      Route choices

      August 17, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

In the morning, I started walking when I was ready, Thérèse from France was ready too, and we started together. Jan and Klaus were still packing.
Thérèse went up the first hill quicker than me, and at the top we were offered to stop for a free coffee. We had just have breakfast, I don't drink coffee, and I was ready to walk. But Thérèse stayed. I thought she'd catch up with me a bit later, but never did.
Jan and Klaus caught up when we were entering Villafranca del Bierzo. We walked together very little, until we got to the fork:
The standard route went along the road and river, and was flat and shorter than the alternative.
The alternative went over a mountain, and rejoined the main route at Trabadelos.
The boys were doing the easy route, and I was doing the mountain. They were going all the way to Ruitelán today (25k via the short route). Since I was going the longer and harder way, I was planning to stop earlier.

      Villafranca del Bierzo

      June 14, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 79 °F

Villafranca del Bierzo is a village and municipality located in the comarca of El Bierzo, in the province of León, Castile and León, Spain.

      Totally cool history please check

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Villafranca_del…

The Peninsular War (1807–1814) of course was the military conflict fought in the Iberian Peninsula by Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom against the invading and occupying forces of the First French Empire during the Napoleonic Wars.

Which is where one of my fave song quotes comes from
Oer the hills and oer the plains
      Through Flanders Portugal and Spain
King George commands and we obey
Oer the hills and far away...

And of course there is Bernard Caldwell's Sharpe Rifles series and PBS TV ones with young Sean Bean...

Be it that this is the end of my stage and I was waaaay too early fir my albergue check in, we took another break before I walked Leif to the other side of Plaza Major and wished him a fond Buen Camino.... he's moving on for another 10km

And not counting fideua in Burgos this is my 1st true pasta dish so far (carbonara)

Later in the evening the pilgrims and locals gather on Plaza Mayor for dinner and

Iglesia de San Francisco I probably would have climbed up but it's too late in the day and still too hot for me to do that so that's the only picture we get

      Villafranca del Bierzo

      October 9, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo

      May 19, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

23km - Lang dag in die hitte met stywe bene na gister. My voete voel goed maar hierdie week is dit my rugsak wat my skouers laat kreun.

    • Day 43–44

      Villafranca del Bierzo

      May 2 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

Life never goes as we plan. While life on the Camino is different, it’s still life. All this to say, my plans have been disrupted. The last few days I walked, I’d have 5-15 minutes a couple times of some intense low back/glute pain. I was a bit nervous about the 15 mile walk from Ponferrada to Villafranca having experienced this, but I already had reservations, and it was generally so short-lived that I figured I’d be ok. The first half of the walk was ok- low energy, but no pain. I was finally getting into it when the stabbing pain started back up. Fortunately I was entering a town, so I figured a little coffee break and I’d be good to go. Wrong. It was still there when I got up to keep walking, but I figured it would just take some time. I walked past a posting for a taxi, thought “I should take a photo just in case” and then forgot to do so 🤦‍♀️ The next 8+ miles were brutal. It’s been a long time since I’ve had to dig that deep to push through. Little by little, I made it to the best hostel I’ve been in. The hospitalero is wonderful. I hoped to find a physiotherapist here who could help me, but alas, there isn’t one. So today I’m catching a bus to Sarria, where the last 100km of the Camino starts. My current plan is to stay there for 3 nights before walking again, but I’m trying to not make too many plans at this point. I’m bummed about it, but hopeful that I’ll be back on the Camino in a few days.Read more

Villafranca del Bierzo - beautiful town

      May 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

First, thank you for so many birthday greetings when I woke up this morning!! So happy, and a great way to start the day.

And today was again lovely…this is getting very repetitive, but this area is so beautiful. It is still quite cool in the mornings - about 6° again, so Amr left at 8.40, but didn’t even take extra fleece as it rapidly warms up, specially if you’re walking, and in the afternoons it is a very comfortable mid 20s. This was one walk I am very envious of, as it goes through and looking down at the vineyards of the Bierzo valley, and is where we saw them grape picking both times in October. By now the vines are green and well and truly sprouting with leaves, a contrast to the withered stalks we saw in the early days of this camino. Amr walked 25 kms, quite a long day, but no drastic ups and downs, arrived here at a bit after 3, but fairly knackered!

