Day 7 Puenta la Raina to Villatuerta

      May 13 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F

We stayed at the cutest allbergue last night and felt so rested that we pushed on to Villatuerta today. Lots of climbing, hiked with ladies from Tazmania all morning. Our albergue tonight, Albergue Magica, has fabulous paella, local vegetables, wine, and is full of people hiking the Camino. Here are some pics!Read more

      Lorca to Estella

      May 31 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 52 °F

On the way to Estella today we stopped at an 11th Century Monastery. Then when we arrived in Estella we saw three more amazing 11th century churches. It always amazes me to walk in these churches and see such grandeur. The Monastery was San Miguel, then San Andres, San Juan Baptista and ruins of St Peter
      And the Holy Sepulcher (ruins)
We also saw a scary clown fountain and there are snails everywhere. We finished the day with Paella. This is in two parts too many pictures

      Estella

      May 28 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Another very hot day walking up a steep hill, and then through ondulating coun tryside to this lovely medieval town.
I have managed to hurt my quad on right leg, so fell far behind making it a long painful day. The hostel has ice packs amd we met a nurse and an athletics trainer so loads of advice on what to do. Got good pain killers, but am going to rest tomorrow. There is plenty to do here.
The good thing about walking slowly is I noticed lots of things and too some nice pictures.

Day 10. From Lorca to Azqueta

      May 25 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 59 °F

Much shorter day. 5.85 miles. We had to make a stop at Urgent care for Steve’s blisters. They were so helpful and kind to each of us. We made a pharmacy run to get what we needed. Had a second breakfast but not exactly what I was hoping for. Went to check into our albergue but it was the wrong town….so we kept on walking. Shower done , hair is done and the owner of the albergue made us the best tuna fish sandwich!!!
Walked with Petra from Sweden today. Having knee issues…helped her by giving her my hiking poles. We have ended up in the same as for the night! Also 2 from Germany that we met two nights ago is here as well. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. We feel them and appreciate them. Feeling grateful for the care Steve received today, grateful for the short day and for the best tuna fish sandwich ever!!!

      Chan chan

      June 7 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Om 7 uur was de albuergue leeg. In alle rust opstarten ri Logrono. Een tour om Pamplona uit te komen. Veel stoplichten. Na 9.00 uur on the road, gevolgd door een jong Suid Afrkaans stel. Jij spreekt ook Nederlands? Ja suiker- bossie! Tegen 10 uur, uurtje meege-wandeld. Puenta da Reina is schitterend...doorge wandeld. 2 kerken: San Pedro (helaas dicht) e San Tiago ff stempelen. Read more

      Despacito

      June 8 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Vlg mr. Google is Compostela nog maar 643 km verdeeld over 14 dagen? Despacito dusss. Even markt rond, met veel traditionele kledij. Dit viel echter in het water. Wordt komende uren veel regen verwacht. Eerst maar even de kroeg in, potje voetbal erbij. Het kan nie op, gezellig. Goede zondag allemaal met wat zon :)

      Estella to Los Arcos

      September 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

This may be a short blog as the internet here is very dodgy and I am feeling very tired. Another blue bird day which is another way of saying a very hot day!
Our first stop along the way was a fountain that provides free red wine for all the pilgrims. Although it was 8 am we had to try it out. Maybe not what you would order for the table but ok and of course free!
Then we had a great walk through Holly oak tree forests, almond trees and wineries. Along the way we were eating almonds, beautiful sweet grapes and blackberries which were not quite up to the standard of Hatepe but pretty good.
We stopped in yet another pretty village for cafe con leche and then onwards we trekked! It was a long last 8km with no shade from the relentless Spanish sun and no cafes to stop at.
Eventually after long and winding roads we reached Los Arcos which is very small with a beautiful Church ( of course) . We staying in a plain hotel with dodgy wifi and a bossy receptionist but that is the Spanish way.
We met up again with our gorgeous piligrinnos from Wexford. 2 friends who are dairy farmers from Wexford farming 80 cows. One of them David and his wife caught the bus today instead of walking and Lee quipped back to them"that is why the Irish won't win the World cup." But they are good craic.
We are now back from dinner with again a very bossy waitress but at least she could have a laugh. Tomorrow is a 28 km walk..hope it's not as hot!

      On the Old Camino

      September 28, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Our Albegue host Jordi encouraged us to walk the Old Camino, through the hills above the valley. The route changed in the 1200,'s, when the Monastery on the hill complained to the King of Navette, too many Pilgrims we're walking to Santiago. The route was changed to the valley.

This morning we hiked through the hills, past a boat load of sheep and great views.

We took a short detour, half mile, Down to the valley route, tho visit the Irache Wine Fountain.

It is 5 O'clock some where!

Back up to the Old Camino, then on to our next stop. A short day today, only about 12 km I think, with the detour.

      Estella

      September 25, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today was not an especially tough day but it did get hot and the last few kilometers I trudged along pretty slowly. One of the photos is of a tunnel under a highway that gave welcome shade for a rest stop.
Celebrated finding beds in the municipal albergue, which has a much quieter vibe than the last couple did.
I was super pleased with myself when I used my phone to navigate to a grocery and ATM, and then found my way back without my phone. Whoo hoo! Visited a gorgeous church and cloister, which purports to house a relic of St. Andrew. The really ornate photo is of where it’s housed.
Get to sleep on a lower bunk tonight, such a treat!

      Villatuerta

      September 13, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Today turned out to be a 'people day' with only 11 miles of hiking but lots of social time. The walk took us through wonderful narrow street villages with fun stops to visit with old Camino friends and meet new ones.

We stopped 1.5 early for the stage in Villatuerta at a wonderful albergue with regular beds (no bunks)!! It really has turned out to be a retreat after many miles on our bodies. We spent the afternoon doing laundry with a washer/dryer rather than in a bucket, were provided tubs of warm water, Epsom Salts and vinegar to soak our feet (amazing), showered in showers without flow restrictions (like in the states), drank $5 bottles of wine and just chilled. Looking forward to paella for dinner tonight! This albergue, Casa Magica, is for sale. Hummmmm....
