Our Dutch Alburgue in Boadilla del Camin

      1. mai, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

You heard that right! A Dutch albergue in the heart of Spain 🇪🇸

We were given a tip about this unique albergue a couple of days ago from some new friends from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 and were able to book the last 2 beds available for the evening.

Two words were our motivation to push against the wind and reach our destination today: DUTCH PANCAKES! Yes, if it’s not clear yet, we WILL walk for food.

Juntos albergue is a charming place of respite that prides itself on being an albergue for unhurried pilgrims who value a good night’s sleep more than an early departure. That’s why we have quiet time from 10 pm to 6.30 am, so you can really “sleep in” without being disturbed by pilgrims packing their backpacks noisily and shining their headlamps all around. We can’t begin to tell you what a luxury that is for an albergue.

Believe it or not, heathy and hearty vegetable-based meals are hard to come by on the Camino, apart from a basic mix salad here and there or soup. The wonderful Dutch owners, having walked the Camino Frances themselves, bring to their albergue all the things they felt was missing from the journey, including wonderful vegetarian options and their famous Dutch pancakes…. How are we Dutch and have never had a Dutch pancake ?!?

    • Day 22 - Hontanas to Boadilla - 32km

      20. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

      32kms ... done and done!

Last night, I stayed out and watched the sunset from my albergue. It was nice because I quite often don’t get that chance. Then it was off to bed. I was up at 6:30 and then out the door just after 7:00am. By the time I got to the trail, I didn’t really need my headlamp anymore.

I stopped in Hontanas to grab a sandwich and a coke for the road. It was a cute little town. When I passed by a bar I immediately recognized it, I thought, I sat right here. Most of my memories from 2009 are because I have photos and journal, but there is a rare time I will pass something and know that I saw this before, even without the physical evidence.

The day was quite steady. I kept to my routine and rule of stopping around every 5km and I think it really helped. By the end of the day, my feet and muscles were tired, but not extremely tired. I think I could have gone further if needed.

For the last 8km, I needed to pull out my music to keep me going, mostly because there was wind and I had a strange squeaking in my backpack (it was the plastic bags, this is the first time, so tomorrow I will take a closer look at that)

When I got to the albergue, I got a great warm welcome from Eduardo. When I came in, he was on the phone and there was a line up to check in and he immediately pointed to me and I pointed back. At one point, there were ladies behind me, and he told them to come forward (as he knew they were a fast check-in) and he said “that is just Julie from Canada”. When it came my turn, he came out from behind the desk and gave me a big hug. It was wonderful. I felt very special. He also gave me a wonderful bed in a dorm with only single beds. I am sure he saved it for me. Any other place, arriving so late (I arrived around 5pm), I would have most definitely had a top bunk somewhere.

Dinner was very good, two soups (vegetable and white bean), salad, beef stew, and an ice cream bar for desert.

I am exhausted now, so I won’t be posting online today at all. Tomorrow I have a room on my own, so hopefully I will get caught up then.

Throwback to 2009 from Julie’s Journal

I showered, washed my clothes, then went out for a little walk and then a drink with another German named Martin. I had a couple glasses of white wine. Joerg was a little silent, I suspect he was a little jealous. I hope someday he will realize that there is no one better than him for me!!

Etappe 14: Castellanos nach Bornilla del

      2. oktober 2022, Spania ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

      Cold morning

      15. august 2022, Spania ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

After 5 h of sleep I started at 5.30 am! It’s cold and very dark outside- the only companions are a few bats 🦇 and Melissa Etheridge „cone to my window. After a while I passed a guy with a headlight and since then I see him following me like a shadow! Somehow I liked it better to follow his light! In the darkness I need to be very careful, not to hurt my feet! Listened a bit to Hape Kerkeling and thought about my mirror- there was this German woman from Würzburg who constantly complained about everything- I know I can be line that, too! Horrible-I will try to stop being like that in the future!Les mer

      Late start from Boadilla

      29. juli 2022, Spania ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

It’s almost 6:30 and I am not on the road yet. The bed was comfy and the dreams oh so sweet.

I was in fact woken up by the clattering of storks on the church nearby, a welcome change from pilgrims packing, and decided to skip coffee until Fromista, about six kilometers down the road.Les mer

      RIP Camino Ninja

      28. juli 2022, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

A sad update, one I never wanted to write. On this Camino and others, I’ve used and use Camino Ninja, an amazing app that shows me just the things I need and nothing else. It is the brain child of founder and sole programmer Andy Max Jensen, who walked over 20k Camino miles to map the roads and feed them into his app.

Camino Ninja is free. And the best of the bunch.

Today word reaches me, that Andy, aka Camino Ninja, has died after collapsing on the Camino, a mere handful of miles ahead of me. He was 49. Andy was the Pilgrim’s Pilgrim. He was, in person, in email, on Instagram, and as a coder, always there for everyone. He walked with pilgrims to hear their stories, stories that strongly influenced how he worked on his websites and app.

Tonight I’ll raise my glass in his honor. May he forever feel the soft ground of an eternal Camino under his feet.

      Boadilla

      14. juli 2022, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 99 °F

Photos: 5am start time- selfie with the moon; Boots lined up outside of the albergue; Ancient churches seen in every town we cross; skull and crossbones on the side of a church- no Moors in perpetuity; landscape at the top of a steep grade; another house built into the side of a hill; another cross in the middle of nowhere.
Communication on the Camino: a French woman mining a headache and vomiting lying on the bed across from me🤮; an Italian man, not able to speak the English conversation around the table, smiled and served each one of us paella and wine; in the cities, a honking car is a positive sign on the camino. It is usually followed by a waving hand, pointing the correct way, opposite of the direction we are traveling. We have never been more than a block off of our path before being redirected by the locals; finger shaking, then "no mijas" then pointing across the street; another Italian man with little English directing another Pilgrim with a question to Marjory and me, referring to us as "The Teachers; listening to two men arguing in Italian about whether DaVinci painted the Mona Lisa in France or Italy; listening to two German men discuss different types of beer, including one variety that is meat flavored, and that it should be served at room temperature; a young Brazilian woman aptly describing the hunched over limping gait seen by people after a long trek as the "Pilgrim walk"; our friends from Korea yelling across the street excitedly waving both hands with big smiles; a woman from the states yelling "Hey Peace Corps",noticing the patch on my pack. She had been stationed in Georgia before being evacuated. We all seem to find a way to communicate!

      16. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

In their defense there was also some unpictured quite delish soups and warm bread for starters. Derailed slightly on the main but was redeemed wholeheartedly with apple + knife and fork for desert which was I assured was picked directly from the tree (w a sticker apparently 😂)Les mer

A frosty & foggy walk to Fromista

      13. oktober 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

We had a very nice stay in Boadilla del Camino. Our Hotel runs the Albergue next door, with a group Pilgrim meal. We are with Willy from Austria,a guy from Hungary and three Bicycle Pilgrims from Brasil. Great meal.

We started this morning around 8:05, before the sun was up, only 45F/6C. Chilly and the surrounding fields we covered in fog. The Camino eventually jiond the path besides the Canal de Castillo.

We crossed the canal over an old lock set that had a huge drop, before entering Fromista. A coffee and croissant break here.
