      Etappe 13 - Castrojeriz

      Die Fortsetzung der Etappe 12 hatte zur Folge, dass ich heute ca. 48 km gelaufen bin.
      Da ich sehr oft bei Dunkelheit meine Etappen begann, hätte ich bei Ende in Hontanas viele schöne Dinge verpasst.
      Dazu zählt unter anderen San Anton, eine der sonderbarsten Ruinen am Wegrand, ebenfalls
      die wunderschönen Ausblicke auf Castrojeriz mit der Kirche Nuestra Señora del Manzano und dem Kastrum.
      In Castrojeriz war es etwas schwierig, eine Unterkunft zu finden, welche außerhalb eines Refugios ist.
      Mit Hinweisen habe ich meine heutige Unterkunft Alberque Casa Nostra gefunden. Beim Wirt habe ich wahrscheinlich mit meiner Anreise aus Burgos so viel Mitleid erreicht, dass er mir zu einem Sonderpreis einen kleinen Schlafsaal zur alleinigen Nutzung gab.
      Ein kurzer Rundgang mit Besuch der Kirche und ein kleines Abendessen ( katalanische Suppe, Schweinebäckchen, Pudding, Bier) runden den Tag ab - das erste Pilgermenü, was ich in dieser Form bekam.
      Fazit des Tages: öfter auf das Innere hören und seine Grenzen gewissermaßen austesten. Es kommt immer zu einem guten Ende. Glück und Vertrauen gehören eng zusammen.      Read more

      Day 18: Hornillos to Castrojeriz, part 2

      We enjoyed Castrojeriz. We showered, left out clothes to dry in the sun, and walked to explore a little. We visited a beautiful church and enjoyed the views of the valley. We had a pretty good pilgrim’s dinner at the albergue - Castilian garlic soup is delicious! Then time for bed in our very cosy bunk bed compartments.

      1.-3. On the way to Castrojeriz we walked by these beautiful ruins of the Convento del San Juan. Actually, we stopped for a cold drink - there’s an albergue there, believe it or not.
      4. Lovely wide path leading to Castrojeriz
      5.-8. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Manzano in Castrojeriz. So beautiful! Theres a museum of sorts inside, which we paid €1 to see, and the very kind man working there was excited to tell us about some of the exhibits. We were told that photos without flash were ok, so these photos aren’t contraband. Unbelievable workmanship!
      9. Ruins of the Castillo de Castrojeriz, which squats on the mountain above the village. The size of the castle must’ve been awe-inspiring when it was whole! We saw a plaque commemorating the *1,000* year anniversary of the village. Difficult for an American to fathom!      Read more

      Castrojeriz

      Today was an easy walk! Along the way we stopped at a gorgeous ruin of a Franciscan pilgrim hospital. There’s an albergue there, and someday I’d love to stay.
      We rolled into town in the early afternoon, walking with our super excellent Camino friends David and Ollie and decided to stay at the albergue they had sussed out, Orion. Bibimbap for dinner made by the Korean co-owner - something different to look forward to! After perusing the town (again, such gorgeous, narrow streets!) and finding a much needed ATM we decided, because two of us are in our mid-20’s, that we should climb up the very steep, shade-free mountainside to visit the ruined castle. Yes it was almost 90 F at that point…But, it was a castle, and the view was great, so all good. Back in town we also discovered an ossuary, with a message for we the living which you can read if you look at the two scull and crossbones closely. Always good to contemplate our mortality.       Day 18 Hornillos d. Camino-Gastrojeriz

      We all decided to start in shorts today, but it was a bit chilly until the sun came up. It turned out to be another beautiful sunny day. We stopped in Hontanas for a little break. I had a tasty piece of watermelon. The first I have seen in Spain. Our next stop was at the ruins of Convento de Anton. We passed under the archway Arco de San Anton. There is a very rustic Albergue still in operation there, but it has no heat, no lights and no meals are available. We ended our day in Gastrojeriz at Albergue Rosalia. Kim and I attended a pilgrim meditation, while Julie did some exploring around town. The pilgrims meal was quite good here.Read more

      St. Antón

      Heute ist ein schöner Tag - und so ereignisreich. Ich sitze in den Ruinen des Convento San Antón, 3 km vor meinem Tagesziel Castrojeriz. Es ist Sonntag, noch Vormittag und die Stimmung hier ist ruhig und ein bisschen heilig. Viele Menschen sitzen nur und schauen.
      Heute Morgen bin ich wieder früh im Dunkeln los. Es war frisch und nach kurzer Zeit habe ich mir noch etwas Langärmeliges und Socken aus dem Rucksack geholt und angezogen. Seit dem Vollmond vor zwei Tagen ändert sich das Wetter. Es ist nicht mehr so heiß und es weht ein erfrischender Wind. Gegen Abend gibt es Gewitter.
      Der noch immer gut gefüllte abnehmende Mond steht über mir am Morgenhimmel und es scheint, als gemahne er die Sonne, die noch hinterm Horizont ist, nicht mehr so verschwenderisch ihre Hitze auf die Erde zu werfen. Ihre Hochzeit sei eh vorbei und auch sie soll abnehmen.
      Nach 10 km über die Meseta-Hochebene erreichte ich Hontanas. Am Ortseingang grüßte mich die Ermita Santa Brigida - die irischen Mönche scheinen ihr Licht bis hierhin geworfen zu haben. Das kleine Dorf ist sehr pittoresk, ich bin ein wenig an das Elsass erinnert.
      In der Kirche steht das Tafelkreuz von San Damiano aus Assisi. Im Altar gibt es eine kleine warm erleuchte Herzkammer, aus der einladend ein Kind glänzte.
      Auf einem Foto entdecke ich den Mann, der sich Rotwein aus einem Kännchen auf die Stirn gießt. Der läuft dann links und rechts der Nase in seinem weit vor geöffneten Mund. Diese Attraktion konnte ich vor 20 Jahren bewundern. Ich muss also schon einmal hier gewesen sein.
      Unterwegs riefen mich noch Sabeth und Louisa an. Sie brauchten Informationen, wie sie mein eAuto starten können, mit dem sie gleich zum Rosenhof fahren und Annegret und 1.000 anderen Frauen beim LandArt-Tanzen zuschauen.

