      Parque de El Retiro

      July 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

El Retiro is one of the most famous parks in Madrid, just like Central Park is famous in New York. Since this was our last day and we hadn't really visited Madrid, we decided to see as much as possible.

We started by heading to Puerta de Alcala, which is just outside the park. To our disappointment, it was under renovation and was not visible at all. So we just headed straight into the park, and right away, we started finding characters in costumes that were irresistible for Oliver (and for us given how happy it made him).

As we strolled into the park, we found a pond where one could rent a small boat and row around. The pond had turtles and fish that came outside the water every once in a while.

We then headed towards the Crystal House (which was also closed for renovation) and ended our walk in the Fountain of the Fallen Angel, the only monument in the world dedicated to Lucifer. We took a quick refresher just in front of the fountain and took a cab to our next destination: the Royal Palace and Madrid's famous Almudena Cathedral.

      Madrid reunions: take 3

      September 23, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

From Venezuela, to Australia and now in Spain! It was so nice to reunite with Vane and Rafa. Last time I’d seen seen them they were in Oz on their honeymoon and now they had 2 lil ones.

We met at Parque El Retiro which I hadn’t seen yet and spent the whole afternoon walking, chatting and enjoying the scenery. The park was so beautiful and their youngest wanted to walk everywhere holding my hand (what a cutie!).

Lucky I’d gotten used to carrying 10kg on my back because there was a bit of piggy back riding too.

After the park, we went to Santerra, a restaurant they’d opened up a few years before that had been awarded the “Best Croquetas in Spain”. And of course, I could not leave without trying them! So worth it!

The food, the wine and even better company. What a memorable day 🤍

    • Nava de la Asunción To Villeguillo

      September 16, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

A vary nice walk today thru pine forest again. Our first stop was the city of Coca, which had a very nice castle. The castle was built by Moors on the orders of Bishop Alonso de Fonseca who had been given permission to build by Juan II.

Our final destination, is the village of Villeguillo. Here is a tiny bar, run by the famous keekay. When we arrived, he asked what we wanted for supper, we all said fish. At 7:00 we went there, and he brought out a fish dinner that would feed 10! There was also a huge salad that we could not finish. It all was huge but marvellous. We were also joined tonight by Gerard from Ireland.

      Tomorrow 18 Kms to Alcazarén.

      A Visual Feast

      February 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

We avail of the free entry after 6pm to the Museo Reina Sofia to see Picasso’s ‘Guernica”. It is a huge painting but we have to wait for a gap in the crowd to get an uninterrupted view. It is amazing to see it in real life and we get a better understanding of it because so many of Picasso’s preparatory painting are also on display. We see how his ideas for the painting developed over time.
There are several floors in the museum all full of incredible paintings and the building itself is a work of art. There is a covered atrium 4 or 5 storey high. We walk in the open space at just under the roof and the lights from night time Madrid make it magical.
The next morning after a feed of french toast in a lovely cafe, we are ready for more Art appreciation. The Prado museum is next on our hit-list. It is raining heavily when we arrive and there is a queue the length of the building. We are not made of the same tough stuff as these tourists and can’t countenance joining. We approach a steward at the top of the queue and ask about the possibility of free entry in the evening. She kindly opens the barrier and lets us through to the ticket booth to pick up free passes for 6pm. We duck out of the rain and into a second hand shop. While Ruby and Colm entertained themselves dressing up I try to book tickets online for the highly rated illusion museum. The only tickets left for the entire weekend is for 9pm this evening so I book- unsure whether we will have the energy or appetite for it by that late hour!
We have an afternoon siesta and have a quick walk in the Parc del Retiro to energise before of 6pm booking.
The Prado museum is home to so many works of art, its impossible to see them all. We skip whole rooms full of masterpieces. The fact that we didn’t queue or pay to get in, gives us a lovely carefree disposition and we enjoy all we see. We take in works by Goya, El Greco, Caravaggio, Bosch, Rubens, Durer, Raphael and Velazquez and others. It is especially nice to see ‘Las Meninas’ because we had seen so many of Picasso’s studies of this painting in the his museum in Barcelona. Some of paintings we see by Velazquez and Goya are of particular interest to us as they feature in ‘Blood and Gold’ a BBC documentary about Spanish history we have recently watched. Ruby was especially good at spotting them in the museum.
Our feet and eyes are tired when we emerge from Museo Prado and bed is on our minds. We make our way slowly towards our next tourist attraction, filling up on food and fizzy drinks on the way. When we come to the first photo opportunity in the illusion museum a wave of energy hits us and we pose, photograph and laugh our way around for the hour. We are full up with so many visual feasts that when we finally get to bed it feels so nice to close our eyes and go to sleep.

