      Logrono

      30. mai 2023, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Today I set my sights on Logrono, a bus ride from this beautiful Palacio. I go to "Winederful" hostel there for three days while I explore the museums, churches, art of the city. In the heart of wine country, there are plenty of day trips to the vineyards but I'll be doing my trip to an olive Grove.

Once arriving here at Logrono and a two km walk from the bus...and Two hours waiting for the albergue to open at 3pm so now in my sleep pod. Very clean sheets, pillow cases and towel at 30 euros a night.. logrono is a huge town, city really so after a rest I will go explore....

So, I got lost with another two hours out of my day I bought some food to prepare dinner after finally making it back. One of the other walkers had a good laugh at my bad luck so passing her on my way in she took my advice and was back at the hostel in ten minutes, still laughing at my sense of geography! She is Donna from the gold coast in Australia!

Villamayor de Monjardin and on to Sansol

      13. september 2022, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Day 10 Villamayor de Monjardin and Day 11 in Sansol - From Estella to Villamayor was a nice 11 mile walk past the Iratxe monastery, on the side of which is a popular fountain that dispenses water and/or red wine. I could only take a sip of this - too vinigery for my taste!
Villamayor is a small town and I stayed at a wonderful Albergue run by volunteers from various countries - a German, 2 Italians, 2 Dutch and 3 Americans. I stayed in a dorm with bunk beds with 2 Korean women, one Swedish girl and one Canadian man who snored all night! But the dinner was amazing! The volunteers set up tables on the terrace overlooking the Romanesque Church and distant vineyards. 21 pilgrims and 8 volunteers from about a dozen or more countries ate under a sky threatening to rain, along with the thunder and lightening! Managed to finish before the heavens opened up to pour out the much needed rain.
Soon after dinner we were invited to a meditation and prayer session. We came together in a low cavernous room set up with low sofas and cushions and dim lights. Mint tea was served. After some spiritual mumbo-jumbo and meditation we sat around and everyone recounted experiences on the Camino. It was very nice, peaceful and very, very friendly - a special Camino experience.

      Day 5 walking

      13. mai, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

We had lovely view from our dormitory window of the rising sun, we were first to arrive yesterday and so could chose our beds, and the last to leave just after 8!
Initial downward walk and then steep climb into Torres des Rio with another beautiful old church.
We then had mixture of gentle inclines and some steep climbs to Viana, where we met with a friend (Sarah) who is walking with us for a few days - so we were 2 and are now 3 which 😊
Viana is another old town with cathedral being renovated. On the way there we also passed a sort of shrine with piles of stacked stones with photos and names of presumed lost loved ones, very poignant, and a tree full of lots of different national flags. And just before one hill, in a shady spot with picnic tables, a Spanish chap was playing his guitar and serenading all the passing walkers/pilgrims, most stopped to listen for few minutes as did we. The Spanish have been very welcoming and we have passed refreshments tables where kind locals have put out fruit and snacks and drinks and just asked for a donation.
After the 3 of us left Viana, the landscape subtly changed and included more scrubland and trees, and also olive groves and vine fields, signalling we were leaving the Navarre region and crossing into La Rioja. We walked onto Logrono which is a large city and so we passed quite an industrial area on the way in and the walk was less interesting. I had booked the 3 of us a private room rather than beds in a dorm, feels like luxury! And we’ve just been out for a nice dinner and now listening to the rain!

      Day 8 - To Lograno

      7. oktober 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

Beautiful 16km hike to Logroño thru amazing verdant fields of olive trees and vineyards. We had a fantastic “pincho’s ” (tapas) in Viana. We absolutely loved Logroño and got in early enough to drop Agnus and Genevieve and explore the city. In our traditional form, we walked with no plan and explored the city, shopping , eating and drinking and ended up in the midst of a football celebration enjoying pinchos up and down the streets. We had time for a short nap, and had dinner reservations at a Michelin star restaurant called Sabores (at 9 pm) with our new Camino friends, Tanya and Bobby from CA. An amazing day all around.Les mer

    • Villatuerta to Torres del Río

      20. september 2022, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Up early to beat the heat we were on the hoof by 6:20am, which is 90 minutes before dawn. Our destination was about 25km ahead.

It was deliciously cool walking at that hour but also pitch dark. John has a headlamp so we were able to see the track into Estella. It was an easy walk, we were there in an hour and were across town by 8am, where we stopped for coffee and croissants.

Not far out of Estella is the monastery of Irache. They make wine there and offer it free to pilgrims through a tap in the wall, along with fresh water for those disinclined to drink red wine at 8:30am.

Kevin had a sip and added a few drops to his water bottle for a hoped-for medicinal effect. The wine quality was a tad below that of the $1.29 bottle featured in yesterday’s photos.

From there it was a quite gradual climb to Villamayor de Monjardín. We stopped at the cafe a bit short of there in Ázqueta for an excellent pair of boccadillos and a cold drink. Also a boots off airing of the feet which seems to be a best practice for long distance walkers.

From there it was a long hot, mostly shadeless downhill into Los Arcos, with a food truck a few km short of town where we stopped again to drink something cold and air the feet.

We had been unable to find a room in Los Arcos so we phoned for a taxi on arrival which delivered us a few km up the track at Torres del Río where we have a private twin room for the night.

      Supercute Cafe in Sansol

      9. juni 2023, Spania ⋅ ⛅ 66 °F

I wish I were hungrier... This little cafe is delightful and their pan de chocolate looks tempting..... But alas, my appetite isn't here.

There is also a bumper-crop of forks planted nearby. In case you're wondering where forks are grown.

      Sansol is small, but nice.

      Day 5 Estella - Sansol

      1. mai, Spania ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

      28.4 km (141.6 from start). 6h 10min. 2000 Calories. 34000 steps.

Latte start in Estella. Good breakfast and start at 7.30am. Rain half of the stage but pretty chill out there (7°C). Still prefer this weather instead of sun and 20+°

Pain in my knees is bad - especially in the start. If there are downhills, like today, then it is not funny. Will start tomorrow stage with pain killers as first 10km of that stage is called “knee wreckers”.

Walked alone first 18km - and passed by famous place - wine on tap. Free to pilgrims. It was 8am so I just took the picture and walked through.

Cached up with Judita at 18km mark - we were heading to same hostel and once again, she was walking slowly - just what my knees needed.

Fortunately not so many hills in last 15km so I am filling pretty good.

It is 3pm, I am writing this blog and have whole 4 hours before the dinner. Luxury if you ask me. My clothes is washed, I had nice warm shower - just need some snacks and a cold cola.

      Day 9 Sansol to Longrono

      29. september 2023, Spania ⋅ ☀️ 57 °F

We were blessed with another outstanding day of sunshine. We missed our breakfast stop but not too far up the road came to a cute little "snack shack" along the trail. There was coffee, fresh squeezed juice, fresh fruit, and pastries. We also had a missed turn that required a bit of backtracking and off trail trekking... 😆 Got to Longrono early enough to do a little exploring. Incredibly beautiful central church. It is Friday night, so the streets, shops, bars and restaurants were bustling. Great people watching from our balcony over Calle Portales.Les mer
