      Hängebrücke Hohstalden

      A quiet day today. Both of us have got quite stiff legs.

      We borrowed a couple of the free campsite bikes this morning and popped down to the local Coop to buy something for lunch and dinner.

      After lunch we caught the bus a couple of miles up the valley to cross (and the re-cross) the Hostalde Suspension Bridge, a 155m long and 37m high footbridge across the Engstlige river. We then walked back along the river.

      The bridge is quite bouncy!

      Big storm this evening but it cleared up quite quickly. Weather is turning though. ☹️. Moving on to France tomorrow.      Read more

      Day 50

      Frutigen

      June 17 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      We’re at Camping Grassi in Frutigen. Lovely little campsite with glorious views and walking distance from Frutigen town centre, currently having a beer at the outside bar opposite the Hotel Simplon. Surrounded by mountains.

      Paying the local tourist tax gives us free access on public transport (including cable cars/chair lifts) so just trying to work out how to use it tomorrow. Think we’ll stay here at least two nights.

      I know I said that yesterday’s drive was amazing but I think today’s might have been even better…. certainly more unusual.

      We tend to follow Google maps (which I have to say, has been a bit hit and miss, especially in Italy). Anyway, we stopped for a short walk this morning, and when we got back in the van, Google said it was altering the route because of a road closure.

      We followed the new route around multiple hairpins up into the mountains and then took a sharp left onto what we thought was a toll road. The toll was 27 Swiss Franks which is much more than we have been paying but there wasn’t much else we could do so we paid it. Then we followed the car in front, thinking we’d be driving thru a tunnel, but ended up driving onto a train - literally onto a train! Weird. Then we had to sit for about 10 or 15 minutes as the train took us thru a completely dark tunnel - probably about the distance from Chippenham to Bath Spa. Turns out we were on the Lötschberg Car Train. Amazing.      Read more

      In Thun geht es los

      Ich wollte nochmal hoch hinaus dieses Jahr. Das nächst gelegene von München aus sind die Schweizer Alpen.

      Es ging ganz früh los, mit dem Zug bis Zürich und nach einem Umstieg weiter bis Thun. Der Thuner See ist gleich schon beeindruckend! Nach 10 km Landstraße war ich die restlichen 30 km auf einen super schönen Radweg.

      Es fängt vielversprechend an!

      Ich befürchte ja nach wie vor, dass das Essen etc extrem teuer wird. Aber die Franken sind als Scheine einfach schön, oder? 😀      Read more

      Day 51

      Niesen

      June 18 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

      What a great day. We used our free train tickets to get to Mülenen, then caught the Niesenbahn funicular railway up to the top of Niesen, at 2362m.

      The funicular runs for 3.5km and has a maximum gradient of 68% which feels incredibly steep. It gets to a height of 2336m so we had to walk the last bit to the top of the mountain. There is a restaurant up there but it was very busy and we had already bought sandwiches.

      The views of the Alps from the top are amazing, especially on a completely clear day like today.

      There was some snow on the slopes below the peak but not very much. The paths are well maintained and well signed.

      The walk down was 7.5 miles and took us about 4 and a quarter hours - the sign at the top said 4 hours but we had lunch on the way! The drop was about 5250ft. Our legs were just about knackered by the time we got to the bottom, i.e. to a bar in Frutigen. We definitely needed a beer… but we decided to stay for schnitzel and fries instead of cooking back at the van. Weirdly, the schnitzel came with sprouts, carrots and braised red cabbage (in addition to the fries) which seemed a bit odd but was very nice nonetheless.

      Think we might have a slightly more relaxed day tomorrow.

