      Camino Day 13 - Astorga

      September 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

An early start this morning with another big day in which we covered another 28 km's.
Out before 6am have us a good couple of hours before the sun comes up fully and most of that was walking beside a busy road.
The scenery has changed and now we are walking through forr forrest and farmland with small villages breaking up the path it was a long hot day with a few tasty hills thrown in to test us, but we arrived in beautiful Astorga by 1pm.
We had no booking for tonight so we were aiming for the local albergue at 7 euros per bed. Very nice old 3 story building.
Clothes washed and all of us showered we wandered off in search of food and drink.
Then back for a rest before heading out for dinner then another early night.

      Randonnée CO2

      May 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

      September 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

      Leon to Hospital de Orbigo

      September 28, 2018 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Hey from Astorga, Spain. I left Leon on Friday morning. I had a 4or 5 mile walk through Leon and the industrial areas just to get out of the city. The days walk was abreast a major highway heading west...pretty much the major truck route from Leon to Astorga...so, not a lot of scenery. I ended the day at the municipal albergue in the town of Villadangos del Páramo. It was the usual bunkroom accommodation and a pilgrim meal. I left around 730 in the morning...a bit more of a pleasant hike as now I am out of the meseta and heading into the hills again. I arrived in the town of Hospital de Orbigo and had to decide to hang there or hike the 16k to Astorga which is a larger city. I decided to stay put as the room situation did not look good for Astorga that night. Another albergue but in a 4 person room which is better than a 20 bed dorm. I pretty much hung out with my roommates for the afternoon...two guys from Australia, and one guy from Germany who pretty much lives out here. Dinner was with two Australian women who I run into each day who wound up in the same albergue. That’s it for now....thank you as always for checking in!Read more

      Villavante from León; 1st Blister

      June 28, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

While walking today I realized I've walked more than 300 miles (500+ km) so far. If we include in-town, it's significantly more.

That's a lot of steps. My phone says 41,000 today alone and that's pretty typical for a 32km (~20 miles) day.

The landscape was attractive, gentle rolling hills with corn, beets (?), Wheat, a flowering plant we don't recognize, sunflowers, some tree farms, flax, and probably others that I've forgotten because my blood sugar is low and my head is half-baked from the heat and the remarkable paucity of shade.

Right after lunch I discovered my first blister! I'm sad and annoyed by this... I've been successful thus far and don't know what factors contributed. Did I tie my shoe too loose/tight? Socks got too damp? A rock? Some dirt?

Whatever happened, my left 2nd toe now has a little (pea sized) painful blister. Phooey.
I'll decide later what to do to mitigate more problems; after a cool beverage.

Despite each of us discovering blisters, the rising heat, and friendly company .... We opted to do another 10km after lunch in ~90 degree weather. They were 10 boring, but flat, km along first a straight paved road then a straight dirt road. Highlights include: León just after dawn; getting some adorable puppy skritches; watching an eagle eat a snake in a hayfield; watching a different raptor glide around a field, presumably hunting; enjoying a lunch of veggie burger w fries; cool breeze on sweaty bodies; several rivers; standing in the overspray of aomw corn irrigation; meeting some nice people along the way; and taking off my shoes. All in all, a very good day.

We made it. Maybe we should have walked another mile to a cute b&b by the river but took the "good enough and here" option of a humble but clean Albergue. Adding "just one more mile" after 20 miles in the peak of afternoon heat.... Is a tough sell.

Emotionally.... I am glad to say that I had a number of chances to check in with myself and feel great. I've shed some of the burdens with which I started this trip and the others feel much more manageable. Doing hard things every day is good therapy. Combining in the opportunity of 5-10hrs of moving meditation helps, too. Life is feeling good.

I'm dang tired. Staying up till 11+ last night wasn't ideal training. Or maybe I shouldn't have had that penultimate glass of vino. We shall never know.

      Day 2 Hospital de Orbigo

      October 30, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Day two started without any troubles. I met two people from Netherlands so I practised my Dutch. The lady had a problem with her ankle and she could barely walk. They have been on Camino for seven weeks, me 2 days and I already feel quite beaten. The route was nice and quiet. The last stretch of La Meseta. Most of the time the route followed back country road with almost no traffic. One could see from horizon to horizon, nothing around. It reminded me of a story back in my hitchhiking days. One driver mentioned that he experienced something like that in Kazachstan. I strangely became happy when a car appeared on a horizon. I met a German peregrino. He called taxi since his ankle was also swollen and he could not walk anymore. He offered me a ride, I refused. First test? The bridge in Hospital De Orbigo is impressive, the longest on Camino, from 10th century. My albergue is just next to it. Super convenientRead more

      Ur jousting me

      April 17 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Compared to the Meseta, towns are beautifully spaced now, and I came, in time, to Hospital de Orbigo and its wonderful bridge.

I was completely in my head until I got here, and it pulled me into the moment where I stayed the rest of the day.

I was looking at the wooden stuff on the grassed side, making another Knights Tale joke to myself when I realised, later confirmed by a sign, no that is an *actual* jousting set up. Brilliant.

Camino Day 24: León to Hospital deÓrbigo

      September 4, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

      Total Distance: 41.5km
      Step Count: 58k
      Blisters to date: 2
      Tortillas to date: 21
      Injuries: shin splints

Blippin’ longest day ever walking! Not just on the Camino but in my lifetime! - to date anyways.

What was meant to be a 34km day (a bit of a stretch for my leg and the longest day I’d have so far) ended up being 41km! All the guide books and trail info about this stage were wrong as confirmed by the locals later.

The walk itself was flat, uneventful, serene, with minimal stops, a very early start and some rain during the morning. I ended up walking the whole day with a Mexican woman who’d asked me in León if she could stick with me just to make her way out of town. It would be dark and she didn’t want to get lost but we found our way out easily thanks to another pilgrim who was heading out at the same time.

Grumpiness kicked in after 30 odd KMs when I realised I still had another 8 to reach my destination but all the aches and pains disappeared in an instant when we arrived! Hospital de Órbigo was by far one of the most beautiful arrivals to a village with its long Roman bridge and the beautiful love story surrounding it (el Passo Honroso)! ❤️

We were also going to stay at an Albergue run by Venezuelans which to my surprise was all dedicated to paintings by pilgrims. It was so colourful and reminded me of posadas by the beach back home! 💛💙❤️

Lukas and I spent like an hour painting and then went to enjoy a well deserved dinner with Tim and then lots of sleep! The next day would be a short one 😊

Stage 22 - along the way

      April 26 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

Today the Camino was back to its verdant, more interesting style after days of straight and flat.

So many highlights, including the most beautiful supermodel chickens in a cafe we stopped at, the stunning Hospital de Órbigo (with its bridge that legend has it saw 300 knightly fights when one guy got turned down by a girl and decided he had to defend his honour by challenging everyone else to a fight in the 1400s!), and the most gloriously hippy food and rest stop in the middle of nowhere!Read more
