      April 4, 2023 in South Africa ⋅ 🌬 26 °C

We had a great nights sleep last night due to the fact we both took our American sleeping pills because they are full of antihistamine and we both had really itchy bites.
Our plans for today were to let Pete do some emailing of clients this morning while Ellie and I caught up on things at home and then later this afternoon we would go kayaking. Unfortunately the day didn’t run like that because from the moment we got up there was no phone signal or internet and to top it off it was windy, so no kayaking.
Pete was running around frantically by 10am trying to get a phone signal upstairs and downstairs but it was patchy at best and at 11am he said he needed tobacco so would we like a drive to Sodwana Bay and have a look at the beach and of course we obliged.
We took Karin down the sandy roads, through the river and then into town picking up a young girl hitchhiker on the way and dropping her off at the same shop we went to.
The first shop didn’t have what Pete wanted so we went to a second which did have it and then we carried on out of town and down a beautiful country road towards the beach.
We passed hundreds of little stalls at the side of the road selling intricate wooden carvings and hand made baskets and mats then we came to a small security post just before the beach.
The security post was to check the car for alcohol as no alcohol is allowed on the beach and also if we didn’t have the rhino card it would have cost R175 for the car and an extra R75 each. Pete said the place used to be packed this time of the year but since they have started charging it is a lot quieter and now only the people with boats go because you can drive on the beach.
Our first stop was the supermarket at the very end of the road, where we stocked up on the essentials of coffee and bread and a few vegetables then it was back in Karin and back the way we came towards the beach.
On the road halfway back we spotted a bright green snake heading towards the wooded area, it was about 1.5 meters long and exactly the same colour as grass on a summers day. It was a green mamba, very dangerous and if it was in the grass or on a tree you would never spot it.
We parked Karin up in the sandy car park and then walked over the sand dunes to the beach. It was a crazy sight of about 30 4x4 all parked up in a row just above the high water mark and various ribbed boats either on the water or sitting at the waters edge with a big tractor and trailer up the other end waiting for the business of either launching or recovery.
We turned right as Pete said there was a waterside restaurant and to get to it we had to wade knee dip in the fresh water river that was running out of the national park and into the sea.
The restaurant was a nice little place that was fairly quiet for a lunchtime and we found a table and ordered orange juice for everyone and some food as we’d all skipped breakfast.
Then it was back to Karin and back home where Pete finally had a signal and could finish his work while Ellie and I chilled in our room for an hour.
