      Estella to Los Arcos

      21 KMs does not sound too far, but with temperatures pushing the low 30s it can be energy sapping. Luckily we had cloud cover for much of the day. We arrived in Los Arcos, where we found a lovely Albergue called Casa del la Abuela. Great banta between the manager and an Englishman about Euro finals tonight.

      Awesome views across fields of wheat and grapes becoming more prevalent as we get closer to the wine growing region of Rioja.

      A few old ruins passed by today and lovely wee villages we passed through. Hard to fathom just how old some of these buildings are and the history behind them.

      Very much a farming area with wide open spaces. Loved catching up with other Pilgrims all day and having a few laughs along the way.      Read more

      Immer wieder sehen wir die gelbe Muschel rechts oder links in einen kleinen Weg deuten. Pferde und Esel auf einer Wiese, eins trägt eine Glocke, die mit jeder Bewegung läutet.

      Graffitis an verlassenen Mauern, alte Kirchen auf den Wiesen, in den Dörfern, auf Hügeln. Auf einer Bank sitzt ein alter Spanier, gewichtig trägt sich das Gepäck vorne und hinten. Neben ihm ein drahtiger, schlankerer Mann, der sich mit einem Handschlag verabschiedet.

      In einer Kurve auf der einsamen Straße warte ich auf ihn. Er arbeite als Taxifahrer, seine englische Frau habe ihn sozusagen auf die Straße gesetzt, damit er wieder mal was Sinnvolles tut. Er sei auf der fünften Etappe, aber erst den dritten Tag unterwegs, in drei Wochen will er zurück in England sein.

      Die Berge machen ihm nicht viel aus, er läuft Ultras, Bergrennen in den Alpen. Aber heute sei er etwas müde und froh, in sein Hostel in Estelle zu kommen.

      "Ab Villatuerta verlief der Jakobsweg früher auf einer anderen Route. Weil aber im Jahr 1085 bei Estella die Jungfrau von Puy erschienen sein soll, verläuft seit dem der Jakobsweg über Cuesta del Moro nach Puy, dem Ort der Erscheinung, wo fünf Jahre später Estella gegründet wurde.

      In Estella endet diese Etappe. Der Ort umfasst etwa 13.000 Einwohner und liegt in einem von Bergen umgebenen Tal. Darum sagt man von Estella auch, man sehe es wegen seiner Berge erst dann, wenn man bereits darin stehe. Die Stadt selbst ist voll romanischer Bauten, und architektonischer Höhepunkt ist sicher der Palast der Könige von Navarra."

      Wine Fountain (Vino Tinto Fuente)

      The fountain is part of a winery that once belonged to the attached former Benedictine Monastery of Irache which dates back to the 8th century. It is a beautiful heritage building. We loved that there were very few people there. So serene.Read more

      Tag 5: Puente la Reyna - Ayegui

      Ein sehr intensiver Wandertag neigt sich dem Ende. Er war geprägt von Gemeinschaft, Wind, Regen, Kälte und Abschiednehmen.
      Durch die wenigen Herbergen, die zu dieser Jahreszeit geöffnet haben, treffen sich die Pilger häufiger an den Abenden in den Unterkünften wieder, als es wahrscheinlich in der Hochsaison der Fall ist. So kommt es, dass ich seit Roncesvalles (Nacht 1) mit einer Gruppe von ca. 10 Pilgern fast den ganzen Tag verbringe. Und weil die Zeit so intensiv ist, hat sich eine richtige Trailfamily gebildet, die meinen Camino zu einer ganz besonderen Erfahrung macht.
      Heute war der erste Tag, an dem wir fast alle gemeinsam aus ‚Puente la Reyna’ aufbrachen und gemeinsam durch das ungemütliche Wetter wanderten. Immer wieder trennten wir uns in kleine Grüppchen oder alleine, immer wieder fanden wir uns wieder, tranken Kaffee und philosophierten über die richtige Kleidung für den ständigen Wetterwechsel - hier ist meine Windhose echt der Renner! 😄
      Gegen Mittag erreichten wir ‚Estella‘, wo wir Ito und Angela (vorletztes Bild Mitte) verabschieden mussten. Mit ihnen habe ich in den letzten Tagen wohl am meisten Zeit verbracht und die beiden sind zu Freunden geworden. So sagte Ito zum Abschied: „You are like my brother…“ Damit sprach er aus, was wir beide überrascht feststellten. Durch die vielen intensiven und besonderen Erlebnisse, fühlten wir uns stärker miteinander verbunden, als wir es nach so kurzer Zeit vermutet hätten…
      Nach unserem Abschied ging der Rest in ‚Estella‘ auf die Suche nach etwas zu Essen. Mit Mike (UK) fand ich ein schönes Fleckchen, an dem wir uns aufwärmen konnten. Ein insgesamt toller Tag!

