    • Day 34

      In Muxia

      May 14 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

I have walked from Finisterre to Muxia (or the reverse) at least 5 times. 30 km, 600m. This time it was hard. The ascent at the end was a killer for me. If I’m lucky enough to walk this route again, I will split those 30 km in half. The little town of Lires, which used to have one old pensión and café, has had a small camino explosion.

The weather was fine, with a little drizzle as I left and a few drops as I arrived. But nothing in between. I took a detour to the Lires beach, hoping the bar would be open, but it wasn’t. So I sat on a bench, looking out at the beautiful water, chomping on some nuts and drinking water, instead of my longed-for Fanta de Limón.

I wasn’t feeling particularly social when I arrived, and after a good lunch alone of sea bass and razor clams, I walked out to the church on the rocky point. It’s a spectacular setting. The waves were ferociously pounding on the rocks and the tide was so high it would have been dangerous to walk out on any of them like I usually do. So I just sat, with the wind blowing like crazy and contemplated. The end of another walk —it always happens. No profound revelations after this month of walking, just a sense that life is good and that I am extremely lucky to have been able to walk another beautiful camino.

It’s raining here and it looks like sunset will happen behind a thick veil of clouds. But I’m not disappointed because this has been a really full camino.

Tag 48 Muxia und mal entspannen

      June 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

      Mal schauen wies weitergeht.

      Muxia

      June 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

A lazy morning - what a treat it is not to have to pack up each morning and jam that big sleeping bag into that tiny stuff sack.

We found the correct path this morning up to the cross on Monte Corpino that we tried to find on our scramble up the hill yesterday. The view from there was amazing - it is such a beautiful place.

We went back for another seafood lunch at A Marina and was joined by Eleanor from Dublin.

We stopped at the supermarket and the bakery for some wine, bread and cheese which we had for our dinner on the terrace this evening while we watched the seagull parents and chicks on the roofs around us. They are very entertaining.

It has been such a relaxing and enjoyable few days.

    • Day 3

      Muxía á Dumbria

      July 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

      Lago to O Logoso

      September 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

More farming lessons: they put the corn harvest in pits, drive over it to flatten it, then put plastic over. Good cattle feed. Corn seems to be the primary crop in this area. Corn ➡️ cows ➡️ manure ➡️ corn. The circle of life. I did see sheep as well. And one heron, can you find it? The cemeteries here are beautiful.Read more

      Camino Fisterre Day 4

      September 18, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I met two Canadians yesterday- Dennis and Carl, travelling with Pirash from Hungary. We had beer 🍺 together. Nancy and I made a pasta dinner in the albergue kitchen. Nice little town but not much for restaurants. The Xunta albergue is quite nice, very modern. More pilgrims than yesterday but not quite full. Today I will see the ocean!Read more

      As Lires to Buxan

      September 19, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

I thought we were finished with hills but we were not. As the temperature climbed, so did we. Or at least lots of ups and downs. There was the ocean now and then, to get my hopes up. And a small lumber operation. Then something wonderful! A donativo rest stop. At first I thought it was a sketchy bar, then the fellow wouldn’t take our money, pointing instead to the donation jar. It was very well stocked, and came at just the right time. Great ambiance, once we knew it wasn’t a sketchy bar. Check out the video.Read more

    • Day 30

      Dumbria to Muxia (23km)

      October 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Short day, not too much elevation and the destination is 5*****. Another day of going through small hamlets, usually connected by dirt paths up and down and around the monte. I met an elderly señora waiting for the grocery store truck. She told me she would not be able to stay in the village if it weren’t for these wandering, honking trucks. And I talked for a while with a man cutting the “maleza” with a scythe. He gave me a few basic pointers, but I declined the chance to whack with it, especially when I saw how sharp it was.

There’s a beautiful Romanesque church in Moraime, about 5 km before town. My favorite piece is the Last Supper depicted over a side doorway. I have never been able to get inside, but if I had been willing to stick around for about three hours, I could’ve gotten in today with the women coming to set up for a wedding tomorrow. Maybe next time.

The entrance into Muxia is nice. Truth be told, it’s not a very picturesque place, except for the sanctuary at the tip on the rocks. Very good seafood restaurants, and a pretty lively atmosphere. Since my room in the hospital wasn’t ready when I arrived, I just dropped off my backpack and went out to the sanctuary. Sitting on those rocks and watching the waves crash is a really nice place to reflect on things. Even on a windy cloudy day.

I will go back for sunset but it might be a washout.

      Quieroso

      May 30 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 17 °C

      Stage 7 Camiño dos Faros
Muxia is one of the 'zero points' of the Caminos: many people don't finish in Santiago but walk on, to Muxia and to Fisterra. Our route doesn't follow the usual path as we are still skimming the edgest edge of the coast, where the other routes take walkers inland and on a site direct and shorter route.
We found it possible to chop off a couple of headlands today, so that we could really enjoy the bits we walked and arrive at our accommodation with time to nap, wash, chill out. Another dull day of weather, but that made it again a very comfortable temperature for walking. There was a windy swish swash swosh at the top of the mountain range, most unexpected and puzzling: was it the wind dancing deliriously through the treelines creating a peculiar vortex, or perhaps actually an alien spaceship hovering there in the cloud? ... the sun burnt off the cloud very suddenly and the more ordinary explanation - another row of powerful wind turbines - proved to be correct. I wonder who thought to suggest that?

A hamlet with a few dilapidated buildings, a few inhabited ordinary-looking homes and a few immaculately restored holiday places. And a gorgeous ancient mama-dog who came a-calling and a-begging for attention. Our accommodation was beautiful.

Wonderful surprise menu for dinner, a shared bottle of wine with another guest; a happy end to the penultimate day of walking.

Tomorrow we will go to the end of the world.

    • Day 24

      Faro Touriñán

      December 10, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C
