While John waited at the laundromat for our clothes to finish the wash cycle this afternoon in Oviedo, I went around the corner for a beer. (I know, but John doesn’t drink beer.)

I was sitting at a small table. Out of the blue, a blue parakeet fell onto my table! Like, out of the sky/ceiling! I gently scooped it up in my hands, snd everyone in the bar — two men, the lady behind the bar, her little girl, and another woman all gathered around. I asked if it belonged to anyone — “No!”

So of course I put it into the hands of a very excited little girl. I went back to my beer, but moments later, the bird flew away from the little girl and landed right back into my hands! Well, this time they found a box for it. The men at the bar were quite excited about the whole scene and when they found out I’m a pilgrim, they insisted on buying my beer. What a strange scene! And John missed it!

But at least I got a picture —

    Pola de Lena To Oviedo

    San Salvador Camino Completed!

The last day of the Camino, and one of the most broootal.

We were eager to finish off today, so we decided to walk the 34 kilometres to Oviedo. Juan was so eager he woke at 5:00am to get going. I did’t leave until 7:00.

The first stretch to the town of Mieres, was pretty easy going along pedestrian walkways. I arrived there at 10:00. I thought the rest of the day would be a breeze.

There are two hills to go up and down to Oviedo. The first is not well marked. I ended up going down a muddy trail into the middle of a forest. Totally lost, and because it was also a misty rainy day, I could not see the sun. I ended up using my phone to navigate out. About 5 to 8 wasted kilometers.

After surviving this, I found flechas again. Now the only thing between me and Oviedo was one more mountain.

I arrived in Oviedo at around 5:00 that evening. Juan had arrived only 1 hour sooner.

After finding a hostel, we went out to drink the local cider to celebrate the end of the San Salvador Camino.

Tomorrow I will receive my compestela document!

    Oviedo memories

    June 10, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Walking to the bus station I went past the Woody Allen statue and remembered being here with Joe and my parents. This picture is for you dad. 😍

And now I'm at the bus station waiting for the bus to the airport and remembered when David got off the bus from Cangas here, and we had a grand time together. Love you guys.Read more

    Oviedo and beyond

    September 27, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Transiting through the beautiful city of Oviedo en route to Leon. Stopped off at Oviedo Cathedral for a stamp (sello) in my pilgrims credential. It's where I flew out when I'd finished the first half of my Camino (St Jean Pied de Port to Leon). So now two stamps a year apart. Onwards to Santiago.Read more