      Sunrise in Hontanas, Sunset CastroJeriz

      We were up & out walking before the sun rose this morning. Don't be too impressed as sunrise is at about 7:45!

      We met a new friend Susan from Melbourne Austrslia who walked with us to our destination this afternoon.

      We visited multiple churches. We saw amazing ruins ( Ruinas del convention de San Anton siglio XIV).

      We were given 2 beers as a welcome gift when we arrived at our hostel. Andres & Sabrina from Columbia & Argentina are the new owners of the hostel we are staying in. They are young. They have good music playing in the bar & positive & welcoming energy. It feels like a nice way to end the day that we are staying here!      Read more

      Erstmals Müsli zum Frühstück bekommen und dann erstmal 11 km durch die durchaus schöne Meseta gewandert, in Begleitung eines reizenden Ehepaares aus Vermont, beide 71 und seit 43 Jahren verheiratet. Former health care employees (like literally every other person :))). So ging der halbe Tag schnell um und es fand sich auch ein Plätzchen in der favorisierten Herberge. Ich wurde von der Camino Community für 2 Kochaktionen (Nudeln und Gemüse!) so über den grünen Klee gelobt, dass ich weder Gemüse schneiden noch abwaschen muss, so lange ich nur aus quasi nix ein vegetarisches Essen zaubere. Heute neue Herausforderung: Es gibt nur einen Reiskocher, habe aber schon ein Risitto-Rezept gefunden, das man da zubereiten kann.
      Creepy situation:
      Nach einem Aggressionsausbruch eines Pilgers während der Mittagspause, sind hier alle sehr verstört. Ein Pilger kannte ihn von der Nacht davor und konnte den Typen beruhigen, aber wenn der nochmal so austickt, bin ich die Erste, die die Polizei ruft.       San Anton

      Between Hornillos del Camino (our stay last night) and Castrojeriz (our stay tonight) we were blessed to visit the ruins of San Anton once a major stopping point for pilgrims on the Camino.

      There is now a small albergue there—but without running water!

      We purchased some cold drinks, sat in the shade, chatted at length with a couple from Brazil (a blessed time!), and then wandered around the ruins taking pictures and imagining what it would have been like in earlier, busier times.

      A magnificent ruins! As Brandon observed, we seldom se ruins like this in the US, in part because our history is so much shorter and in part because we tear down the old and replace it with something new.

      Camino Day 16: SanBol to Itero dela Vega

      From Arroyo de San Bol, it was a long and very fun day to our destination as there was so much entertainment along the way!

      We walked like 6km to our breakfast stop in the cute little village of Hontanas and from there, another 5km to the ruins of San Anton. When we got to the ruins, there was a couple volunteers who started to talk to me in Spanish. When I told them I was from Venezuela, they asked if I would dance. They said someone was going to sing so I told them if someone would sing that I’d happily dance but the music was opera! 🙃

      A Russian pilgrim ended up putting on a 20min show in the ruins for donativos and it was so beautiful we stayed until the end and chatted to him for a while. Everyone else in our group had moved on and missed it!

      From there we kept walking to Castrojeriz where we visited a church turned museum that projected a short film about the camino on the ceiling. After a quick bite in town, we started the climb up to Alto de Mostelares, the highest point in the plains offering spectacular views all round.

      We were going to meet up with David and stay at a small chapel 3km from the top that only had 8 beds and no electricity but half way through the climb, he called to let us know that there were only 2 beds left and there was 3 of us 🤷🏻‍♀️

      We had to walk an extra 3km to the following town to a donativo hostel that didn’t have the greatest reviews but ended up being another lovely place with one of the most generous communal dinners! The Camino always provides ✨

      All of the Aussies on the Camino were there that night! But I spent most of the time talking to the French lady sitting in front of me on the dinner table. She couldn’t speak English so with my basic French (and a lil help from google translate at times) we talked and talked. I found out she has cancer and had already undergone like 6 surgeries, with another one coming up soon. She was also advised against doing the Camino but she was determined to show her cancer who’s the boss! She had also started her walk in France so she’d been going way longer than me. We talked about life, and love and so many beautiful things, I hope wherever she is on her journey now, she’s patting herself on the back for not giving up!