      [Btw… the service stairs for the Niesenbahn funicular are listed by Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest stairway, with 11,674 steps and a height of 1,669 m (5,476 ft). The stairs are usually employee-only, but there is a public run called "Niesenlauf" once a year. Run!! Can you imagine??!!]      Read more

      Krattigen und Faulensee

      Toast mit Avocado und pochierten Eiern im Café Velo in Interlaken geben uns Kraft für die heutige Tour nach Spiez. Die Mädels kaufen sich noch Wandersocken und dann nehmen wir für eine Haltestelle den Bus nach Därligen. Hier starten wir immer bergauf und haben immer wieder wunderschöne Blicke auf den Thuner See, die Berge und auch den Brienzer See hinter Interlaken. Auch heute ist wieder eine der wackeligen Hängebrücken dabei :)Read more

      The road

      Today I am taking it relatively easy. I think I built a nice route with nice and quiet roads. A lot of up and down though and I discovered the following: the smaller the road, the steeper the climb.

      Downhill thrills, finishing uphil

      Coming down from Grosse Scheidegg into Grindelwald was nice and fast. Grindelwald is a tourist mekka I was glad to get through quickly. The last time I was there must have been at least 15 years ago and it was cute then. Now not so much. I skipped the traffic jam out of town weaving between traffic like an Italian. Got a few horn sounds. I guess for encouragement.

      I had found a camping in Interlaken, but once there I didn’t fancy it. Drove on to one uphill from the Thunsee a bit, but it was full. Uphill a bit more and found one.

      Day 10

      Die schöne Schweiz

      Am Dienstag fahren wir weg vom Genfersee zum Thunersee. Wir haben einen 5-Sterne Campingplatz rausgesucht und im Vorhinein angefragt. Man hat uns gesagt, wir müssen am Vormittag hinkommen damit noch Platz ist. Deshalb stehen wir am Dienstag in aller Früh (um 7 Uhr) auf und packen alles zusammen. Um 8:45 fahren wir los und nach nur 2 Stunden Fahrt kommen wir beim Campingplatz Manor Farm an. Sie haben tatsächlich noch einen Platz für uns! Den Rest des Tages verbringen wir mit SUP fahren und das blaue Wasser ansehen.

      Am Mittwoch fahren wir nach Adelboden. Mit der Seilbahn fahren wir auf die Tschentenalp zur Giant Swing, eine 5 Meter hohe Schaukel      Read more

      Genf

      Nach 5 Stunden Fahrt kommen wir in der schönen Schweiz an. Unser Stellplatz liegt in Seenähe und das Wetter ist angenehm. Am Montag verschlägt es uns nach Genf, da Joel hier in jungen Jahren gegärtnert hat. Also fahren wir mitten durch die Staatsgebäude hindurch und vor allem Lorena staunt, wie viele der internationalen Organisationen hier ihren Sitz haben. Danach gehen wir durch einen botanischen Garten spazieren und erfreuen uns an der Natur. Danach sind alle müde und hungrig und was könnte da besser helfen als McDonalds. Gesagt, getan. Für uns ist es hier wie in einer anderen Welt, als wir an Gucci, Prada oder Rolex Geschäften vorbeilaufen und uns überall Anzugträger entgegenkommen. Lorena freut sich noch über die gut gekleideten Damen, sehr "ästhetisch", wie sie findet. Natürlich darf eine Postkarte aus der Schweiz nicht fehlen. Die finden wir in dem christlichen Bücherladen, der unter anderem Bibeln für die Gideons produziert. Fazit zu Genf: Sehr schön. Lorena kommt wieder.
      Der restliche Tag vergeht entspannt am See.      Read more

      Interlaken

      August 28 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

      Korte post vandaag: de tocht was lang, veel stoplichten met brandende zon en een zwart leren pak. Vanochtend was wel echt geweldig in de Vogezen. Dat is de eerste foto. Maar later op de dag was minder. Allerlaatste stukje was super gaaf langs een mooi meer. Nu op een drukke overvolle en heel dure camping met een plekje langs een drukke weg, maaaaar; mooi uitzicht en een douche die heel hard en heet kan en dan wel weer gratis is en toch ook best gezellig. Ik ga lekker vroeg naar bed.
