      Moratinos

      3. maj, Spanien ⋅ 🌬 57 °F

This was our longest distance so far on the Camino. 35KM and our feet were sore, But the pilgrims meal at Hostal Moratinos was fantastic and fun with the other pilgrims. The hosts are great. The road today was never ending with a 17KM stretch with zero services. We have been carrying food and extra water to eat along the way.Læs mere

Von carrion de los condes nach ledigos.

      23. maj 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

      Carrión to Ledigos

      3. maj, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Another flat day on the Meseta, however unlike our march along the road yesterday, today we were met with vast open fields, some wild flowers, and a few small wooded areas here and there.

We left Carrión this morning knowing that our first town for a pit stop was not going to be until 17k (10.5 miles) down the trail. We were thrilled come upon an adorable food truck in the middle of nowhere at about 10k!Læs mere

Tag 23 von Ledigos nach Śahagun

      24. maj 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

      Another day in the meseta

      8. august 2022, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Today I ended up hanging with Jan all day again. We started the day with the longest stretch between villages in the whole Camino, 17k.
There was a food truck at the halfway point, and we stopped for a snack. We continued to Calzadilla de la Cueza, where we had smoothies at a cafe on the edge of the village, with a beautiful meseta view from the shade (see pic).
Then we continued to the final destination for the day, Ledigos.
The route was fairly flat, 25k total, mostly on a gravel track.

      Compostela (and dinner)

      27. juni 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☁️ 75 °F

My sister Karen asked a great question, “What is a compostela?”

Essentially it is a diploma for walking at least 100km of the Camino. While walking, we have a “pilgrim passport” which we get stamped every night and at any other significant sites (churches, restaurants, museums, etc.). I’ve posted a picture of my pilgrim passport in its current state.

From Sarria on it fills up more quickly because we’re required to get two stamps each day. Most pilgrims simply get their albergue to stamp it at night and in the morning.

A small church in Sahagun (which we should reach tomorrow) offers a “halfway” compostela for those who started in St. Jean Pied de Port, which we did. I’m not certain whether some of the taxi/bus/train rides that we have taken will disqualify us or not, but we’ll see.

I’ve also posted a picture of dinner first course (white beans with squid) as well as Sean’s Camino friend Brandon. Sean barely touched his dinner and the albergue graciously offered him other dishes and then only charged half-price. Very kind!

      Albergue La Morena

      8. august 2022, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

I chose this albergue based on the reviews I found on the guide I got in the Camino Forum and gronze.com. Jan just followed me.
We arrived a bit late, and I was a little worried that it might be full, as we didn't have a reservation (I have made very few reservations if any in the last week).
I was very surprised to see that we were the first ones, and as of 5.45pm, the only ones here! It's possible that many pilgrims would have gone to the next village, just over 3k away.
The albergue is small but beautiful, looks brand new, and has very thoughtful details, like privacy curtains for every bed, good quality cotton bed sheets and pillowcases (most albergues provide disposable ones), power point and reading light in every bed, and a free water bottle and piece of dark chocolate for every guest. As good as a hotel.
There are 2 sets of normal bunk beds, where access is from the long side of the bed. All other sets are like in a box, with access on the feet end of the bed. It's a good design for space saving, but my opinion of the place wouldn't be the same if I had to sleep in one of those.

      Welcome to Ledigos

      3. november 2022, Spanien ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

Well, I did my first true double. Usually the stages on the Camino are about 20km to 25km apart and today I hoofed all the way from Frómista to Ledigos.
44km to be exact. Ledigos is a one horse town really, but look at the video what I found.

The hike itself was the way I like it, total solitude. Not until km 36 until I spoke with another pilgrim. Aspergers love. No real good pictures, the one where I get my double shot of Espresso and a landscape or two. Don't forget the video....

I doubt there will be many more arrivals today, dinner is being served at 7pm.

      Calzaldilla de los Hermanillos

      11. oktober 2023, Spanien ⋅ 🌙 48 °F

Today we met an exciting milestone! We passed through Sahagún which is the unofficial midway point of the Camino Francés. So the actual mileage estimates are kind of varied for the Camino but most folks say it’s about 790 km (485 miles) long. Any distance marker of less than 395 km to Santiago means you’re on the “downhill side,” the second half. All of the distance markers were less than 395 km today! We’re having a great time but there’s something about seeing that we’ve made it more than half way to Santiago that really elevates the spirits!

I don’t know how great the pictures are today as we were on a very flat section of Camino. It was allegedly 27 km from Ledigos where we woke up today to Calzadilla de Los Hermanillos. However, it was actually closer to 34 km! That’s over 21 miles! We were hungry in the town before Calzadilla de los Hermanos and the only thing open was a little mini store where
the very nice lady made us a bocadillo (baguette sandwich) with ham and cheese on it. She was very friendly and we chatted a bit and I asked “So we must be pretty close to Calzadilla de los Hermanillos now, right?” And she said no, it’s 9 more kilometers straight out of town. So after we ate our lunch at a cute little park with a pond full of jumping frogs, we started the walk out of town. We didn’t see another soul on foot, in a car, or even in a tractor for over 6 miles. We started to say that maybe this is what it feels like to be
The last two living people on the planet! The Camino splits in two a ways back and I guess most pilgrims went the other way because no other pilgrims were out on the Camino with us and although we later met two lovely Australian women at dinner, it seemed like we were the only guests at the casa rural where we are staying tonight. So odd after having dinner with about 40 other pilgrims last night and seeing them all on the first few hours of the Camino today!

Tomorrow we are walking 23 km to Mansilla de las Mulas, our last destination in La Meseta, the section of agricultural plains. We’ll miss the Meseta! It’s quiet and lovely and so pretty! We’ll be walking into the biggest city on our Camino, León, the day after tomorrow.

David’s back is improving quite a bit. No tilt and he doesn’t have much pain. He’s anxious to “do his part” carrying stuff but hopefully he can rest it a few more days!

      Leaving Ledigos

      28. juni 2023, Spanien ⋅ ☀️ 55 °F

Bunch of pics from Ledigos this morning on our way to Sahagun. Typical breakfast (less the coffee for Sean), church, bridge, non-typical portal, a fence made of railroad tracks, close-ups of us at the portal, and a pilgrim statue.

In addition, another 360 morning view.

It was a relatively short and easy walk today. Only 13 miles as we wanted to spend time with friends in Sahagun, and fairly cool to start out—especially compared to typical June weather in the meseta (this flat stretch of the Camino). And very little hills!
