      la rioja

      October 19, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Read more

      Najera

      June 17, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌩️ 64 °F

We got an early start today and thought we would be in Najera by lunch, the maybe go further and take some distance off tomorrow’s trek. However, we took a wrong turn somewhere (or missed a turn) and got off course. Settled into a delightful old albergue on the outskirts of Najera just in time to shelter from a tremendous thunderstorm! Lights have gone out once or twice.

Spotted a bar/cafe that offers a delightful selection of paellas so we’re headed there for dinner in a bit. And I’m hoping to pick up a walking stick before dinner. Left my trekking poles at home, never used them enough to understand their value, but will benefit from at least one for balance sake.

Here’s a few pictures from today.

      Getting into the rhythm

      September 2, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

It has been a few days since I last posted an update and now I feel we are finding our camino rhythm. Get up,grab a coffee, walk, then stop for brekkie usually a potato frittata another coffee, walk some more. Eventually we reach albergue/hostal. Then first job is a shower 🛀and to wash our clothess then a Náp or rest. Then we go in search of food.🍕 .Bars And cafés offer pilgrim meals around 9-16 euros which are 3 course meals with Bread water wine. Often they can tend to be a very carby offering. They differ in quality and amount. sometimes we buy food and cook ourselves and sometimes we get a pilgrim meal.. Tonight we made egg bacon🍳(for mo)omelette(for mark)and chips.we are in santa domingo de la calzada staying in a cisteine monastery, not the cistine chapel as I first said!
Luxury tonight as we have our own room for the princely sum of 10 euros. It was 7 for a bunk in the dorm. Its basic but at least we have it to ourselves and no one can hear us snore!💤
We walked 15 klms to get here it was a beautiful mild day. In fact its a bit cool tonight. The landscape is fields and vineyards with mountains⛰ in the distance.blackberries, fennel, pink thistles and sweet peas Line the path. Today we had a few hills to climb but we are better at those now. Im still slower than others but i dont care,i put some music on my phone put my ear buds in and bop down the road. Im singing away and enjoying it so much. Sometimes i even dance if the song takes me.
Today we had a discussion about happiness as we walked and what we think it is. A nice little bit of thoughtful introspection.🧠
Since i last wrote we sampled the delights of tapas in Logroño. Theres a whole street of tapas only bars, each competing to deliver ( i didnt see any liver though, bum bum!)the tastiest morsels. So many yummy things.we got a mushroom fritters, cow cheese with berries and i had pork slice also. It was a buzzing place with familes out on friday Night. Back in our hostal we could hear the partying carrying on till the next morning, only at 6 ish did it cease. Just in time for me to catch an hours kip before we set off for Navarrete. 😪
The path out of Logroño was through a lovely green expanse of recreation grounds so it was a walk in the park really.😂

      Day 12: Navarette to Nájera

      May 29, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

      Mileage: 10.5 miles or so
      Elevation gain: 722
      Elevation loss: 791
Weather: beautiful and sunny until we were already in Nájera, when it rained pretty hard for a little while
      Total mileage: 121.75

Today’s walk of under 11 miles and not too much climbing felt almost like a day off! I’m also figuring out how to help my feet feel better, which is a relief.

We were expecting rain today, but clear skies met us on our leisurely 8:00 start. There was a bakery next to our lodging but they didn’t have coffee!! We had a couple of nice breaks today and the first one included cafes con leche, so it worked out.

Even with the leisurely start we arrived in Nàjera relatively early, so we enjoyed some treats and actually did a little shopping! Nothing exciting - I’m going to try some new socks and we had run out of chocolate. Another great day.

      1. Not so many wildflowers now but these hollyhocks wished us well as we left Navarrete.
      2. The eponymous gate of Puerta del Cementerio.
      3. Detail from the gate. Was it St. Michael who slayed the dragon?
      4. So. Many. Vineyards today. Made for a beautiful walk.
      5. The town of Ventosa from a distance.
      6. and 7. More beautiful vineyards
      8. These distinctive stone huts served as shelter for farmers at one point, apparently.
      9. We enjoyed pinchos (tapas) and sangrias (which we saw hilariously translated as “bleedings” in Viana) at an outdoor bar before the rain started.
      10. Street in Nájera after the rain

      Navarrete

      September 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌩️ 21 °C

Another village on a steep hillside.
All the churches are massive, and the decorations inside are over the top.
While we waited for our accommodation to open, we had a delicious lunch, bacon, and eggs. Every pilgrim meal consists of hot chips with a piece of meat, not inviting at all.
We are staying at Bein Camino Hostal in a private room with proper beds and our own bathroom, with a full-size towel. It is glorious.
We had just finished dinner when the thunderstorm and rain started. We can hear rolling thunder, love it.

    • Day 11–12

      Viana to Navarrete

      April 24 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Today as we passed through the very large city of Logroño, we left the beautiful basque region of Navarra, and entered the region of La Rioja.

