      Logrono

      October 22, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      May 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

It was in Logroño that I first understood what it meant to stay in a Parroquial Albergue. The warm welcome, the care for everyone who arrives, and with the pilgrim spirit.
There were not enough beds for all the pilgrims waiting at the door, but the volunteers organized thin mattresses in a large room that was actually the auditorium of the church. No pillows, of course. No blankets, either. But, it was very nice.
After organizing my stuff and taking a shower, I went out to get something to eat. I didn't have lunch. In fact, I wanted to try something that the people in Spain use to call "ir de pinchos". This expression means going to different bars and ordering a caña (beer) with a tapa, or a glass of wine with a tapa. There is a small and narrow street in Logroño that is perfect for this. It was delicious.
Back at the Parroquial Albergue, after a short rest, we all had a community dinner together, where the pilgrims are supposed to cook, to help to serve, and after help with the dishes.
After dinner, we all went to the to Iglesia de Santiago el Real, which is attached to the Albergue. We followed a passage through the Albergue directly to the altar of the church. There we experienced a small ceremony in which, in the dark, holding a candle and passing it from hand to hand, each of us said a prayer in our native language, while the others listened and paid attention, even though they did not understand the words. The idea was simply to share our feelings.

      Day 09 - Logroño -> Ventosa

      May 10, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

I was not too worried about the time because I had already decided not to do the traditional stage to Nájera, 29 km. My intention was to stop in Sotés or Ventosa, about 20 km from Logroño.
Leaving Logroño, we crossed the large and beautiful park of La Grajera. After Logroño the area is flat and with large and beautiful vineyards.
Arriving in Navarrete we can see the ruins of the pilgrim hospital of San Juan de Acre (siglo XII). Navarrete is a charming medieval village where you can stop to take a rest, have a coffee and even eat something.
Since the walk was short, only 20 km, I arrive early at the albergue.
After organizing my stuff and taking a shower, I was on my way to the laundry to wash my clothes when I saw Eva at the reception of the albergue. She had just arrived together with a couple from Colorado, USA, Mark and Sonja, whom she introduced to me. It was good to see Eva again. We spent some time talking and enjoyed the end of the afternoon in the garden of the albergue.
In the evening we had a nice dinner together, Eva, Mark and Sonja, and Miguel, a young Italian guy, that Eva had met a few days before and introduced to us.

      Noch ein paar Bilder…

      April 22 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

      September 20, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

C’est le temps du dodo 😴 maintenant 😊

      Logroño to LaGuardia

      September 17, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Met up with my Skadaddle Espana bike tour in Logroño. It was the local festival for the start of the wine harvest. Everyone out celebrating, music, bands and frivolity.

Logrõna is on the Camino de Santiago track along the Río Ebro and we saw plenty of pilgrims.

Wine tasting and tour at Casa Primicia, one of the oldest wineries in Rioja with a very interesting history.

Very hot cycling weather. Today 83km, 1550m climbing.

      A rest day in Logroño

      March 24, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Today there is a truckers demonstration here in Logrono.

We are ending our Camino. My wife fell the first day on the way down to Zubiri and hurt her wrist. Finally, today we had the wrist looked at and it was in fact broken. The doctor had to re break the wrist to set it properly. Plus the doctor wants us to get the wrist X-rayed every week for the next 4 weeks. With the cast and everything else we can’t see how we can finish. So today I rebooked our flight home. Very sorry our adventure is ending.Read more

      Walking with Ignacio!

      October 10, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

The word Camino is a beautiful Spanish word. It means 'the way' and this term has been used for many Caminos which join the Camino Frances which is the one most taken to Santiago de Compostella.

Inigo Lopez de Loyola, or Ignacio, which was his name before he took the Latin name Ignatius, decided to become a peregrino or pilgrim and set off on his own pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1522. He would have been familiar with the Camino de Santiago and seen many a pilgrim before he became one himself!

He began his walk from his home in Loyola and instead of going north via Pamplona into Navarre country, where the French had occupied, he would have walked through Spanish territory to be on the safe side! This led him down to the town of Logrono where we crossed paths with his way- the Camino Ignaciano as it is now known.

From Logrono to the village of Navarette, the two paths become one and then the Ignatian path veers South heading for Montserrat and Manresa and eventually Barcelona. The Camino Frances continues West toward Najera and onward about 570k to Santiago. This is our path!

Logrono sees us leave Navarre behind and enter the next region of La Rioja- famous for its Bodegas vineyards. I'm pretty sure these would not have been around in 1522 when Ignatius passed through! I think he would have walked closer to the river, following its path to the next valley and bringing him to the next town or village. The hillsides would have been thick with forests also- a hazard for pilgrims due to being ambushed by bandits and thieves.

It was very hot walking, without much shade and we struggled over the long stretches into Navarette. I pondered how Inigo did this with a limp! A pilgrim staff must have been a much needed piece of equipment.

Flanked by jagged edged mountains ( what would the contour intervals be like on the map here boys?) and following the river Arga as we walked, Logrono was a lovely town with a huge Cathedral and they run bulls through the streets too- El Torro is alive and well here! See pic!

However, I can understand Ignatius wanting to go to small villages- people are so warm. This village also had its share of trials- evidence of many sieges and attacks- no wonder they were all built on hills and fortified! Most of the old city had been ruined, the church being the only building surviving intact.

There was also the ruins of a medieval pilgrims hospital there he probably visited- the walking must have been so difficult. Bruised feet, injury, illness, fatigue and hunger would necessitate a stop at a pilgrim hospital.
However, no pilgrim hospital for us, a bed, a meal and sleep was all in order! We are very fortunate- these simple things were given with such kindness and care.

Walking with Ignatius- muchos grathias and Buen Camino!
