    • Day 23 - Boadilla to Carrión - 26km

      September 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

After a big hug from Eduardo in the morning, I was off into the wind and the rain. The forecast was for rain all morning, so there was no avoiding it or waiting it out.

I realized once I was on the trail, that I hadn’t fixed the hood on the rain jacket yet because a couple weeks back, the string fell out. I had been carrying it all along, but kept forgetting to fix it. Well today I paid for it. The wind was so strong that I had to hold the hood down for quite a bit. At one point, I found the exact right head position that worked for keeping the hood on without having to hold it.

The first stop was in 5.6 km so I pulled out the string and fixed it then. The rain had slowed again by that point, so I got excited, but it picked up again and boy was I glad I could tie the hood closed.

In another 4km, I took a break at another bar, and had a hot chocolate and small piece of cake. I wasn’t really hungry, but it is the least I could do to get out of the rain and use the washroom. It was funny at this bar, there were only a few pilgrims, but I got the sense that the staff didn’t really want us. When I got up to leave, I was putting on my poncho, and neither of them, even though standing close by, helped me. It is always a challenge to put it over the backpack, but I usually manage (and I did this time as well). But usually, when someone is standing nearby, they help.

At another 3.5km there was a sign for another bar, I thought, yes, I should take the break. I had a reservation for tonight so there was no rush to arrive. This was a whole different experience. The woman behind the bar was very friendly and wouldn’t stop talking. An American couple came in just after me, and the woman spoke Spanish, so she would translate when needed. It was a pleasant experience so I stayed longer than expected. The good thing is, by the time I was leaving, it was noon and the sun had come out. Just another 13km to go.

I usually have a policy that I take off my boots and socks when I take a break, but because each of these times was inside at a bar, I didn’t want to do that (I think it is a little inappropriate). When I got to the next town, which was at the 20km mark, I was able to finally take off my boots and socks, and my feet were soaking wet. They were all wrinkly and the one blister I have on my baby toe was worse. I kept my feet in the sun for about 20 minutes and then put dry socks on (even though the boots were still a little wet.).

Now it was time to walk the final 6km. I was ready, dry feet, music on the headset, the sun was shining and the views were wonderful, but that wind, it was relentless. I was walking head first into the wind. I had been walking without my hiking sticks, but thought I would pull them out to see if it gave me any extra power to get there. Not sure it helped, but I made it finally.

I have been keeping in touch with Barb (from Australia) on WhatsApp and we met up with Toni (from Toronto) for dinner. I had a delicious burger and fries.

I am staying in a private room, and it is wonderful (in hostel standards). It actually has a bath tub. I went into town and bought some Epson salts and just finished my bath. Now it is time to relax and get organized for tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the special day on the camino where there is a 17km with no towns, only a food truck in the middle, so you have to go at least 17km no matter what. I am thinking that I will only do the 17km to give my body a rest as I have almost done 60km in 2 days. I won’t make a reservation, so if there is no bed, I will continue on to the next town which is at the 23km mark. Be sure to stay tuned to tomorrow’s blog. It was in this 17km stretch that I had a huge personal moment in 2009 and I will share my journal entry with you.

      Throwback to 2009 - Julie’s Journal

I eventually caught up to Lena just before Boadilla. We stopped at the albergue there for a coke and I met a man working there that used to live in London. He asked me to take a post card home for him so I said I will. I would have loved to stay here at this hostel but Joerg was waiting in Fromista for me. And when I finally arrived … he was a sight for sore eyes! I really missed him.

He greeted me again with chocolate just like yesterday. He then directed us to the albergue and then asked if he could carry my bag to the room. When I said he could, he said “you are too good to me”. He says that because that is what I often say to him. We went out for a coffee (and hot chocolate) then went for a nap. We are in different rooms tonight.

It is now time for bed, he has gone and left me with a nice kiss goodnight. Life could not be any better than it is right now. I often think throughout the day “why am I so lucky?” I am so blessed!!! It is time to sleep and to dream.

Day 21 - Carrión de los Condes

      September 26, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 73 °F

Today was our longest hiking day of our trip, and it seemed easier than the last long hike we had earlier. We have two more long hike days, but they are in the last ten days. The hike was over 16 miles, and we started at a 6:45am. The sunrise here is at 8:05am.Read more

P de Campos to Carrion de los Condes 17k

      September 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Another easy walk today. 17k in about 5 hours. Depending on the source, we are approximately half way there. Only 400ish Km to go!! We took a variant of the Camino that kept us in a more shaded route. The last part of the walk was along a road with no shadows. Luckily we did it early enough in the day that we didn’t feel too hot.
We decided to do our big meal as lunch. So much food when you order the menu del dia. We met up with some other pilgrims from the States and Brazil and dined with them. This restaurant came highly recommended. It was full of locals. It was the first time this trip that we had to wait to be seated.
In the evening we attended a pilgrim mass and received a pilgrim blessing on the alter afterwards. It was beautiful

