      Rest Day in Pamplona

      September 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We walked about 2.5 miles this morning from Villava to Pamplona & arrived around noon. There was a religious festival taking in the city place all weekend. By early afternoon the city was full of people, lots of families! There were several parades with bigger than life-size characters leading the parades. It was fun to watch the children enjoy the festivities. After checking in to our hotel we explored the old city. We walked around Taconera Gardens which is Pamplona's oldest park documented since the 16th century. The flowers are still beautiful around here. As we walked about we couldn't believe we ran into our Camino friends as the city was packed with lots of people for the festival. We ended our day eating dinner together. Even as we were walking back to the hotel & it was getting dark some families were still enjoying hanging out in the city.Read more

      Day 7 - Pamplona

      May 5, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Arrived in Pamplona at about 2:30 pm. Yes, this is the Pamplona of Hemingway, “Running of the Bulls” fame. The first part of today’s walk was quiet, along the Agra River, but the second section was noisier going through city streets leading to Pamplona. Even in Pamplona itself, a city of about 200,000 residents, I weaved through the centre of the city to get to my hotel which was just off St. James Way, another name for the Camino trail. The Camino path is well laid out where we follow yellow arrows or shell-shaped symbols. A lot of pilgrims are taking a day off tomorrow, exploring the many churches and museums Pamplona has to offer. A big feature of every town so far has been the hourly ringing of church bells- sometimes not great for sleeping. The Running of the Bulls (Feast of San Fermin) is a multi day festival in July where bulls are led through the streets by daredevil runners. Some of these runners have been gored by the bulls., but that’s when it gets to be even more entertaining, I guess.
I wore my sneakers today instead of hiking boots, and it was a good decision for the first 10 kms , but although I have yet to get blisters, I did get hotspots, a precursor to a blister. I have been using Compeed bandages and so far they are doing the job. I’m going back to hiking boots tomorrow. So far, the weather has has been perfect, low 20s with a slight wind.
My focus has generally been to reach my destination at a reasonable time, get settled, then explore the place a bit, but I’m learning that enjoying the journey, noticing nature, noticing the countryside, chatting with fellow travellers makes this a richer experience. That’s the advice I would give others, but have to discipline myself to do it. I’ve included photos highlighting the different types of terrain I went through today.

      Pamplona Iruna

      August 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 39 °C

Coraz bliżej do celu - do SJPD po francuskiej stronie Pirenejów... A właściwie coraz bliżej do początku naszego wędrowania. Odwiedziliśmy naszego przyjaciela Hemingway'a w Cafe Iruna i tu przypadkowo byliśmy świadkami pełnego energii przed meczowego dopingu kibiców z Belgii - Brugge FC, którzy w tej właśnie restauracji zrobili sobie bazę.

      Pamplona Spain 08/04/2023
We are surprised of the cost of food so far. We had a 3 course meal with a large bottle of water and two bottles of wine for 41 euros together. You will not find that in Texas or perhaps Mississippi for the matter.

We are at a boutique historic hotel in “El Casco antiguo de Pamplona” the old historic center of Pamplona. It reminds me El Viejo San Juan in Puerto Rico. Pebble stone narrow streets with shops and tons of tapas bars and restaurants and tons of people.

The church bells rings on the hours is a common sound in Pamplona. Is like all are coordinated 30 seconds apart and you hear the bells ringing for almost 5 minutes nonstop.

We visited the pharmacy and bought some medicine to treat Nick’s feet blisters and then we took a short walk to the busy area where the tapas and other restaurants were located. We ran into the Canadian couple who we met in the last water break before the pick of the Pyrenees and later through the suicidal hill drop where I almost killed myself. We talked for a bit and follow their recommendations for dinner.

Everyone that suffered through El Camino has been very kind and friendly. Every time you see each others is a huge and a kiss in both cheeks like you have known them for ever.. In a way, it is sad that we may not see them ever again but their memories remain of a shared portion of “El Camino de Santiago” Francés..

Live goes on. Tomorrow all the friends we have made along the way (the British father and son, as the Hungarian also father and son, the Italian family, the Croatian couple, the Canadian couple, the three American girls, Helen the British pink shirt lady, the tow French girls, the Priest, the French family, the cyclists Spaniard couple and many more wonderful people the we have met are moving on to their next phase of El Camino de Santiago. Some are going all the way to Santiago de Compostela and others just through their custom respective routes.

This the end of our first phase of El Camino. So far we have walked 49 total miles. The second phase is the recovery phase by staying an extra day in Pamplona. We will commute to Leon and then Triacastela where the next 79 miles 10 days challenge awaits..