La Rioja is the second smallest autonomous community in Spain and the smallest along the Camino Francés. This region has also has made its mark on the world as one of Spain's largest producers of wine. We will enjoy it while it lasts, which is only about 60km worth of walking along the camino. 🍷Read more

      Day 12

      September 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Left Navarrete 6.45 arrived Azfroa 12 noon
      14k today.
Lyn and I have been through the most incredible thunderstorm we have ever had, thunder, ⛈️ lightning 🌩 hail. The lightning was red in colour. The rain fell in torrents, thank goodness we managed to get our ponchos on before it hit us. We did turn back for a while, then realised it was moving away from where we were heading.
We managed to get to Ventosa, where we caught a taxis to Njaera and then walked in the rain to Azfroa, where we will stay the night.

    • Day 13 - Logroño to Navarrete - 13km

      September 11, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Today is the day. I am in Navarrete and I have decided last minute to stay in the same hotel as Jörg and I did 14 years ago.

I was full of energy this morning and ready to tackle any hike, and it turns out that the walk today was quite easy, mostly paved pathway. It was also cloudy and a little wet from overnight thunderstorms, so the heat wasn’t a factor either. All perfect to arrive in this perfect place.

Can I take this opportunity though to rant about a pet peeve I have. I usually like to break every 4-5 kms - after 8-10 kms I like to take off my boots for a bit. It helps ease the muscles and rest the feet and gives me strength to keep going. Invariably, almost every time, someone asks me “are you ok?” I don’t think I look that worn out or sore. Today someone asked me when I was sitting on a bench, eating an apple, after only 5kms. I know I didn’t look worn out for sure this time as I just started and it was an easy part. My pet peeve is I am sure that they wouldn’t ask a man sitting alone or a young athletic woman. It isn’t only men who ask, women ask as well. And really, has anyone ever answered “no, can you help me?”. I would understand if they just saw me fall or something, but just sitting and taking a break on the trail, it is a little too much. Ok, rant over.

I am sitting waiting for my laundry to be done. They wash clothes here, but don’t dry, so I am waiting to get them so I can hang them out on my private balcony to dry. Then I am going to wander around town. Jörg and I didn’t see much of the town as we arrived late in the afternoon so by the time we showered and had dinner, it was dark.

It turns out the hotel hung my clothes for me in their laundry room so I went out and had a pilgrims meal early. The usual time is around 7pm but then it is so much food just before bed. I then went in the church in the town and lit a candle for Jörg. My last stop was to the Pharmacy. I have pimples again (at age 55, they are never ending), plus I have a few small blisters so I wanted to ask the best way to treat them (so many different views on this subject). Basically, I keep doing what I am doing, but got more supplies.

I am in for the night. I have decided to treat myself and ship my bag for tomorrow. I am doing a 20km day and they said rain so why not. So many people do it now. It will be a big help for me tomorrow.

Throwback to 2009 from Julie’s Journal

Right now I am in a hotel room (1 star mind you) in Navarette. When the day started, it was our plan to go to Logroño which was 20km. The morning started as usual with pain. I had woken up every couple hours and at 4am I decided to take an Aleve.

We wanted to stay in Lograno but when we went into several hotels they took one look at us and my bed bug bites and said they were full. Rather than try and find a hostel in town we decided to just keep walking. Navarrete was 12kms more.

When we arrived in the town, Joerg turned to me with arms open wide waiting for a hug. After we hugged, he took my hand and held it for a good minute. At one point, I could see he was a little shy so he started to swing the hand he was holding. Once we got into town, it was like a big family reunion. So many people we had met along the way were here.

I still wanted a hotel room and we saw a one star place and I decided to let Joerg take a look. It was good and only 25E. They are actually doing my laundry right now for 5E. After we checked into the hotel and we were sitting on the edge of the bed, I told him it wasn’t the hotel I originally wanted, but it was nice and I leaned over and kissed his cheek.

Throwback to the next morning in Navarrete

Well, today my life has changed forever. I woke up at 7:10am and it was nice not to hear people packing bags and not having to pack my bag by flashlight. Joerg woke up too and we both said “one more hour” and he kissed me. When we awoke again, we just lied in bed and relaxed. It was only a kiss, but I know it was a big step for Joerg. It moves our relationship from friends to something more.

Rested and Refreshed & Mystery Solved

      September 4 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Mystery Solved...I stopped at a pharmacy and when I said I had blister trouble, he turned his sign over to say closed. This meant business. He looked at my feet, my socks, my shoes, and my orthotics. Finally, he said, aha! My orthotics were 1 cm too short for my shoes and kept slipping causing the blisters. Ugh!

Solution: buy the best insoles they have, cut so they fit, soak, cover, and wrap my blisters for 3 days.

Today I walked in no pain for the first time! The green tape is KT tape and I watched many videos to learn how to wrap my feet and knees correctly. I need to support my flat feet since I don't have my inserts in. So far, so good.

I went 6 miles on the trail today in an overcast cool day. I think there should be special stickers just for getting out of the cities! It took me over 2 hours to find the trail. I concidered it a city tour that people pay money for. I saw all sorts of interesting neighborhoods.

We are speeding up our lives and working harder, in a futile attempt to slow down and enjoy it.
Paul Hawken. What can you do today to slow down?
