      Los Arcos to Logroño

      May 12, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 7 °C

Walk was so good today. Arrived in Logroño about 1pm and went for a beer until check-in time at 2pm. Walked alone mostly but spoke to a few Americans on the way. It's really entertaining to hear them trying to pronounce Logroño. 😂 (Low Grow No)
Went to Calle.San Laurel for Pintxos and wine. Atmosphere was amazing.

      Two stages!

      September 27, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

I forgot to post yesterday, so I’ll catch up here. Yesterday was a nice walk to Los Arcos for several reasons, despite the heat. One, a couple iconic stops early on; a blacksmith whose father and grandfather were also blacksmiths in that location. He makes small items for sale (photo below) and also larger items, like a gorgeous, dramatic, huge bull. Right after that stop was the famous wine fountain, offering both water and wine for free. A queen endowed this centuries ago, apparently and the government continues out via a local wine maker. Again, see photo!

Also yesterday was nice because I spent the day walking with Tom. We are both Catholic and had fun geeking out on history of the church, the issue of hell, and best of all, comparing conversion stories. So fascinating!! Made the day (a moderate 21 kilometers ) go more quickly. And just to head you off at the pass, friends and family, Tom is married, so don’t even go there:-)

Today was a longer day, about 28 kilometers, and we got an earlier start: 6:45. It was cool, dark and lovely. Today has a wonderful breeze too, which seemed to greet us at the top of each rise, like a reward for our efforts. I had more quiet time, and I was glad for it. It was a long walk though, and a nice thing that happens once in a while is that you come around a bend to find someone has set up a little food and rest station. An oasis! That happened today and I include a photo.

It has been surprising how quickly we connect with people as we walk, and then worry we will lose track when places for. We were both thrilled to see our friend Jun already settled in at the albergue we stopped at today. And again, after David and Olly thought they would stop at the previous town they just messaged that they are here - hooray! Our little world coalesced quickly! Now if we can track Rebecca down we’ll feel complete.

On the mend 🙏 in Logroño

      September 29, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 63 °F

Today David is feeling better! Hopefully this virus will be the same for both of us, with two days and two nights of fever. If so, I’m about a day away from feeling better! Turns out a lot of other pilgrims have a similar bug.

I felt terrible this morning and we contemplated taking the bus to Logroño and skipping the walk altogether for today. But…we both think it’s better to walk some than not at all so we made a plan to walk 7.5 km to Sansol. I’m glad we did! It was relatively flat and through vineyards and hay farming plots.

We saw a shepherd with a couple hundred sheep coming our way on the path. I didn’t realize that a couple hundred sheep can make that much noise with her a little hooves! Strangely, there were a few goats intermixed. There were four herding dogs too. It was pretty cool!

We learned how to navigate the Spanish bus system today, and took the bus from Sansol to the city of Logroño. After being on the Camino, walking through tiny towns, we were kind of blown away in the city! We were like, look! You could buy a soda on every block! They have this Gatorade like drink called Aquarius. We’ve been drinking those because they have electrolytes and we are sweating so much. It is hotter here than usual for this time of year. This weekend it’s going to be quite hot, in the high 80°F range. We’ll see how long it takes us to get back into our regular walking range after the bug. At least we know now how to use the bus! for €2.70, we could take the bus from one place to another city about half an hour away. The bus was nice too! Kind of like those discovery buses that we used to take kids on field trips in. You have to put your backpack underneath like big pieces of luggage. They were actually a lot of pilgrims on the bus. I imagine some of them were sick like us. There were a few that had big bandages on their feet from blisters. We were glad not to have blisters when we saw that!

We might go out and explore this beautiful city a bit. If so, I will put a few pictures on the blog. Unfortunately, I’m still feeling under the weather enough that all I really really want to do is lay on the bed in this beautiful city.

It’s amazing how much better life looks when you’re feeling a little bit healthier!

      August 26 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 54 °F

Past a makeshift peregrino bench I was tempted to sit down but it's too early

      Beautiful sunrise this morning

Coming to a city on a hill

Every time I see a downhill run I know I'm going to pay for it later

Stop at a little church that was a little larger than our living room and had only bench seats are along the wal. It cost a Euro to enter so I figured that was a reasonable Donation. I sat and prayed for a few minutes it was very moving

      Afzien

      May 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

De laatste 30 km zijn echt afzien. Zon , zon, asfalt, asfalt. Jazeker! Zeker tot voorbij Leon. Dit maakt dat ik er echt even flink doorheen zit. Dit is niet gewoon even doorzetten voor mij. Ik vind het slopend en ook geeft het niet echt voldoening. Dat maakt me best verdrietig. Read more

      Rory's Phone

      June 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

I ran across my strolling companion from yesterday... Walking back. He had forgotten his cellphone in Los Arcos.

I am reminded that on any path, we sometimes find the best laid plans aren't at all what the day holds in store.

I'm reminded also that my petty concerns are usually just that- petty- compared to the real problems that someone else faces. No, I'm not saying that a few extra kms of walking is a disaster.... Just that while I'm fretting over flies, someone else has a bigger challenge and while he is attending to that, surely someone else is injured somewhere... And up the line.

It doesn't mean I can't feel what I'm feeling, just that we all do well to consider the fate of others as well and hopefully appreciate how good we have it, despite our woes.

      Geradeaus… laufen, laufen laufen…

      October 3, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C
