      Day 5

      June 27 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

It's great to have a short hike, at the albergue by 2:30. I'm still high in the mountains, spent much of the morning walking through cloud, couldn't see more than 30 yards for the first couple of hrs. But once I got through the clouds it was class. The albergue is so cool, it's the old brick building, maybe the last photo.Read more

      Hill fort

      September 18, 2021 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

This is my fourth time on the Primitivo. Every time I have wanted to visit the Bronze Age hill fort about 5 km beyond the typical stopping point. So this year since I’m sleeping only in private rooms, I saw my chance! There’s a little casa rural right there near the excavations! So I made my reservations, walked on through Grandas, and got to Castro only to learn that the hill fort is closed for renovations!!!

Oh well, the museum was open and it was great. Showing how the hill fort went from Bronze Age to Iron Age to Roman. That seems like such an abrupt change that is hard to get your head around. But this Castro was “Romanized” and has a small villa.

When I left the museum, I saw an “elderly woman” (aka someone about my age) who was sitting out on a bench. We started to talk, and she told me that she was the owner of the land where the Castro was discovered. She was growing wheat on the land and one day her brother found a spoon there. An ancient spoon it turned out. From there about a half hour of stories about how the archaeologists worked on her land and they eventually sold it in the early 1990s for 2,000,000 pesetas. I love these encounters, ending with the señora telling me that life is a gift and it’s short. Don’t we know it.

      Castro

      September 24, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Today was the first day that I’ve felt less than enthusiastic about walking. Not sure why but when we set off in the drizzle I quite enjoyed it even though it was raining and my poncho isn’t 100% waterproof. Stopped for a coffee and cash point then walked on through some pretty wooded bits to arrive at our Albergue in time for lunch. The food here is fabulous and very cheap. We played Spanish monopoly for 1000s of pesetas then felt so cold we went in bed in our clothes trying to warm up!!Read more

    • La Mesa - Castro

      June 14, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

      In Castro angekommen

      September 1, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

      Early rainy start

      June 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

I woke early about 5 and set off about 6 in a damp misty morning past the guard dog of Castro- its good to have a stick one wanted to come in behind for a nip.

it was supposed to rain at 1 but the spitting and most got heavier so by 9 my boots and socks and lower legs were totally soaked I also didn't meet anyone on the road for most of the day so it felt like a bit of a miserable day.Read more

      Spanish directions

      June 8, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

So I knew this would happen somewhere but today we passed the border from Asturia province into Galacia and I managed to get lost twice although an angel did come along to get me back on the path the first time - the second time I climbed a really step path for about 800 m so I was pretty grumpy by the time I got back on the path. Also there was nothing open so I ended up doing the whole 20 km with breakfast or anything to eat.

fortunately for the last piece of the walk I met Antonio an Electrician from somewhere that sounds like Mallorca in Spain. I was fantasizing about my Caliente Sjokalade which he shouted me when I arrived.

At this stage I was at cold and tired of waking in the road and not wanting a 30 km repeat tomorrow so I booked a room in Lugo and called a taxi. On the way I partly fell asleep and started feeling really worried about how long the ride was taking, it turns out I skipped 2 days walking not one. I was worried the taxi was going to be over a 100 Euros but it was just 65 which was a relief, still as much as it will cost me to fly from London to Sofia but hey the hour shower and bed felt heavenly and I'm booked for a foot massage tomorrow morning at 9. Yay

Here at last time for a treat or 5

      June 7, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Finally arrived at Castro feeling hot, thirsty and tired but not particularly sore.

I settled with a couple of drinks - Spain had a fabulous round of girly beers and another great local cider and the fresh almond cake. Only problem was I forgot I had brought a selection of treats at an organic delicatessen in Grande de Salime - a challenge but one I rose too manually.Read more

No tot va a ser patir...

      August 9 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

      Dia 6.

Ian i jo compartim un Cachopo😋.

      Bona nit i bon camí.