      Madrid - Retiro park

      August 31, 2015 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Madrid has a huge park east of the city center, kind of like the Auckland Domain but bigger, nicer, and more popular. It has tons of paved/dirt walkways, fountains, statues, buildings, and a lake. Very nice.

There's a modern art museum in the park too. Someone had put wooden blocks in various simple patterns. I don't understand modern art.

The Crystal palace there was neat too. Hard to see in the photo but it's all glass and you can see right through it.

      Both my eyes are drunk

      July 10, 2016 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

So we finally decided to venture out today. We headed to city center by metro (about a 15 minute ride). Where we did a "3 hour" self-guided walking tour. It took us about half that time. We call it European time because everyone things it takes alot longer than it does.

We began at the statue of the Bear and Tree Strawberry monument which led to a street that house the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. The architecture around here was stunning! Next stop was the Cibeles Fountain and the Cibeles Palace, where we went in to explore for a bit and take in the history. A little further along was the Gate of Puerta de Alcalá - an archway commissioned by King Charles IV to commemorate the many battles waged by Madrid to keep control of the city.

Afterward, we wandered through El Retiro Park where there were ample opportunities to take some awesome pictures. We stopped by a lake with some gigantic statues surrounding it where people were rowing and enjoying the warm day, and stumbled upon the Glass Palace (which is exactly what it sounds like). Near the glass palace was a pond that was absolutely filled with turtles and black swans.... That's right. Black swans. We sat and watched our animal friend for a bit before we ventured further into the park. Next stop was the fountain of the Fallen Angel (another photo op) and walked out of the park to continue our tour.

Next up, we strolled around the Literary Quarter and Museum Quarter which were full of book shops and - you guessed it - museums.

After the walking tour we decided to grab some lunch at this restaurant that had pasta, fries & sangria for 6.90€. Amazing right!? No, wrong. The food was microwaved... But honestly, we didn't even care cause we were so hungry. It wasn't the worst food I've had.

We got on the metro to head back to our host's house to get ready to go out. We ended up just hanging out for a bit & watching a movie. Breanna obviously took a nap. Nap Queen. Shaunessa & I ate tons of fresh salad we made & watched Step Brothers.

We got ready and went back into the city around 10:30 pm with our host Keri. She took us to a pre-drink bar.. Because the real bars don't open until 12. There we had one of Madrid's known drinks... Beer mixed with lemon Fanta. SOOOO good.

We left the bar after our drink to grab a "street beer" (only 1€ *in Spanish accent) where we sat with all the locals and drank our beer.

We then ran into someone Keri knows & ended up going with him to this rock & roll ish bar/club where we stayed the rest of the night.

So this was a super local bar. Barely anyone spoke English. Whenever someone would speak to us, we would just point to Keri. Because of the humor we have, we obviously used this to our advantage. When people would try to talk to us in English, we pretended that we would only speak french. Later during the night, I started pretending I was deaf. We also taught some people in the bar sign language.

We left around 3:30 to go get some pizza & headed home, where we got to bed around 4.

      Pintin to Marcadoiro

      October 18, 2017 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

      10.18.2017 Wednesday 15.5 miles

Leaving at 8:30 we had cool temperature that required an extra layer under the rain coat. The trail through old farms was relatively easy compared to what we had been walking the last 2 days.

Today we were happy to arrive at the100k mile marker to Santiago de Compostelo. Serria is the 100k town where many pilgrims start their Camino. 100k is the minimum required distance for a certificate from Santiago.

We noticed the trail appeared much more groomed when we left Serria. Mostly wider and easier to travel. There were many fruit trees and thousands of chestnuts. A couple houses had set up food stands with fruit, cakes, drinks that were supported by donations. It's a welcome treat on the Camino. We were lucky to walk through only a few rain showers that lasted 10 minutes.

Our auberque is Abergue Mercadoiro and we have an unusual private suite in a stone house with sitting room and 2, step down to "cave", stone bedrooms!

      Flamenco Night

      April 8, 2017 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

I went on a late afternoon walking tour (I was the only one on it!) and Tatiana, the guide, recommended I go to a Flamenco show at a place called Villa-Rosa that was only a few minutes walk from my room. The show didn't start until 10.30pm as all things are late here! I think that because the guide was with me, they gave me a prime table right on the edge of the stage.

What a fantastic show it was. I didn't really know what to expect but it exceeded all what I thought it would be. The drama and passion of the performers was just the most incredible thing. They sang songs and played the guitar and although I didn't understand a word of It, you could feel the emotion they were investing. The tension in their bodies and faces as they danced, their clothes whirling around and their feet a blur of movement. No flash was allowed on cameras but I am so glad the one on my phone seems to cope well in low light. Choosing just a few photos to share here was a challenge.
