      Day 11

      September 1, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

Left Logrono 6.45 am arrived Navarrete 11.45am
12.5ks today. It is our rest day.
Very little signposts to show the way out of Navarete this morning. It took 45 minutes to get out to the city fringe. We walked mostly on paved footpaths today, very hard on our feet. We need to get some washing up to date and have time to rejuvenate.
We have noticed that the locals are very helpful, and even though the language barrier is there, we get ourselves understood. Lots of laughter.
We are managing with our packs really we now we don't have the intense heat.

      Longono to Najero

      October 10, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

Another long day, 29 kilometers. But at the end of the day, there was a pizza pie and some beers. Walk thru a lot of farm land. There were some long distances between cities.

Motivation here is the cafes --- food and drink.

Usually, the cafes serve sandwiches and totidas (quiche) . Drinks could be Coke, other soda, beer, or liquor 🤔.

The Camino App ---- Camino Ninja --- is terrific for tracking the trail and finding places to stay close to the Camino trail.

I usually get 8 to 9 hours of rest for the next day.

      Miss you all.

      Logrono

      May 10, 2024 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

      Day 8 Logrono
Distance from Torres del Rio 22kms

A beautiful sunrise as we left Torres del Rio and started up what they call “the knee wrecker”. We navigated the tricky path for several kilometers up and down uneven rocky terrain the day was hot and sunny and we sought shade whenever we could. Bought fresh fruit at a village market drank freshly squeezed orange juice spied white asparagus and exotic mushrooms. Passed by cute Spanish cottages a 12th century church and a group doing the Camino by horseback. We kept up a steady walking pace to enter Logrono early afternoon. The temperature had reached 28c and we were keen to escape the heat. We were happy to sit in the city square with a cool drink and listen to the many bands making their way through the streets. Logrono is known for its tapas and festivities and the city was alive with music.
      Heading to Najera tomorrow (30kms).

      Santander here i come

      June 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

A trip to the bus station that ought to have taken 20 minutes has taken me an hour and ten minutes panicking that I was gonna miss my bus, picked up the pace and kept asking people on the street "Por favor, Ayudami, yo necesito El autobus estacion gracias...!! The Ayudami politely really works?! People laugh at me, a grown adult asking for help!! Glad to make their day and got here with twenty minutes to spare?

Just a couple of photos of breakfast this morning, so you see Sarah I took your advice! Grapefruit! A photo of the map to get here after I got lost..and the bus station that has people's homes right above it.! Imagine living there!

And we're away! Leaving logrono !! A cool 20 degrees here at the moment in Victoria...on way to Santander.nearly there, now 25 degrees out.. we've been through Victoria, Bilbao, la rozas, and I've seen the sea! What a wonderful sight!

      Bus ride to Najera

      September 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

So! My report from yesterday about feeling better was a little premature. David is feeling better! I am super sick now though. And with good reason! I tested positive for COVID. So we are hanging out in the hotel room in Nájera waiting impatiently for my immune system to beat up on the little COVID’s! 🦠

We don’t actually have pictures of much today as mostly we were masked and slinking from one hotel room to the bus and into another room. I have to figure out how to get David some food tonight. He gets disoriented so he can’t go on his own and I need to keep my germy self away from other people as much as possible. I haven’t eaten anything but a cup of yogurt and some soda and water in the last day and a half.

It seems like every person I’ve known who’s had COVID in the past few months has had a mild case. I’m not sure why I’m so sick! Hopefully I’ll have better news to report tomorrow!

      Day 9 - Logrono

      September 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Another day of big climbing in the hills: some vey steep sections but with nice long rolling descents. Found a squashed tarantula sized scorpion on the road - caution needed before sitting on any rocks. Another early start but we arrived before 3pm. We were greeted by the Rioja wine festival in full swing. The whole city is full and it is clear that red wine has been liberally spread about. Good atmosphere though and we’ll head out later to watch the marching band parades!
      52kms cycled today, 900m up, 950m down.

      7. Tag: Los Arcos - Logroño

      July 9, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Read more

      Los Arcos to Logroño

      April 10, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

117 miles done. 383 to go.

Lunch was “the pilgrim’s meal” as typically served in establishments along the Camino. Huge salad with a local cheese selection, perfectly breaded chicken breast with potatoes, a flambéed apple dessert, espresso, AND an entire bottle of local sauvignon blanc. 15 euros! That’s crazy, right? I only had two glasses of wine from the bottle because I still had 6 miles of walking post-lunch.

Listened to 7 chapters of Nadia Bolz Weber’s audiobook, Shameless, while walking this morning and afternoon. There’s so much that resonates with memories of my upbringing in nondenominational churches in the 80s and 90s and thus my theological understanding shaped by purity culture, “kissing dating goodby,” WWJD, and then 8 years of reparative therapy that I was a part of, between Illinois and Colorado, by my own volition. There’s a lot to unpack with this book/audiobook, and if you’ve had a similar journey and would find it helpful to ever talk about God, faith, sexuality, fear, shame, etc., I’m glad to listen and share our life experiences together. I’m very grateful to those along the way that have been a lifeline to me… some of you who might read this know that you have been that for me, then, and still now. Thank you.

Today was a super long walking day. Not challenging in the ascents and descents, but challenging in length… stamina of keeping moving over the long distance. I’ve started to notice others who are walking the Camino route limping, slowing down, taking more breaks, and changing out bloody bandages on their feet. I’m grateful my feet are holding up so far, though I’m prepared in case I start to get blisters or hurt myself. I’ve got my routine of stretching, massaging my feet and calves, and applying body glide where I’m feeling the rub. It’s worked…so far.

But, in all the care for my feet, I neglected to care for the rest of me. And I got sunburned on the backs of my calves after hiking my pants up in the afternoon heat AND I had some sort of allergic reaction to the hotel soap this afternoon. So, there’s that. Not a fun combo. 😞 I gotta be more careful!

Also, they mix red wine and Coca-Cola here as a cocktail. Kalimotxo is what it is called.
I had to try it. The verdict is in… it’s good and odd. Sweet and tart. Different. Like me 😜

Aujourdhui congé - Lessive - relaxation

      May 9, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

      Buen Camino
