      Milladoiro

      April 29 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

An 18km uphill trek today, surprisingly perfect conditions, we removed layers as we went. From Padrón we started in brisk sunny air along a river, took a coffee break at 4km then went through back village lanes, almost alleys, but a real insight into the local ways with vines and gardens mixed in with houses and small enterprises. Achieved our 2nd daily stamp at a Marian shrine, then it was into climbing hills through various villages, forests, chooks, goats and home produce gardens. A steep final 4 km with a welcome lunch at Milladoiro. Found our very snazzy 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment just off the Caminho, which made the arduous check-in worthwhile. Now for an ale waiting for a restaurant to open at 8.30. On to Santiago tomorrow, ponchos at the ready.Read more

      Santiago de Compostela

      August 31, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Wandered around the old town today, sat in the plaza at the cathedral, attended the Pilgrims mass, visited the musuem and treated myself to a fancy lunch. I must admit I still surprised when my order comes out. Finished the day with gelato and a walk through the park. Now to pack for Switzerland 🥰💜🩷💞Read more

      Mein Abendessen

      May 20, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Read more

O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela

      May 29, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Wat sou ek anders doen: by Sarria stop.

We made it! Santiago at last!

      June 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Today was a good day for most of us. For Jon, it was a test of his grit. As I mentioned briefly, Jon’s feet and legs have not been in a great place. Today his leg and knee were really bothering him. He pretty much limped the whole 18km today. He has grit and he clenched his teeth and did it! The rest of us had to watch him walk in pain. Thankfully, we all made it! The last part of the trip is such a strange experience. I thought it would be like seeing the Emerald City from far off and we would go running to the steps of the cathedral. Actually it was a windy path through downtrodden urban neighborhoods and you couldn’t even see the steeple until you rounded the corner of a bunch of old buildings and suddenly it was there. Not what I imagined. I guess though it is a metaphor and this whole trip is a pilgrimage for self reflection. I know Martin Luther would roll his eyes at me for wanting the compestella but honestly, I think God understands our need for physical gestures to help us believe and understand the heavenly gestures. Why else would He use water and wine and bread? He knows we are weak minded and need something physical to hold onto. The pilgrimage and piece of paper in the end aren’t necessary for forgiveness and grace. But they help us get to the right place to receive forgiveness and believe that it is true.

I don’t know if it is something I’d frame in my house but I do know I will treasure it and use it to remember this awesome adventure of bonding as a family and sending off our first born into the world. The boys talked for 180km to each other- to us- And hopefully in their heads with God. I feel good about how we solved problems and worked as a team. I’m satisfied with my Camino and feel grateful for this opportunity. What an adventure!

This evening we went to mass. It was all in Spanish but we knew the order of service and could tell what was happening. They swung the botafumiero at the end which is a special treat. The cathedral was amazing. What a grand finale!

(By the way, funny that thousands of years of pilgrimage on a holy trail doesn’t trump modern necessities. The trail is clearly moved to go around an airport runway. Funny!)

      Santiago de Compostela

      April 30 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

An 8km final day, mainly up hill! We started late to avoid the drizzle and were partially successful. Our ponchos did get an outing. While short, the walk was quite hard. Final few kms through the suburbs of Santiago as we sought a glimpse of the Cathedral, then we arrived via the alley ways of the central city. Lots of fellow pilgrims arriving. Photos then off to get our official parchment of completion, a proud possession. Found our rather cosy room nearby, then a quick visit to the Cathedral to embrace the Apostle James and light some candles. A late lunch and celebratory libation. We’ll attend the Pilgrim Mass at 7.30pm.Read more

O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela

      June 4, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Well I did it! Not the Camino I had so carefully planned but the Camino that I had. I left very early this morning so that I could catch up to Sandra who was staying 7 kms ahead of me. It was not as foggy but it was very overcast so it was dark for some time, especially in the forest. I did eventually catch Sandra and I was so glad we could walk into Santiago together. It was very emotional. We also caught up with Tony and Johan - the odds of the four of us arriving there on the same day are unbelievable.

We received our Compostella and really felt we had earned it. It was a very proud moment.

We had an exceptional Menu del Dia to celebrate and then I went to the laundromat so I could at last have some clean clothes. I would love though to have some different clothes! We all met up for a drink and some snacks in the evening and it was a great end to a great day. I am staying in a lovely hotel right near the Cathedral recommended by Narelle and and looking forward to a lazy morning.