      Day 7, Estrella to Los Arcos

      I woke at 5.45 and quietly tended to my blister prevention duties while everyone else in the room slept. We set off around 7.30 with the slight worry that today’s section of the Camino includes the longest period without access to food and drink. Fiona was a little twitchy about the possibility of walking without coffee and I was worried my supplies of dried apple, nuts and yogurt might not sustain me.
      The first treat was the wine fountain where Bodegas Irache, the local wine producers, provide free supplies to pilgrims. We suspected this only made economic sense because most pilgrims pass by around 8am! The second treat was the discovery of a cafe about 8km into our walk - probably the most universally welcome sight for any Camino pilgrim.
      Today marked the end of our first week. We’ve walked 135km and have made a wonderful start. We were blessed with another stunning day of wide skies and spectacular views. We ended with dinner at Los Arcos with Sheryl and Janice, our Canadian friends, and Denis and Bernie from Ireland, Camino veterans who are now Mammy and Daddy to us all. What’s more, I didn’t get a blister, despite yesterday’s ominous signs and, all in all, would count this as one of the best days to date.

      As we tramped along today, one of the lessons of the Camino crystallised in my mind: whenever you admire a wonderful hillside or hilltop village in the distance, factor in the 90% chance that this is your next destination. It got me thinking about what else I had learned. So here goes:
      1. Walk at your own pace. You test the patience of your companion if you are always urging them to slow down and you can’t enjoy the experience yourself if you are chasing someone else’s tail.
      2. Invest in some sponges to cushion your collarbone from the friction caused by rucksack straps. Currently we are each sporting a yellow bath sponge on one side and a flat cleaning sponge on the other. Fiona’s is blue, mine pink. They do the job! We aspire to 2 flat sponges each. They work better!
      3. Wear your sun hat
      4. Don’t think you only need heavy-duty sun cream on your left hand side (because you’re walking Westwards and the left hand side gets the brunt if the sun). Despite this clever advice, it’s my more neglected righthand side that’s a bit red tonight.
      5. Be paranoid about blisters and leap on all hot spots before the nascent little bastards have a chance to bubble up.

      Estella to Los Arcos

      On the way out of Estella we stopped at a local blacksmith. He had some amazing creations. Then we stopped at the Irache monastery for the wine fountain but unfortunately it was empty. They fill it with 100 liters per day but it was already empty! Thirsty pilgrims! It was a 16 mile day. Beautiful landscape Steve took some beautiful pictures of the landscape. We arrived in Los Arcos, showered and did laundry and finally got to eat. Was asleep by 8:30
      We are going to be taking it easier for a few days. Los Arcos has the Iglesia de Santa Maria Cathedral. It was stunning. Like too stunned to speak stunning. Every wall was intricately painted and the pictures just don’t do it justice.      Read more

      Roncevalles to Zubiri

      Left for Zubiri at 7 AM. Almost 22 km. Still a little tired from the previous day but able to get going and take in the Spanish country side. Stayed at a small but very nice al Berge. 1 of 10 in the room.Read more

      Day 7 - Estella to Los Arcos

      A pleasant walk and perfect walking weather.morning café con leche in a gas station sin croissants. A short walk uphill to a blacksmith shop and then up to a winery that has a wine fountain built into their back wall. They donate 100 litres of wine per day to the pilgrims.
      From then on we were mostly in oak forests and fields of grain.
      We are seeing more grape vines and fig trees. Judging by the trunks, the vines must be 200 years old and the fig trees 200.
      We stayed at Pension Ostadar a modern townhouse converted for pilgrims with a few more euros in their pockets. We had heard that the municipal albergues were very crowded and people were sleeping on foamies in the dining halls.
      We met a couple from Alberta who almost bought a place on Protection Island.
      We had spaghetti bolognese in the square with April and Brenda from USA and Margaret, a spry 75 with great legs and great personality from the Isle of Jersey.      Read more

      Heute kam die bekannte Stelle mit zwei Hähnen, einer für Wasser, einer für Wein…
      Ich hab auch etwas probiert… mega überzeugt war ich jetzt nicht… ich fand es war eine mischung aus Rotwein und Rose der Fritzante also mit Pläterli war… hoffe der richtige Wein ist besser…Read more
