      Malta

      5. mai, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Our next port of call was the small country of Malta. It is a melting pot of nationalities- Greek, Arab, Italian, and English. The official language is English and secondary is Arabic. We saw the Dingli Cliffs and stopped for a photo by a small church. From there we went to the towns I’d Medina and Rabat. We visited the Catacombs and Basilica of St Paul a beautiful church.Les mer

      Day 1. Madrid

      9. september 2019, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Our trip started with a tapas meal.
      6 different restaurants.
We started with anchovies which I never thought I liked...turns out I was wrong. 😁
We ended with a shot of sweet wine that was served in the end of an icecream cone dipped in chocolate and that becomes the small shot glass! The entire evening was wonderful. Alex was our guide and was really good at explaining the food and it's significance.
Up early tomorrow to meet the rest of our tour group!
      Great first day in Madrid!

      Museo del Prado

      10. juni 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

The big event of the day was the museo del prado, which was a very interesting museum with representaron of a lot of famous artists. Unfortunately pictures were not allowed in there - I took a lot anyway when there weren’t guards around, and when I saw the garden of earthly delights by Bosch I decided to do it and get scolded anyway because it is so famous and I did a research paper on it in high school. Totally worth it. After the museum we walked around the parque de retiro, Madrid’s Central Park, which was enormous and beautiful although it was too hot out to enjoy it. We also got nice views on the rooftop of a mall on Gran Via street, which has a very New York vibe to it, and found better (yet still overpriced) food than yesterday. Frankly Dad and I are underwhelmed by Madrid - for such a big city, there is not a ton of interesting stuff to see, and it doesn’t feel very unique. Like many parts of Barcelona, Madrid feels a lot like any city in the US. It is certainly not a bad place to be but for such a world famous place it does not live up to expectations. Public transport is also more confusing to navigate and less useful than in the other cities I’ve been in (at least the ones big enough for public transport to be necessary). I would say this is the only place on the trip I have felt disappointed in so far.Les mer

      Madrid

      1. april, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

We had 1 full day in Madrid, and like the clowns that we are, we slept in until 12. We were pretty slow moving after the pubcrawl yesterday. It took us a while, but we went to a Café for some good eats and decided we wanted to go to Parque De El Retiro. We easily could've spent all day there just walking around. We checked out Palacio de Cristal in the park as well. Unfortunately, it was temporarily closed so we couldn't go inside, but just outside of it there was a nice pond with fish, turtles, black swans, ducks and whatever else. The sun was finally out today, so we just took a minute to lay in the grass and just chill, which was really nice. I think it made both of us more tired though lol. We wondered around for a little while more until we were hungry again. We stopped at a little shop for a sandwich and went back to the hostel to just chill out before the free sangria. Pearse wanted to have a chill night and relax because we have an early train tomorrow, so I went to the free sangria and pub crawl with some people from the hostel. I ended up meeting up with some of the people from last night's pubcrawl. We went to the same bars as the previous night. Last night, I saw there was neon face paint but didn't get any, so tonight I had to. The last place we went to was the only place we didn't go to yesterday. It's called Shoko nightclub. It's 3 stories tall, and there were over 3000 people there! At some point, I was waiting in line for a drink, and the lady at the bar got up on the bar and started pouring some sorta pink hard liquor. It kinda looked like baby birds with everyone's head back and mouths open lol. I got a healthy amount in my mouth, but I'm wearing more of it than I drank. I couldn't believe they were just dumping bottles out. At some point in the night, somebody was dancing next to me and hit me pretty good on my eyebrow with his glass, hard enough the glass broke. After my new Greek friends had a "word" with him, the party kept going. It wasn't till I was walking home that my friend Thanos told me my eyebrow was cut. I'm glad he took a pretty classic photo for me lol. I'd say it was a pretty chill night, nothing too crazy lmaoLes mer

      22. april 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Tweede dag in Madrid vandaag.

      Madrid, Spain

      18. mai, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Arrived in Madrid! Checked into our hotel and went for a walk. We are very near Real Madrid's home ground.
Dinner at a cheerful local restaurant.
We tried to stay up until 8pm - and we almost made it 😴
Excellent sleep and great breakfast - and we were ready to explore Madrid. We used the hop on, hop off buses which worked well. Saw lots of Madrid, what a fabulous city!
Went to the Sophia art gallery. Turned out it was Museum day in Madrid, and all galleries were free. Bonus!
We met our tour guide in the evening and went to dinner with everyone - 32 on the tour. Lots of Americans.
Drove out to the King and Queen's palace. They only have dignitary functions there now. We had a delicious meal in a restaurant close by.
So many people out and about. Families with very young children still walking around everywhere. Bill and I went for a walk when we got back, about 9:30pm, and there were still kids running around. It was still quite light.
This would be a great place to live (although our Spanish would require some practice!)

      Monday in Madrid

      20. mai, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

I am currently on train heading back to San Sebastián catching up on my 'footprints'... I have 5 hours to fill!

This morning, we had breakfast and coffee with Nat and Jennie. They are moving on to London today. After breakfast, we all walked to El Retiro Park, which is a green haven in the center of Madrid. The park covers 125 hectares and there are more than 15,000 trees.

After saying our goodbyes, Jeremy and I headed to Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum. There was a huge queue probably due to free entry on Mondays. With limited time, we decided to keep walking rather than queue. Unfortunately, the next museum we blindly headed to was not open on a Monday, so we kept strolling.

After heading to a Mercado, looking around and stopping for lunch, we headed back to the original museum - no queues, so we headed in and admired the art. A great range of art including: Pollock, Miró, Hopper, Mondrian, Van Gogh, Goya, Degas, Renóir, Monet... I was rather impressed with and could have spent longer here admiring the art.

Arriving back in San Sebastián was like arriving home after a weekend away...however very nice knowing we were returning to more holidaying, not work!!

      5. juli 2023, Spania

Today the girls went to another art gallery, I opted out and decided to do some exploring and pretend I was living the Madrid life. Not gonna lie, 2 people asked me for directions! Local.

      I clocked 20k steps by 1pm 😅

Had the best home made peanut butter on toast ever!
