And so it begins, our 4th Camino. Getting ready to drive to JFK for a 10 pm fight to Madrid. We arrive tomorrow in the morning, and we have to get to Atocha for our train to Zaragoza. We start in Zaragoza because it was here that the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint James when he was struggling with his ministry in Iberia. This was the very first Marian apparition and different from all others as Mary was still alive. She asked St James to build her a church and to return to Jerusalem. He did build a Church which would grow into what is now known as the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. Afterwards he returned to Jerusalem and was the first Apostle to be martyred and thus began his journey to Santiago.Read more

We are at JFK. When I booked our tickets with Iberia my login stopped working. But I did get an email from them with our confirmation. After repeated calls to Iberia to fix my account with themI I gave up. I was expecting problems checking in but nope everything went smoothly. Next stop Madrid.Read more

We arrived at the airport in Madrid Monday Mar 14, around 10:30 a.m. Took about an hour to get through passport control because there were a lot of people. Several passengers in line were worried about missing their connecting flights. Once through the passport control we boarded the connector train to T4 and before picking up our baggage we went through the “ health check” where they scanned our QR code and looked at our vaccination cards - very efficient. We had ample time to take the cercanias train to Attocha to catch our train to Zaragoza. We checked into the Hotel Paris Centro which is on the edge of the old quarter.
Went to a Vodafone store got a SIM card with 4 weeks worth of service for 15 euros.
Had a couple of tapas and glass of wine each in the Casa de Comidas La Republicana. Wine was good - called “Care”Read more

Woke up early, had breakfast buffet in the hotel. First stop in our sightseeing list given to us by the tourist office for a one day visit was the Cathedral of our Lady of the Pillar. A beautiful cathedral! We arrived just after mass started so we lucked out. After mass we walked to site number two, the Aljaferia, a fortified moorish medieval palace built during the second half of the 11th century. We passed it on our way from the train station to the hotel and thought it looked beautiful. Though it was nice it just didn’t compare with the Alhambra in Granada or the Alcázar of Seville. There several tour groups there at the same time- the place was packed! After that we had a nice lunch at place called Los Xarmientos Parrilla Aragonesa restaurant advertised as “typical Aragones”. We had the menu of the day and the food was delicious. Afterward we headed over to site number three which was the Cathedral of San Salvador. An amazing place which offered a self guided tour in English, something the Aljaferia did not have. So much beauty, art and history. I felt like we had the place to ourselves as there were less than a dozen people in there at the same time. Tomorrow will be a travel day. Train to Pamplona and then bus to Roncesvalles.Read more

Day 4 - On the train

Walked from the hotel (Hotel Paris) in Zaragoza to the Train station. Took the train from Zaragoza to Pamplona and the bus, the only bus, to Roncesvalles departed at 2:00. Tonight we’ll be in the albergue (so different from our first Camino in 2010 - the big room with 100+ bunks). Dinner at Casa Sabina and mass at 8:00.Read more

Day 5 We begin in Roncesvalles to Zubiri

We stayed in the albergue de peregrinos de Orreags-Roncesvalles. Had dinner at Casa Sabina. It was okay - not like it was 12 years ago when the service was top notch and the food was wonderful. The Albergue although modern is quite noisy. The toilet flushing is particularly loud. And if you have rubber soled sandals it is also noisy. We did not get the breakfast there, we opted to get breakfast on the way.

We did not stop at the first bar in Burquett which was a mistake because the bar near the church where we wanted to stop was not open when we passed so we walked to Espinal for our first coffee. The walk to Zubiri should be renamed “knee crusher”. It was really a tiring walk. There may be an alternate road route and if there is then take it! It is a very rocky trail and very slippery when wet and it rained most of the day beginning in Roncesvalles. It actually is quite dangerous, Cullen fell twice (no injuries) and I once and got a bad sprained wrist. We did not make a reservation in Zubiri. Was hoping to stay at Palo de Arellano but it was complete according to their website. We checked into Albergue Zlbaldika (private)where we stayed 12 years ago (private) and got a double room with shared bath for both of us for 44 euros. The proprietor , Maria, was most kind and extremely helpful. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for private accommodation In Zubiri. Wanted to stay in Ibarrola in Pamplona but they don’t open until AprilRead more

Day 6 - Zubiri to Pamplona

15.2 miles/24.3 Kms. Nice walk today from Zubiri to Pamplona for the most part. No rain today - yippee😁. Maybe one bar on the way to Pamplona. We didn’t see any type of tienda to stop for provisions. There was a man, Juan, in the middle of nowhere (4-6 k before Pamplona) selling fruits and beverages - a very welcome sight! We decided to stay in Paderborn tonight. We stayed here in 2010. Very acceptable. 7 euro for bed, 3 for breakfast and they will do the laundry. 3.50 to wash and 3.50 to dry. We asked for a double room for the two us which they didn’t have available so we’re in a room with 2 sets of bunk beds. They have another room for 8 people and they will put additional pilgrims in there if anyone else arrives. Hopefully we will be the only ones in our room.Read more

Day 7 - Pamplona to Puente la Reina

25.5 Kms - 15.9 miles. Pamplona to Puente La Reina. We were the only ones in our room last night! (Casa Paderborn ). Had a good sleep and had breakfast at Paderborn which opened March 1 for the season. There were only six pilgrims here last night. It is a long walk out of Pamplona. There was a bar open in Cizur Menor - best cafe con leche so far this trip. The small town of Zariquiegui before the climb To Alto de Perdon had a small tienda selling drinks and snacks. No bar though. Next door was the Albergue San Andres. We thought we might stay in Uterga this night but the Albergue de Perdon was not open. The Casa Baztam (BnB) across the was was open but we didn’t want stay there. We did buy a couple of bocadillos and left. We saw nothing open nor a single person the rest of the way to Puente la Reina. Most of the way today was rough. We had to share the way up to Alto with bicycles. It was narrow, rocky and in some parts muddy. 12 years ago when we climbed the Alto we were asked to pose for pictures for a motorcycle magazine. No such luck this time. 😎We did not have to contend with bikes on the way down but it looked like “improvements” were made dumping truckloads of rocks and parts were quite dangerous. You’d step on a rock and a small avalanche of stones would begin. Cullen fell once and really bent his walking stick. Finally got to Puente la Reina and stopped at Jakue. Albergue rooms unavailable so we got a hotel room with a tub for 59 euros. We need this luxury tonight! Unfortunately the restaurant is closed for an event tonight, but the bar is open!