I had my exercise walking to the bus station in Ponferrada, and got the 11.40 bus…all a bit vague at the bus station, no board with departures etc, but managed to find which bay it left from, and we finally pulled out at 12… just a half hour ride to Villafranca, and as we went through Cacabelos I could see we were extremely close to where Amr had stopped for some food (a paella, just freshly made). Was tempted to get out and walk the rest of the way with him, but behaved and didn’t!! Anyway, was dropped here in the one bus stop, but had no real idea where I was…it is a small town and soon sorted it out, and sat in the main square where our hotel is, and had a beer and a coffee, both with complimentary tapas, as the hotel check in time was 2pm. Very relaxing.

Checked in at 2, and this is a charming place - we have not stayed here before. Quite a spacious room, and of course, spotless. Had time to unpack the bits I needed and settle in before setting out again to explore and meet Amr. Found the Tabac shop which the helpful woman at reception told me would sell tickets and know about to tomorrow’s destination, Ambasmestas, a tiny village, about 15 kms walk from here. He was shut, siesta time, so walked on and walked back along the camino and before long Amr turned up! He wanted a drink before showering etc, so we sat in the plaza again and caught up over a beer and a tonic (this is often my drink at the moment!). Now he is clean and watching fluff on his iPad and I have had a couple of further exploratory excursions…found the Tabac man open who said no buses to Ambasmestas tomorrow, but at the tourist information the helpful woman said yes, there is one at 1.30 and told me where its bus stop is - a small bus company that my friend, Luís, the taxi driver, had mentioned. So am going to try for that tomorrow- another adventure! If all fails I can get a taxi.

So that’s where we stand now…there are no special places to eat that I could find for my birthday dinner…but all have the usual good stuff, and it will be fun. I did try and see if they were open at where we used to stay, as their dinners were very good, but they were all shuttered down sadly - maybe covid?? …or just closed… Forgot to mention that last night in Ponferrada we did have a special dinner at the hotel’s good restaurant…we started off with a complimentary croquetta each, then shared a dish of delicious grilled vegetables, and then Amr had a local specialty of a soupy dish with blood sausage, chorizo and pork cheek, which was delicious, but I had my favourite chiperones a la plancha with a black garlic mayo to dip them in…absolutely yum. So that was the gala dinner! But it will be fun tonight - it always is.

Now back from dinner and will add a quick addendum. Ate at one of the restaurants in the plaza, and not gourmet, but very good. A €14 3 course dinner…I started with pumpkin and zucchini soup, Amr a bean, chickpea, ham and prawn mix, and for main Amr had fish and I had chicken drumsticks in a yum sauce and way too many French fries. All good, and will add photos of the many aspects of the day.

Day 19- to Vega de Valcarce

      October 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Left Villafranca after a wonderful hotel breakfast, one of the best we have had on the trail to date. Once again, we got a late start.

We had planned to take the scenic route out of town, but we missed the turn. However we had a beautiful walk following the river, dodging a few cars on the road.

It rained, sun came out, rained again…sun. All day. We walked into a village within 1km of where we had planned to stay and caught a cafe that was not on siesta, with one table outside in the sun, and we enjoined a delightful lunch. Our Camino friend Carol from UK, joined us for a snack before she went on her way.

We walked in sunshine up to our town of Vega de Valcarce and to our lovely rooms with an adjoining balcony overlooking the river. We had time to hang our clothes, make a run for supplies and enjoyed our end of day cerveza at our hacienda at a table down by the river.

While we were enjoying a fiesty game of uno, an older couple who lived across the river, offered us some fruit from their trees down by the river. They didn’t speak English, but motioned to us to cross the river to meet them where they shared some of their fruits. We had no idea what fruits they were, but Joan jumped right into a plum/fig looking fruit and took a bite. They were pleased.

We were advised that a restaurant in our little town had outstanding paella. We made our way there for dinner and enjoyed a lovely dinner of paella marisco (seafood) and Sangria.

After dinner Joan and I picked up our game of Uno and soon a French couple pulled their chairs over to join us. They spoke fluent Uno, but not much English. It was a wonderful Camino experience. We also met Julie from Taiwan. All in all a great day. We walked around 18km/11 miles.

We are getting closer to Santiago.

      Buen Camino!

    • Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo

      September 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 66 °F

We took our time walking to Villafranca and it was cold and then sunny, but beautiful. Our route eventually took us through vineyards and the harvest was in process. I think we like walking through this kind of country best because of the rolling hills.Read more