Villalcazar de Sirga to Carriòn de los C

      October 15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

This was a rest day, we only walked about 6 km to our lodging on the far side of Carrión de los Condes. It was also a splurge night: I had reserved a room in a hotel that was inside an old monastery in Carriòn, it was a four-star and super nice, but it cost less than a Comfort Inn in the US.Read more

      Sister Act III: Boarding School

      April 11 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

It's run by nuns and there are NO BUNK BEDS I'm catatonic with glee. Will Ms Clavel tuck me in?

This town has collected everyone, as after it "starts the big straight track and the longest section of the Way without any settlement or village. Over 17 km await from here to Calzadilla (all of them belonging to the Roman road connecting Bordeaux to Astorga). Cheer up and Buen Camino."

So yes, definitely having breakfast tomorrow. I've bought some mandarins, a protein yogurt, tomatoes and bread. There's also a kettle, in His name we give thanks, so I can have a tea.

      Carrion de los Condes

      September 12, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

Made it 11 more miles down the road today, it was a beautiful start to the day but then it got warm and boring walking next to the road... not many photo ops either..... I added 2 pics from last nights dinner and art in the hotel we stayed at. The ladies who run it were fabulous made us feel like family.Read more

    • Day 23

      Carrión de los Condes

      September 27, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 63 °F

12 miles again today. This seems to be my sweet spot of distance. It was a beautiful day with lots of sunshine. Most of the day the trail was along the road...but with some separation.
We found two random statues to pose with and a bar/albergue that had farm animals running around. This place also had small huts and teepees you could sleep in.
We stopped in Villalcázar de Sirga for lunch and to visit the church. It looked like a fortress on the outside.
In case you were wondering what the view was like today....endless wheat, hay, and sunflower fields.
After a delicious dinner (sorry, no picture) we treated ourselves to ice cream.

Boadilla to Carrion de los Condes
      Day 18 - 26km

Well! We are half way to our destination goal of Santiago!! And it feels great!🚶‍♀️🚶‍♀️🤩🤩
After a nice pilgrims breakfast at our hotel, we were on the path before sunrise,(which is not hard as the sun doesn’t get up till 8 😉). The day started looking good but a fog rolled in and chilled things down for a while. We chose to walk the alternate route beside a river instead of by the highway, which was lovely, albeit 2kms longer. 🙄The landscape is starting to change as we are in the Meseta. Not so hilly and a bit barren in places.
We have made many friends already, which we meet up with at coffee stops and drinks, and meals at the end of the day, and have found everyone very friendly. Every day we encounter many pilgrims and locals, and we hear a constant shout out to us, wishing us “Buen Camino”. Really lovely. 😍
Our Spanish is getting better and I can even get them to understand my half strength coffee most of the time. 😏However, as we get further on, we are finding English more widely spoken, saving us from the daily charades challenge of making ourselves understood !! 😆

    • Day 21

      To Carrión de los Condes

      September 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 72 °F

      September 20

Huge happy moment today!!! Paul and Mirabelle, who we met and walked with on the Camino five years ago, surprised us by driving down from the Netherlands to walk with us for two days. ❤️🙂 We were sitting in the plaza and could not believe it when they walked up!!

What is even more amazing is Alan and I spent a lot of time talking about them today, and we reminisced about what we had experienced with them in this town five years ago. When you think you might not see people ever again, and then you do…it is beyond special. It will be a magical Camino memory forever in our hearts.❤️❤️

We are looking forward to the next two days! Tomorrow, we walk to Moratinos then to Sahagún on Friday.

    • Day 13

      Carrion de los Condes

      July 29, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

For 500 years, pilgrims stayed and healed at the Monastery of San Zoilo in Carrion de los Condes. Today, the Monastery is a high class hotel with Michelin priced (and Truck Stop inspired) restaurant.

The monastery features a “Camino de Santiago” theme, which stands in stark contrast to the treatment of pilgrims. And, yes, I stayed here. Paid more than what I’d paid for the past week in accommodation, including a €50 dinner that could have come from the bowels of an East London greasy spoon (and would probably have tasted better).

I wanted to see the Monastery, and the only way to do so is to stay here. Not my proudest and most pilgrim moment, I admit.

Tomorrow, I’ll be back to being Just A Pilgrim, but tonight I am grumpy Mikka, angry at myself for spending so much money to, essentially, just witness the Church (again) strut its riches while asking for more.
